Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

Seems to me that all of the people saying it is 'weird' must be socially programmed types, lacking in free open minded thinking. Dare I say, loosen up 'sheeple'.

That will be my eldest in a few years 🤣

AnnieSnap · 17/11/2022 23:23

I definitely wouldn’t’ t be put off by that alone. I’m guessing you wouldn’t have been put off by him ordering alcohol. Yet it causes more problems than anything else in society. The Guy fancied a glass of milk and was just being his ‘authentic self’, rather than putting on a front!

NoClueWhatsover · 17/11/2022 23:26

I would first worry he might be feeling nervous and have an upset stomach. Then would be thinking that he didn't want to drink (responsible) and didn't like soft drinks. It isn't odd by all means, but it is interesting!

not sure he is, but I am and I also think it's a bit unusual.. Not sure what being dutch have to do with this...

Haha proost! 🥛 What on earth have we done to make the British think we drink milk in restaurants...

AssumingDirectControl · 17/11/2022 23:27

Did you date this man?

Agapornis · 17/11/2022 23:29

@Lyver p.s. that said, I am having a lovely hot mug of anijsmelk right now

fruktsoda · 17/11/2022 23:39

I'm not a big milk drinker, but DH is. I might think it was a bit unusual to order milk, but it's just something to drink. Nothing wrong with it, and I'd rather date a milk-drinker than someone who can't get through an evening without alcohol.

geraniumsandsunshine · 16/11/2022 11:06

Bubbly milk

😂😂

TomRaider · 17/11/2022 23:41

I'm a big milk drinker but then when I was growing up milk was free.

In summer I'll regularly buy a litre of milk as opposed to coke or pop.

It's usually cheaper and definitely better for you.

It's quite popular for its isotonic and protein levels and of course more natural than sports drinks or powders for those so inclined.

I'm not sure I'd order it with a meal... Unless it was a full English.

Would I be turned off.... Probably not, more intrigued, but then I like the odd ones.

I might order it at the forthcoming Christmas do and see what folks say!

Buggersticks · 17/11/2022 23:41

@geraniumsandsunshine
🤣 if you know, you know

Daffi · 17/11/2022 23:50

Milk is a great recovery drink for sports people. It's milk, get over it.

Mossley · 17/11/2022 23:50

That made me laugh, milky milky :-)

AmberMcAmber · 17/11/2022 23:58

Maybe he had heartburn or something? Or maybe he just doesn’t live by societal norms and does what makes him feel good… I have glasses of milk at times and wouldn’t think twice about having it in a bad if I’d seen it (for White Russians or normal tea/coffee)… I wouldnt trust it where they don’t often serve fresh milk though… can’t have lumpy milk can we??? Lol

I once went on a date with a guy I'd met the week before, at a party. It was a beautiful, summer evening, and I managed to find a nice table outside the bar, with a lovely view. He was a bit late, but I got a glass of wine and enjoyed the ambience. I assumed that when he got there we'd have a laugh, get mildly pissed, and get to know each other a bit more.
When he finally turned up he ordered a pot of tea. I finished my wine and went home.

So because he didn't want to get drunk? God forbid someone wants to get to know yo u whilst they're sober 🙄

SleepingStandingUp · 18/11/2022 00:06

SkylightSkylight · 17/11/2022 23:09

There aren't only two choices.

a grown man ordering milk, on a date, in a restaurant IS weird. I want to date a man, not a child.

Given the number of people who've said this wouldn't raise an eyebrow in Ireland or Netherlands, so you think all Irish and Dutch men are immature weirdos too?

EatsYummySprouts · 18/11/2022 00:06

The Norwegians are big milk drinkers…Nordic background?
Or one guy I used to work with always drank a large glass of milk before drinks after work, to line his stomache 😂

SleepingStandingUp · 18/11/2022 00:11

I bet the Vikings dranks milk before a big feast or going into battle!

whatever floats your boat.

Dh doesn't drink (his dad drank enough for both of them). Every date we have ever had he has been sober (and often orders tea or coffee). I love a glass of wine myself.

KillerSandy · 18/11/2022 00:48

I had a relationship with a guy who loved milk and he said it made him lick like a cat ! PS He did 😂

Whenwillitwork · 18/11/2022 01:11

This reminded me that my Dutch colleagues used to always have milk with their lunch. I found it quite endearing!

Canthave2manycats · 18/11/2022 01:20

Over-reaction I think!

My 19 year old DS drinks a lot of milk because he likes it! He’s never ordered it in a restaurant. I think you should give the poor bugger a chance if this was your only reservation. You might end up laughing about it in times to come!

EdinaMonsoon · 18/11/2022 01:33

It would turn me off too OP. And honestly what’s with all the “normal for the Dutch” references? Married to a Dutchman for 23 years. Never once have I witnessed him, our Dutch family or friends order milk with a meal! It sounds about as plausible as everyone in England starting the day with a “full English” 😆

YABVU, people like milk. End of. Get over it or move on.
