To not find my wealthy retired dad's " joke" funny?

malificent7 · 14/11/2022 22:51

I work nhs shifts. I am really chuffed not to be working over Christmas but when I told my dad he replied " neither are we!" He hasn't worked for 10 years. I wouldn't mind so much if I wasn't struggling with the cost of living etc.

OP posts:

Good God OP, is he allowed to joke about anything?

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/11/2022 23:49

It's irritating but presumably he worked for 40 years.

Just tell him straight you are really pissed off you are working all of Christmas so can he direct the Dad jokes elsewhere

She's not working at Christmas, that's the whole point of the OP.

apalershadeoflight · 14/11/2022 23:52

It's a pretty crap joke though, isn't it?
Especially if he's been retired for some time. What's actually funny about it?

Was it a joke, op? I mean, did he laugh at it himself or look at you expectantly with a grin and twinkle in his eyes? Does he often tell unfunny jokes? If so, yes, you are probably being unreasonable and should just humour him.

Unless he has form for making insensitive digs at you?

Dillydollydingdong · 14/11/2022 23:56

He's done his bit, probably over 40 years. Stop moaning

TeapotTitties · 14/11/2022 23:57

The OP does sound a bit oversensitive to be fair.

And why mention 'NHS' shifts instead of just shifts?

Your dad didn't choose your job for you did he? And I'm assuming it's not his fault you're struggling with the cost of living?

Even the fact you mentioned he's 'wealthy' sounds like you think you're entitled to a slice of his pension.

Vaccine001 · 14/11/2022 23:57

Some people never get a day off. Carers for example.

SalmonOnTheRock · 14/11/2022 23:59

In the nicest possible way...

Grow up.

I retired at 56 due to ill health now 58, Dh retired at 66 last July, whilst DS is waiting to pass his test he gets up and takes DS to the station and then comes home and gets back into bed and snoozes until well gone 10.00. Me ? I just stay in bed and sleep, DS calls one or the other of us every so often and say morning, just to let you know the normal people have been at work for an hour or more.... Grin To which the reply is bugger off...

When I asked him if it genuinely bothered him, that we sleep in, he replied you have both been working since your twenties, you have earned your sleep and your savings and investments. (just don't spend all of it...)

Perhaps you would like to borrow some of his maturity ?🙄

Namenic · 15/11/2022 00:04

OP - sympathies. I found it v hard to work in the nhs. Fwiw - I switched career and found it a lot easier and better quality of life

AnyFucker · 15/11/2022 00:07

I get it. Some people are just crap at reading the room.

Like those folk during Covid lockdowns being paid to stay at home and sunbathe/drink Prosecco while I ruined my physical and mental health redeployed to Covid ICU. I had to turn off my social media before I said something I might regret.

Or those smug retirees I know who said “It almost makes me wish I still had to work again” on the news of an extra bank holiday for King Charles coronation. And those same ones who plaster their FB with “live life to the full every day, just make sure it includes champagne” bollocks when they will have friends on their who don’t know where the next ha’pence is coming from

It stings, sometimes

Ponderingwindow · 15/11/2022 00:12

I think that might be joke #1 in the retired dad handbook

Floomobal · 15/11/2022 00:15

malificent7 · 14/11/2022 22:56

Back story is that he's always banging on about not having to work.

He’s worked enough to be able to retire. Get over yourself.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 15/11/2022 00:19

Stop being over sensitive. He's presumably worked up until his retirement? He's entitled to be happy that he doesn't have to get up and go to work anymore.
Unless there's a massive drip feed? If there is yabu for just giving half a story.

How is it your dad's fault that you work nhs shifts? Grow up and stop blaming him for your life choices.
If you don't like him, stop contact with him, but don't resent him because he's retired and you still have to work

malificent7 · 14/11/2022 22:57

There is more but it's outing .

YABU to start a thread and not tell us what the real issue is. It's clearly deeper than his daft joke.

FarFromTheStart · 15/11/2022 00:35

malificent7 · 14/11/2022 22:56

Back story is that he's always banging on about not having to work.

Which is fair enough, really. After a lifetime working it must feel nice to be retired. You’ll be there one day too, and can make the same joke with your children.

GirlOfTudor · 15/11/2022 00:44

I clicked this thread thinking there'd be some extremely offensive joke. Nope. He's just laughing because he's retired. Live a little.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 15/11/2022 00:52

We’ll since he’s not working I imagine he doesn’t have an opportunity to get new joke material 😉

yes OP, you are being ridiculous, just move on and enjoy your Christmas off. It’s not a competition and one day you too will be spouting off to your kids that you don’t have to work anymore. (I mean really isn’t that what we are all aiming for?)

FarFromTheStart · 15/11/2022 00:55

Why did you feel the need to mention that he’s wealthy?

fallfallfall · 15/11/2022 00:55

I love @malificent7 posts, always about money and hating those who have access to it.
oh and not coming back to a thread...

LolaSmiles · 15/11/2022 01:03

Aren't bad jokes about not having to go to work a fairly common feature of retired relatives?

Either OP is uptight or the real issue isn't a groan-worthy dad joke

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/11/2022 01:10

DuplicateUserName · 14/11/2022 23:52

Oh - haha - total misread..

But in that case OP.. I don't see what the problem is at all??

kingtamponthefurred · 15/11/2022 01:12

It's not a very funny joke, but if you allow yourself to be jealous of anyone who is retired, you have a long road of bitterness ahead of you.

ilovesooty · 15/11/2022 01:18

It's not exactly a side splitting joke but unless he's unkind to you in general I think I'd shrug it off.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 15/11/2022 01:21

I work bloody hard now. You'd better believe if I am ever lucky enough to retire I will be making stupid mum jokes about it to annoy my offspring!
