Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

I mean lights that coloured blue.

Cool white lights have their place - I was eyeing up a snowflake curtain light and the warm white looked wrong next to the bright white version.

barskits · 15/11/2022 15:12

Don't like bright blue lights, especially not flashing outdoor ones that look like emergency vehicles from a distance.

Not keen on the Scandi look or the red/white/gingerbread men type decorations, nor the wishy-washy pale pink and ice blue ones.

I'm also totally underwhelmed by the total weirdness that seems to have overtaken baubles. Rhinos, dinos, wellies, bottles of gin, doughnuts, beehives and God knows what else that has nothing whatever to do with Christmas. The price of them is especially off-putting. I'm particularly looking at you, John Lewis

Zingy123 · 15/11/2022 15:13

Door bows - a postie's nightmare

AnaJeff · 15/11/2022 15:15

Nativity scenes or anything religious!

those tacky 80s foil decorations which hang from the ceiling!

Dotjones · 15/11/2022 15:17

Flashing lights.

White lights on trees - should be mix of colours.

Fake trees that aren't green.

Jesus in manger scenes in houses where people have no religious inclination.

People who have really bright flashing outdoor decorations on late at night/overnight, the sort of decorations that they can't see themselves but are a pain in the arse for neighbours trying to sleep.

Fake snow.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 15/11/2022 15:53

Most of it tbh. Blush

It's just a lot of extra work, moving stuff round to put up a stupid little tree, we have no space at the best of times. DS has made a lovely paper chain, I'd be happy with that!

So glad I never bothered with the Elf on the Shelf shite, who needs it?!

mamabear715 · 15/11/2022 11:13

The damn tinsel that youngest DS (ND) winds along the curtain pole EVERY DAMN YEAR. Yes dear, it looks nice.. but I can't close the bloody curtains..

(Sorry for Caps, realising just HOW much it annoys me..) ;-)

Then show him how to twirl it through the rings instead so it bunches when the curtains are open and twirls when they are closed.

swirlypinky · 15/11/2022 16:18

Gonks
Nutcrackers
Light boxes shaped like presents
Little planes flying round the tree
Ditto trains
Plastic trees

My mum once bought teal baubles to match her cushions . Tacky

Trees that only have one colour dec

Anything over stated like outdoor inflatables

sueelleker · 15/11/2022 17:33

@ganachee. The blue lights that look like an emergency vehicle has just arrived!

Jesus Christ what the fuck is that?!?

Hell if I know. The weird thing is my mum is generally a cheery sort. Once I started giving her shit for putting them out I think she finally saw them for the horror they were. It then became a family joke when I started adding the fat jolly ones to the mix. I’d arrange them all in battle formation with ‘my side’ winning. I think she even sent me one in a Christmas package after I’d moved out. Sadly it broke in transit 😉

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/11/2022 21:11

Big Inflatable outdoor decorations.

Also people who can't use their decorations correctly. Our neighbours bought a big outdoor plastic light up tree thing but left it on the first setting going through a weird cycle including seizure inducing style flashing lights. I don't think he realises he can change it but it was so fucking annoying last year seeing that out the corner of my eye sitting in the living room watching TV or chatting to family.

Oh I actually LOVE those foil decs. Me and DH bought some a few years ago and the whole house feels so christmassy with them up. Hehe

BedTaker · 15/11/2022 21:13

Gonks everywhere.

Too many ornaments, especially the little mechnical festive scenes that move.

Huge Father Christmas in the corner of the room.

Basically too much Xmas tat all over the living room.

Projectors on the outside of the house, or ridiculously over decorated exteriors.

I also dislike colour scheme decorated trees - I prefer a mish mash of things collected over the years.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 15/11/2022 21:49

I unrepentantly love mono-coloured Christmas tree decorations. I've had them ever since I bought my first home, and have precious decorations from my old home tree and the ones I started collecting at the time. I have three: gold, red and yes, apparently the worst cardinal sin, BLUE!, and I love them all! All baubles lovingly collected over many years, some now quite old, and DC gets an inscribed bauble every year and has one dating back to their very first Christmas.

No blue lights though, and always warm white on the trees and outdoors. Coloured lights strung up around the house, a wreath and some greenery are my only other decorations.

LisaJool · 15/11/2022 22:20

I hate anything 'tasteful' or coordinated. Our neighbours growing up had the tackiest, most garish foil decorations which were huge hanging from a every available ceiling space and their tree was covered in the cheapest ornaments. It was a complete sensory overload but in comparison to our Laura Ashley coordinated (fake, white!) tree and matching fabric farmlands it was absolute heaven. They were quite poor and the dc only got underwear and very token presents, whilst we got loads, but it always felt that they knew what Christmas was all about. Feeling very nostalgic now 😢.

LisaJool · 15/11/2022 22:22

*garlands, Laura Ashley do not sell agriculture AFAIK.

Puddywoodycat · 15/11/2022 22:22

Blue flashing lights because of the connotations.

But absolute adore tinsel!

KimberleyClark · 15/11/2022 22:24

I remember one year, about 20 years ago I bought a set of pink, turquoise and silver baubles for my tree. Don’t know what came over me. They were ghastly.

Puddywoodycat · 15/11/2022 22:26

Lisa jool very true.

DM made our house look like alladins cave, we certainly were not classic poor but present light but it was that foil hanging from ceiling and transformation of house that made it exciting and different.

I try to make our house look different because it's small.

Puddywoodycat · 15/11/2022 22:28

In fact unfurling one of those foil ceiling decs is Christmas to me

NCFT0922 · 15/11/2022 22:29

Tinsel. Absolutely hate the stuff.
Those large flowers people pin on trees.
Coloured tree lights
coloured outdoor lights
Outdoor inflatables

NCFT0922 · 15/11/2022 22:30

Oh and gonks. What in the actual fuck are gonks?

Puddywoodycat · 15/11/2022 22:31

I've also been yearning for those Noma classic old tree lights in colours. Basically whole house looking like the interior of a box of quality stret.

When I was a kid we had a set of tree lights that looked like little Victorian lanterns. I’d love to have a set like those again.
