What Christmas decor do you hate?

Following on from a thread about interior design hates, I thought I'd do a festive version.
I'll start

I do not like:

Pop up trees

Blue lights - flashing or not

Inflatables

Rope light figures

Fibre optics

Projectors on houses.

What are yours?

I love it all! Christmas is my very favourite time of the year. We personally go for an eclectic mix of random decorations collected over the years. I have a projector out the front which shines tiny little red and green lights all over. I have a sausage dog wearing antlers for outside too and a couple of reindeer. Across the road to inflatables which DS loves. Some people up the road do those lovely perfectly matched trees which look like something out of a magazine. We often walk about in the evening looking at the decorations. I personally don't ever want an elf on the shelf but that's because I would be terrible at remembering what to do with it and ruin the fun.

kingtamponthefurred · 15/11/2022 01:08

All of it, but especially anything that flashes.

I love blue Christmas lights even though I don’t like harsh cold lights. I think it’s because in grammar school we made Christmas trees out of laundry detergent and something else (no idea what, made it solid in shape of a 3D tree with branches) and I made mind with laundry detergent that was blue with blue flecks. Very fond memories.

Also love twinkling lights if they gently twinkle at a nice slow pace.. For many years now you can only find very aggressive and fast blinking lights.

what I don’t like:
fake Christmas trees. Fake greenery. I like real trees. My dh prefers fake.
maniacally blinking lights
white lights (boring and trying to look sophisticated 😄)
too much Christmas decor, doesn’t look good
buffalo plaid
decorations that look like junk

Snipples · 15/11/2022 01:40

I really don't like people putting crackers on their tree. Seen it a few times and it's hideous.

Also giant bearded Santa's as decorations.

Not being able to see any branches on the tree - when they're too covered it's horrible.

Those annoying musical snow globes filled with polystyrene balls. They're so expensive too. Really annoying noise.

Jeds55 · 15/11/2022 01:43

Giant bows on front doors. Only started noticing them a few years ago but by far the worse for me. Don't they just get sodden? Could say the same for wreaths but I like those

pompomdaisy · 15/11/2022 01:47

White Xmas trees. That's it really.

White Christmas trees. Bleurgh.

No they are lovely especially with fuschia pink or turquoise baubles. I saw one in a magazine in 1965 and I have wanted one ever since!
I pretty much love anything except that revolting elf.

RainbowCrayons · 15/11/2022 02:45

I was thinking if I should start Elf on the shelf for DS. Thankfully a string of coughs, cold and HFM from nursery have put me off the idea of anything too much work and I would almost certainly run out of ideas by day 3 and spend the next 10 years resenting the bugger.

I love the 80s tat theme of my parents tree including hand made decorations from our own childhood. My dad bought multicolored lights with 20 different flashing settings, he was most upset when my mum and I got migraines and they had to stay firmly on the non-flashing setting. (I think one of the settings played tinny and off-key jingle bells while the lights flashed in time!)

I do go all out on Christmas pj's for the whole family and Christmas bedding but I'm hoping with time it will become as much a part of DS's Christmas as all the 80s tat was from mine.

emptythelitterbox · 15/11/2022 03:05

People who leave their flashing Christmas lights on all night.

Fladdermus · 14/11/2022 21:15

Traditionel Swedish jultomte are creepier than your British gonks. Yours at least have limbs.

WTF?
I have a feeling my DSis would like these lol

PeeJayDay · 15/11/2022 03:15

I love most of it although we make a real wreath and would never choose a door bow.

I have a lemax Christmas village that gets bigger every year. So glad that I haven't seen it mentioned here because I love it.

Hopefully theses won’t make a reappearance… my mum had a full set and I hated them. They are the most sullen , sad, depressed decorations I’ve ever come across. I used to go out and buy happy fat jolly versions to sneak into her house to counter the terror. Tell me this isn’t a Rasputin look alike.

Jesus Christ what the fuck is that?!?

AllThatAndMore · 15/11/2022 06:19

I don’t think I hate any Christmas decorations but I’m not a fan of a certain style. I don’t know how to explain it . My good friend decorated her tree with homemade cookie tree ornaments and pine cones. Her wrapping paper was brown paper . Her decor choice of colour was beige and black . To be fair to her, it looked beautiful but not Christmassy!

balalake · 15/11/2022 06:59

I dislike Christmas decorations being put up in November or earlier.

J0CASTA · 14/11/2022 22:54

Decorations with penguins and polar bears together.

Its just wrong Grin

I’ve got a penguin and a polar bear tree ornament, I’ll make sure they’re on opposite sides this year 😀

im going to colour co ordinate my (white) tree this year as my kids are grown now so I don’t feel the need to put all the kid stuff on like I used to. I love white trees, though my family beg to differ.

One day.... although this year DS is intent on a Lego Christmas village Xmas Smile

HeadNorth I know someone who puts the same star on her tree every year, a wobbly glittery thing made by her son at playgroup. Her son is 30 next spring.

We have a very wonky Angel our DD made at nursery when she was 12. We kept hinting that we might put something else on top of the tree but she isn't having any of it. Hopefully we'll manage to convince her before she is 30!

starlight36 · 15/11/2022 08:21

Made at nursery when she was 3 and is now 12.

BobbyBobbyBobby · 15/11/2022 08:59

Christmas Eve boxes.

Each year a new colour scheme for baubles, I like a tree to be an eclectic mix of old and new ornaments.

Flashing, all lights should be a gentle twinkle not something you would find at a rave.

Penguins. I like penguins just as much as the next person but they’re got bugger all to do with Christmas.

I used to hate a Christmas village as naff. But as I get older, I'm coming around to them. 😂

Re flashing lights - one thing that really bugs me is people who have them set to combination. So all the settings in sequence. Why?
Can they not work out how to change the default? Or do they WANT them like that?

Either way... I think less of them. 😂

Unicorn1919 · 15/11/2022 09:15

l hate all the migraine inducing flashing lights. My other hate is that there is so much cheap plastic tat everywhere. Christmas used to be about making your own paper decorations - much nicer.

The whole elf thing is just weird.

I do love to decorate my house but prefer to go out foraging for bits of holly and always get a real tree from Tesco that comes in a pot and I can plant somewhere afterwards. I love bringing out the same glass baubles that have been on the tree for years and finding the half burnt Christmas candles to make a table decoration.

ladyofshertonabbas · 15/11/2022 09:17

anything destined for landfill. Why do shops push the idea that we should buy loads of decs each year?

KimberleyClark · 15/11/2022 09:21

we have a fake tree. The sight of so many real trees chucked out with the rubbish after Christmas makes me sad.
