I just see so many posts where people seem to do everything they can to make others feel as small and stupid as possible.

I know there will be disagreement and debate on here but some people are so unnecessarily nasty they're like panto villains!

OP posts:
Laneyy · 13/11/2022 21:01

Tattle life is much more supportive to each other which says a lot 🤣🤣🤣

For what it's worth, I always enjoy your posts. You're always spot on IMO.

Thank you, I needed to hear that. At a low point today. 😓

That's not a fair comment - plenty of us here are childfree/childless - why do you think we are 'nastier' than posters with DC?

ilovesooty · 13/11/2022 21:02

walkersareback · 13/11/2022 20:57

And this kind of snarky comment - not big or clever.

As the fourth poster now who's waded in to berate me without reading the thread, could I politely refer you to the fact that I acknowledged the shortcomings in my tone ages ago upthread when I was politely challenged on it?

It's always been like that, in fact I think it's better than it used to be. When I first came on in 2007 I saw threads where the OP got a really nasty flaming and what made it worse was the cliques MN had then. Literally like playground bullies who dominated the boards and would make passive aggressive comments to eachother about the OP on the thread thinking they were hilarious. I think MN are more likely to remove posts and threads now too.

I remember this sort of thing too. I didn't really post for years.

Agree with the OP though.

BloodAndFire · 13/11/2022 21:08

SunshinePlease101 · 13/11/2022 18:48

Also there’s a lot of jealousy on here.

The things I've seen attributed to jealousy on here include criticism of 'baby on board' signs.

Really not something that is in any way unachievable by anyone who wants it.

'Jealous' is a very overused word here. As are 'bitter' and 'projecting'

Thedogscollar · 13/11/2022 21:08

Completely agree OP it's like a race to get the meanest comment in first.
There was a thread on here yesterday about the nastiness of replies on here and I mentioned how the mean girls seem to j get a kick out if it and a certain poster on here right now replied with an eye roll emoji and now on here is trying to backtrack after posting a sarcastic reply on this thread.
I honestly don't think it will change but I do reply to a bullying or nasty reply. People just love to have a dig as there's no real comeback on them but they have no idea how it can make the other person feel.

Since you mean me you might as well say so.

I'm not "trying to backtrack". I acknowledged that my tone in my first post could have been different when I was politely challenged: I felt the poster who challenged me had made a fair point.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/11/2022 21:15

EarringsandLipstick · 13/11/2022 20:24

Perfect example of the snarky idiotic commenters we are referring to.

Sooty replied saying she could have expressed it differently.

Always amazed that so many posters can't read the thread in full before jumping in to castigate someone. Several posters have done this, despite the subsequent post

4 pages of posts atm? Shocking some aren't studying it before posting. 🤦‍♀️

Squiblet · 13/11/2022 21:16

What I wish they had here is "upvote" and "downvote" arrows like they do on Reddit.

You can like or dislike each post. The most-liked ones rise to the top and the least-liked ones sink or almost disappear.

Generally, the wisdom of crowds ensures that good advice gets upvoted (and the wittiest posts!) and the mean, wrong or rude ones get downvoted to oblivion.

Yes this would be good most definitely.

Agree with the OP though.

I think with the norm of name changing, people are more anonymous nowadays on here (because they want to be) and you don't get cliques happening. It was quite tedious at times, especially as some would wittle on about being an original member etc as though they had some sort of superior status because of this.

Some of them were so rude and said things where if someone outside of the cliques had said it, they'd get a flaming. They'd also ignore other posters on some threads and talk to eachother. I took a long break, as in some years away because it was so tedious, then when I came back it had changed.

Ramble0n · 13/11/2022 21:27

I think a lot of the really nasty posters that seem to have appeared recently are just trolling the site.Much like the Bison/M & S weirdo.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/11/2022 21:27

It wasn't 4 pages at the start of the repeated posts targeting Sooty

And yeah, if people are going to comment negatively, it's worth a quick scroll to the end to see if the thread's moved on.

I'm not keen on that idea - it's too much of a target for trolls and sock puppets and also risks turning Mumsnet into a popularity contest. You can imagine, e.g. MRA trolls downvoting FWR posts to oblivion.

mrsg2019 · 13/11/2022 21:35

Bahaha op - so true!! Some of the things people put on here Shock I always think to myself - is this how people really think/behave?!

Hi sooty
Nice to hear that this thread has made you reflect on the tone of your reply.

Your post sums up the title of this thread.

Sooty immediately and politely corrected her post, yet people are still doing what I call a pile on.

I wonder if you would ever correct anything you posted? Doubtful.

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/11/2022 21:42

I get the feeling 99% of the posters aren’t anywhere near as ‘straight talking’/LTB in real life as they are on here.

ilovesooty · 13/11/2022 21:44

Thanks @Roussette .

LittlePearl · 13/11/2022 21:49

I completely agree OP, in fact I was thinking the same earlier today. I was doing some research of a topic the other day that took me to a number of old threads and the tone seemed much less vitriolic and more friendly.

I find some of the threads really depressing these days, just because the unpleasantness is quite disturbing. I know people like to say, well get off the site if you don't like it, but I enjoy being a mumsnetter and I don't want to leave. I just want posters to be a bit more civil to one another.

I'm not an avid 'Be Kind'-er, and I love a robust debate but there are ways to make your argument without sarcasm and insults. And to the posters who like to say 'Why are you bothered what a bunch of randoms say? It's not real life', if it's possible to offer genuine care, compassion and support online it's equally possible to be hurtful, rude and obnoxious. Criticising people who are offended by your bad behaviour heaps insult on top of insult.

Thedogscollar · 13/11/2022 21:52

@Roussette and @ilovesooty
Apologies if I have offended anyone as this thread is about the opposite of this.
I was perhaps upset at receiving an 🙄yesterday in reply to my post.

Squiblet · 13/11/2022 21:54

True, that would be super frustrating. I guess it only works when you have a large enough population of readers, so that any special interest group gets drowned out in the chorus. Maybe MN is not big enough for this.

Shame, as it would be so satisfying to downvote the spiteful posters, without having to engage with them directly...

i do get your point, though. 😊
