AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

To think some people come on Mumsnet solely to be the utter bitches they can't get away with being in real life.

I just see so many posts where people seem to do everything they can to make others feel as small and stupid as possible.

I know there will be disagreement and debate on here but some people are so unnecessarily nasty they're like panto villains!

Well if it walks like a bitch and talks like a bitch...........🤷‍♂️

Jellykat · 13/11/2022 19:22

Its definitely changed in the 10 years i've been here, guess people are a lot more pissed off and looking to vent these days.. it can be the MN version of road rage, just ignore the dicks i say!

Chailatteplease · 13/11/2022 19:22

YANBU.

CarefreeMe · 13/11/2022 19:23

Unfortunately any anonymous Internet forum is going to get lots of trolls and people trying to make people feel bad so they can feel less miserable about their own lives.

I have noticed on a few threads where one poster will also pick out a person they disagree with and be on them like a dog with a bone until they end up leaving the thread.

Lovetotravel123 · 13/11/2022 19:24

Totally agree. People come on here asking for help and advice and then get belittled for whatever choices have put them in their position. The tone of some replies is just nasty and demonstrates a lack of compassion.

DelorisVC · 13/11/2022 19:27

It's mostly on AIBU.
Not that it's an excuse.
I'm all for a robust debate and even a good old fashioned bun fight but there's a difference between that and just twatish oppositional behaviour, just for the hell of it.
There must be something wrong or missing with their lives to have to pull / pick people apart like that
I just smirk and scroll on by tbh. I'd much rather be me than them.

Slig · 13/11/2022 19:28

I never understand why posters "argue" with a rude/vile poster.

Just don't "feed" then. They love the argument and we all know in real life they are timorous wee beasties!

If posters just ignored them they wouldn't get their kicks and would hopefully fuck off.

BlackberrySky · 13/11/2022 19:28

As well as the outright bitches, there are the snipey comments they would never say in person. Who the hell tells an adult to "use your words" or "put on your big girl pants"?

Rosieisposy · 13/11/2022 19:29

I don’t think it’s true any more that it’s just an AIBU thing. It’s permeated throughout the site.

God forbid an OP admits to anything less than sainthood as well, or shows a bit of spirit and bites back. Then she’s taken to task.

PoundShopPrincess · 13/11/2022 19:34

Yy but that's the point for them. I'm not sure calling them 'bitches' puts you on the right side of this debate.
I think MN needs to bring back deleting for 'not being in the spirit of the site.'
As MN has become more high profile as a female source of support, there are tonnes of MRAs on here. Their purpose is to cause fights, give really bad advice and try to make women's lives worse whilst making MN look bad. They don't have RLs. And they aren't 'bitches'. They are very bitter blokes.

ItsTrueLou · 13/11/2022 19:37

The OG have long departed and the bored middle class mummy's are running amok. They tell you how you should live your life, but probably don't follow their own rules they are keyboard warriors, waiting for the school bell to be somebody's mummy again and have recognition by being active members of the PTA.

Others are journalists, looking for a topic to fill their weekly column about. I knew a crowd are hoping for an old style Mumsnet and simply not getting it time to change. Does anyone remember my space? exactly. Mumsnet is from the same generation dot-coms.

ItsTrueLou · 13/11/2022 19:37

Typos. The new crowd*

hassletassle · 13/11/2022 19:39

Yeah, there are a lot of cunts on here sadly.

DozyFox · 13/11/2022 19:39

I agree with @Thepeopleversuswork about certain topics being awful for this. It's impossible to have a productive or interesting conversation about those topics mentioned because the same old people (and it really is the same people every bloody time) derail every single thread about said topics with nasty, goady comments that they clearly think are oh-so clever. It's very frustrating and also quite odd how obsessive they are about it.

Zanatdy · 13/11/2022 19:41

It’s worse than ever lately, guarantee these women don’t say boo to a goose in the real world

ToInfinityAgain · 13/11/2022 19:41

BlackberrySky · 13/11/2022 19:28

As well as the outright bitches, there are the snipey comments they would never say in person. Who the hell tells an adult to "use your words" or "put on your big girl pants"?

I think that in some situations this sort of response comes from amazement that someone’s “struggling” with something that any normal person would have dealt with in the moment without issue.

Rosieisposy · 13/11/2022 19:43

So say that then. Don’t cloak it in ‘but I can’t possibly understand.’

mynameischloe · 13/11/2022 19:44

Yep. I got ripped to shreds on a thread where I was genuinely trying to help someone and offer advice which was correct as far as I was aware.

There's no way I would have been spoken to in the manner I was on here in real life.

It really upset me, actually.

BellePeppa · 13/11/2022 19:44

ilovesooty · 13/11/2022 18:49

So I take it you've challenged such posters on the relevant threads and reported personal attacks?

Lol you sound like one of the posters OP is talking about. Why say ‘So I take it you’ve …’. 🤷‍♀️

Montague22 · 13/11/2022 19:45

Totally agree. There is a place for straight talking but sometimes posters are deliberately mean.

ArcaneWireless · 13/11/2022 19:46

I’ve been here a while too and there has been a shift. Not just on aibu but more happy little threads too.

Ive been on the receiving end lately and it was easier all round to name change and abandon the threads I enjoyed. I am not the only one avoiding the happy threads either.

I’ve often thought about going out in a blaze of glory. It gets more tempting every day.

BellePeppa · 13/11/2022 19:46

Passmeaplacard · 13/11/2022 19:02

Agreed. A lot of the responses are horrible now. I don’t think I would start a thread

The idea of starting a thread terrifies me 🫣

Endofmyteatherr · 13/11/2022 19:47

Yes agree. Its the pointing out spelling mistakes and the sheep crowd that will just agree with anything. Even if it's bat shit crazy.

I remember the woman on the train with her toddler thread and the pile on was ridiculous blaming OP, assuming she hadn't tried to stop her crying toddler crying.

Recently I've learn MN is good at times.

Roomytrouser · 13/11/2022 19:48

I sometimes think this but I’ve been on MN for about 16 years now and I remember innocently starting my first thread - and promptly feeling ripped to shreds. I was much more circumspect after that.
