to think that my carer has stolen a knife and a fork?

FFS. Yes, yes, yes, yes. I realise how insane I sound.

Please tell me that I don't have a thief? I've been assigned a carer for a couple of weeks while I'm undergoing tests. I've noticed a knife and a fork is now missing (they come from an expensive set).

Am I going utterly insane or would somebody actually steel a knife and fork?

You sound like your home is not set up for living with staff/carers. So the first step would be to reorganise a little. Valuables should always be put away. I appreciate that’s harder with cutlery etc but you could ask them to wash it (silver should be hand washed anyway) and refill the canteen, or you could get a “kitchen set” that can be dishwashered to ease the load on everyone. Everything you need for a shower could be on a tray, as shouting for a hairbrush halfway through seems a bit much from both sides.

I've been unable to do much for months while I've been unwell so my house is in utter chaos. Being unwell physically and living alone means that I have not been able to cope. The cutlery is handwashed as I don't have a dishwasher.

The language barrier means that it's more effort than it's worth to try to explain things to them.

Mention to her it has gone missing and ask if can remember seeing it. This will warn her you notice if things go missing whilst not accusing her. Could she have thrown it into rubbish bin by mistake? I have silver plated cutlery and would be upset if part of my set went missing. I use it everyday but still have storage box.

I've already phoned the agency and cancelled the contract with them.

I saw a funny post somewhere about missing cutlery and people concluded that they died and were reincarnated as coat-hangers! 😁

It is a well-known scientific FACT that teaspoons are the larval form of wire-coathangers knitting.

I once read a scientific paper about it.

😄

I feel for you op, I once had a bucket stolen, silver it was

Maybe she is bored of her job and just randomly steals an item of small value from every house she enters and didn’t know they are actually expensive?

Anyway OP, you have my sympathy as this would drive me bonkers if I couldn’t find them!

That being said, I have very much enjoyed all the cutlery puns on this thread.

Well, she spends her time reading Hollybook, so, she doesn't have much asked of her.

I'm convinced my knife and fork are reincarnated now. God bless their souls.

A new person, responsible for putting stuff away - any chance its in the wrong place?

amatsip · 13/11/2022 14:05

Maybe she forgot her cutlery for her lunch and borrowed yours intending to bring it back next visit?

NiceGarden · 13/11/2022 14:09

HRTFT, can you order the missing items from the Sambonet website?

mileaminute · 13/11/2022 14:11

My cleaner was once accused of stealing her old clients cats ashes. And a pair of his jeans.

She didn't do any cleaning. She accompanied me to hospital.

That's not funny. I'm not delusional, paranoid or hallucinating. Even if I was, your cheap shot is cheap.

I don't know why you're getting a hard time OP. It must be difficult having someone you don't know in your own home. Could you tell her you've lost a knife and fork and could she help you look for it?

Sorry but this made me laugh Grin

'Could you help me find my knife and fork?'

YANBU. Many manufacturers make knives and forks from steel.

😂

<wondering if that was the same one who stole the contents of my Nanna's cat litter tray>

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/11/2022 14:21

I don't actually know how many items of cutlery I have so I wouldn't miss any. I do know that I seem to use a lot of teaspoons a day, even though I live alone.

TitInATrance · 13/11/2022 14:24

Years ago I had a ceiling plastered, and the plaster’s mate mentioned that he had the same set of cheap cutlery - 4 settings from Woolworths, hanging on a stand. When the job was finished I was a teaspoon short - I still glare at the plasterer if I see him.

I don't think care staff are for you. You say your home is unfortunately in a state of chaos as a result of your health BUT your go to is that the carer stole something.

I'm sorry, I often accompany people all sorts of places and recently quit care. I'm sure there ARE theives in the role. But you deserve to trust the people in your home and people doing their job should feel they are rrusted to do that - but your comments about hairbrushes etc show you dont. . Obviously there's a reason your go to is blaming the carer, maybe it's them, maybe it's you. I'd not continue working with someone who felt so untrusting of me as Obviously I'd failed to build the necessary rapport.

Frankly, as a carer, you're being paid. I'm not being paid to trust my carers. My carers are paid to care for me.

ticktocktickboom · 13/11/2022 14:35

It has hit me hard more so because I was very understanding of them and their religions (for example pork was an issue). I trusted them completely. It didn't occur to me not to trust them. I really thought that we had built up a good rapport. The betrayal is the biggest shock.

You should be ashamed of yourselves laughing about dementia or other debilitating illnesses. I bet you'll want their inheritance. Disgusting to read.
