to think that my carer has stolen a knife and a fork?

FFS. Yes, yes, yes, yes. I realise how insane I sound.

Please tell me that I don't have a thief? I've been assigned a carer for a couple of weeks while I'm undergoing tests. I've noticed a knife and a fork is now missing (they come from an expensive set).

Am I going utterly insane or would somebody actually steel a knife and fork?

I....no I don't think a cleaner sat in your house reading the bible whilst you were in the shower, a house full of valuables, and went over to the cutlery drawer and stole a knife and fork.

She's not a cleaner, she's a carer. A cleaner wouldn't be believable because we all know self employed tradespeople including cleaners earn much more than stealing a knife and fork would be worth.

Tbf it's entirely possible that's she "borrowed" them to eat a packed lunch or something and has forgotten to return them.

I'd suggest asking her (in an entirely neutral non accusatory tone of voice!) whether she might have used them as you can't find them and see what she says.

She arrived at 9.45am and left at 12.15pm. No eating was done by either of us during that time. The only time when she was alone was 20 minutes while I was taking a shower.

I think I'll just presume that I have lost my marbles finally lol. Because I cannot think of one person who would steal a knife and a fork (unless it was a test as to how brain dead I am).

It wasn't the bible. It was a different book.

Ask her when she’s next in if she’s seen them or if she can help you find them.

The helping you find them gives her the option of returning them if she did indeed borrow them. That’s all I can think of at the mo.

sorry you are unwell OP.

Be careful OP, you don’t want to suspect the prong person

Well I know it wasn't me and she is the only person who has been here.

Perhaps she was praying for forgiveness?

I have stolen cutlery a few times

By accident

Various tea spoons from friends (to feed baby, then absentmindedly put baby food, spoon and bib back in my handbag

Also a knife and fork when I ate a home made salad at work, then put employers knife and spoon in Tupperware box, and home

I have various rogue bits of cutlery in my drawer

Maybe I was a magpie in my last life. Or your career

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 12/11/2022 00:34

Is it possible the carer saw the canteen in its lovely box and took 2 away to check out a possible value with a connection with plans to take the rest if they are deemed to be valuable enough? Or am I loopy too?

Perhaps move where you store the canteen, OP.

Mookie81 · 12/11/2022 00:37

Is she also wearing your favourite bra and jeans?

ElmoNeedsThePotty · 12/11/2022 00:37

This cutlery thief would’nt just happen to be a different ethnicity would they OP?

Oh fgs some of the posts on here are ridiculous. Just because it's cutlery doesn't mean it's okay or not important to the OP. If they're missing and she's the only person who's been in... There are matching services online where you may be able to replace the missing knife and fork. Happened to us when we had some work done. I think one the guys borrowed the cutlery to eat lunch and accidentally took it home.

Ariela · 12/11/2022 00:50

When she next comes, why don't you ask her if she did any tidying when you were having a shower as you can see a knife and fork has gone missing, and if so, where did she put it.

albapunk · 12/11/2022 00:58

Care Assistant here.

I've left clients homes before and accidently took cutlery, socks, the cordless phone, remote, toiletries etc because I've either used it or picked it up cleaning/caring for my client.

Is this a private care arrangement? Most carers don't have time to sit and read and can barely get the job of actual caring done because of how little time is allocated.

I'm not sure why you don't just ask the carer? I've been asked have I seen XYZ before and chances are I have, or could tell you where I last saw it. If I didn't know then I'd offer to look but you'd be able to tell if I was lying or not although dunno if I could keep a straight face over a "stolen" fork!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/11/2022 01:00

I would worry when she takes the whole lot.

frozengoose · 12/11/2022 01:10

I wonder if she borrowed it to scarf down a meal and it ended up up in the Tupperware box back home.
I've that with work cutlery a few times.

How does one misplace a knife and fork!

9/10 my forks, spoons and knives end up in my dd's bedroom

I'm not paranoid. I can count from one to 6 though.

If you paid £160 for a canteen of cutlery with only 6 place setting, you were already robbed. Grin

In my family, my uncles and aunts used to do this to each other! Every time one had a luncheon or dinner party, one (or possibly more) of the siblings would secrete some item away and take it home. I don’t know whether it was some sibling rivalry thing but one aunt, who had a gorgeous gold plated cutlery set (don’t ask!), ended up using plastic cutlery and plates (like the ones you would use for picnics) every time she invited her siblings for anything. Which would sound hilarious but just after I moved to the country where I now live, my uncle (who came to my house frequently for dinner) nicked a spoon from my set, so yeah, I’m a spoon short of a picnic now 🤣
