to think that my carer has stolen a knife and a fork?

FFS. Yes, yes, yes, yes. I realise how insane I sound.

Please tell me that I don't have a thief? I've been assigned a carer for a couple of weeks while I'm undergoing tests. I've noticed a knife and a fork is now missing (they come from an expensive set).

Am I going utterly insane or would somebody actually steel a knife and fork?

This looks like a two pronged attack to me...... 🤔

ladydimitrescu · 11/11/2022 23:56

Ok, but you haven't answered if you've actually looked elsewhere for them? Or if you've used them today?

There are only so many places where a knife and a fork might hang out! And obviously, yes, I've checked. I've checked everywhere one might end up.

Well then, the only option is to get down to cash converters and assume they'll be there waiting to be reunited with you.
Padlocks on all utensils from now on.

DixonD · 11/11/2022 23:59

Are you Monica (Geller)?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 12/11/2022 00:00

Lol… not sure if this is real or not (heyho giving the benefit of doubt…people do steal weird things just because they can).

#not all carers (or cleaners). But do think about a small safe for valuables if you are in a position to have people in your home or are helping someone else who has people in their home.

I’m not suggesting locking up the cutlery (unless it’s legitimate silver) because we’ll that would be odd. But hey I guess better safe than sorry

Tessabelle74 · 12/11/2022 00:00

So she's alone for 20 minutes, surrounded by stuff that is OBVIOUSLY valuable, phone, laptop etc and she goes for a knife and fork? Seriously? I think you're a spoon short of a canteen myself

I presume you're one?

Why?

SaladBarNanny · 12/11/2022 00:03

Did you accidentally chuck them away when scraping a plate?

JestersTear · 12/11/2022 00:03

For £160 I would assume it's a nice canteen of cutlery, and not kept in a drawer but rather a box? In which case it would be obvious that some were missing. If kept in a drawer, then they might be easier to misplace.
Do you use the set for best, which might mean you hadn't noticed in a while until today, or do you use it as your ' day-to-day' set? Just thinking that if it were the former, then they might have gone missing at an earlier time, and you're making an assumption that it's the carer? If you use them daily then of course you'd notice straight away.

ticktocktickboom · 12/11/2022 00:03

kittensinthekitchen · 12/11/2022 00:02

Why?

How many times are you going to ask?

Why? Figure it out.

I haven't entirely lost my marbles yet (just a knife and fork) 😂

I was going to keep asking, because I'm not sure what you are suggesting.

ladydimitrescu · 12/11/2022 00:06

Are you suggesting there's something wrong with being a cleaner now?

No, they're in a drawer. The cutlery drawer! Well, apart from two, which have been kidnapped. I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity, to please call the confidential theft telephone line. Mammy and Daddy want their babies back.

No more questions.

No - but she did.

Hi. Welcome to Mumsnet.

thaegumathteth · 12/11/2022 00:08

I....no I don't think a cleaner sat in your house reading the bible whilst you were in the shower, a house full of valuables, and went over to the cutlery drawer and stole a knife and fork.

SaladBarNanny · 12/11/2022 00:08

Ok then. Yawn. This thread isn't nearly as amusing as some others tonight. 3/10 for effort.

It would need to be seen to be believed.

They obviously haven’t been stolen because you’d take the matching spoon too.

Am I going utterly insane or would somebody actually steel a knife and fork?

YANBU. Many manufacturers make knives and forks from steel.

No need to stick the knife in for forks sake!

NickEccles · 11/11/2022 23:57

Then we need a two prong defence. Sleep with them under your pillow, the carer will never think to look there and if it's a different thief you're ready to fork them over.

Op, I think it's unlikely anyone would steal a single knife and fork. I'm sure they'll turn up again.

GAH3 · 12/11/2022 00:23

Tbf it's entirely possible that's she "borrowed" them to eat a packed lunch or something and has forgotten to return them.

I'd suggest asking her (in an entirely neutral non accusatory tone of voice!) whether she might have used them as you can't find them and see what she says.
