To think you reach an age where getting totally pissed is a bit pathetic?

Maybe I'm missing something?

I enjoy a drink but I'm the sort of person who can have a glass of wine and not need to finish the bottle.

Middle aged DH went out and came home unable to string a sentence together, and couldn't understand why I was irritated. I have no objections at all to him going out, but I just feel when you get past the going out clubbing stage, you should know when you've had enough?

@micedontpaint I'd like to think that now he's got responsibilities, he won't get into that state again. I'm not going to force him to do anything, it's up to him.

Alcohol is a very addictive substance and so it is very difficult for some to stop once they have started - thoughts of moderation go out of the window.

Over the age of 20 is pathetic tbh

PAFMO · 05/11/2022 07:55

@VioletPickles it's a FB page for prospective university students/parents. As its FB which apparently no young people use, it tends to be mainly parents posting, anything from best place to buy a mattress topper to daughters feeling they need to leave because a drunk male student didn't take no for an answer.

Thanks x

Its one thing to have a few drinks and be a little giggly and merry but once it impacts on the ability to speak coherently or walk without falling over that is when it becomes pathetic. Most people are aware of their limit by late forties so it shouldn't really happen by that age.

iloveeverykindofcat · 05/11/2022 16:37

@Galaktoboureko in my younger days I had one housemate who was a binge drinker and one that smoked weed (not at the same time). The binge drinker loud, disruptive, messy and gross. The pot smoker just smoked in her room and didn't bother anyone. Once she ate all the jam -just the jam - but that was the worst of it. And she did replace it.

You can buy loads of good alcohol free wine. Frexinet do a fantastic range.

You can't buy ANY good alcohol free wine. It's an oxymoron and they are all complete shit. It's simply not possible, as yet.

TheBirdintheCave · 05/11/2022 16:48

This is what made me realise that my childhood friends and I weren't on the same page anymore. A few years ago (we were in our early thirties) we went on holiday together and they wanted to go drinking most nights whereas I preferred to go to bed at 11pm. Not generally a problem but they were quite critical of me for wanting to stay in the hotel instead. On the last night one of them got so drunk she had to be taken to hospital 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ We used to go on holiday together every year but that incident was the end of that.

BHRK · 05/11/2022 16:53

Oh wow, you’re being harsh and uptight. As long as he doesn’t do it every weekend what’s the problem? So judgmental. It’s fine once in a while, many fun-loving adults do it. Chill out

OldKingCole · 05/11/2022 17:02

@PurpleButterflyWings

He was still there the next morning, six hours later. Lying on the drive.

you left him there????
I actually think you sound worse than him. That’s disgraceful.

My partner does this. We've just had a baby so I'm hoping it doesn't happen again, but in the past he's come home and he actually looks like he's had some sort of lobotomy, it's awful. He's in his 40s!! I find it pathetic, and also deeply unattractive.

Sorry to ask but why on earth did you have a baby with someone like this??

You deserve better
Your baby deserves a good role model

Get rid

chillidoritto · 05/11/2022 23:31

God there's some dull old farts on here!!!!

Discovereads · 05/11/2022 23:38

To think you reach an age where getting totally pissed is a bit pathetic?

Not really, if it’s regular as in alcohol dependent, that’s not pathetic but a concerning addiction.

If it’s the odd blow out, who cares how old you are? It’s a bit ageist to imply that Nan can’t get sozzled on brandy and sherry at the family Christmas dinner because she’s old and wrinkly, but her twin 18yo granddaughters Brandi and Sheri can go clubbing and have a grand old time because they’re young and sexy.

Same for men too. Sometimes in this world of stress and strife, we all want a night of oblivion. That’s not something to be ashamed of or shame someone for.

Itisbetter · 05/11/2022 23:38

God there's some dull old farts on here!!!!
are people still trying to shame people for not drinking by characterising them as “dull”😆😆😆 how very 80s!

Your “limit” changes over time though depending on how much you usually drink, altitude, what/when you last ate, body weight, and age.

Manasprey · 05/11/2022 23:44

And yet people are being shamed for liking a drink, like it's some massive moral failure and we're all Victorians and temperance is going to get you a first class ticket to heaven.

Manasprey · 05/11/2022 23:48

Yes, my cycle affects my limit, massively. But my cycle is also fairly erratic, so what usually would barely affect me suddenly knocks me out. And why hangovers can still take me by surprise.
The place and drink also has an effect.

Shouldawouldacoulda30 · 05/11/2022 23:52

Myself and my friends were teetotal when our children were younger .
we are now in our 50s and definitely enjoy booze occasionally without getting massively pissed .
Great get togethers and one of our children drive us home. Payback time …we paid for their lessons and cars !

blackheartsgirl · 06/11/2022 00:48

Now and again when it’s a group is fine.

every weekend nope.

i used to drink a fair bit in my youth but now I’ve hit 45 I’m not that keen. I hate the sickness and the headache these days.

however I went to a family party last year3 months after dh died. Didn’t want to go and neither did my sil. Didn’t intend to drink and was intending to leave early.

sil, me and her family got blotted, danced and laughed till midnight and turned into..after all the recent heartbreak..one of the best nights I’ve ever had. I had an awful hangover though.

haven’t done it since. No desire too

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 06/11/2022 01:02

Fuck that.

Ill go out clubbing as long as I can dance and hear.

I don’t like being told I’m “too old” to do perfectly normal things.

I don’t tend to go clubbing though as the irony is, like the old gimmer I am, I get tired easily and cannot handle my hangovers!

MangyInseam · 06/11/2022 01:11

Yeah, I do think there is a point where it becomes sort of pathetic. And I love going out dancing etc. Not the same as getting a bit tipsy, but getting really plastered is lame.

I sometimes wonder if people who do this when they are older realize that usually they stop being fun, and they often embarrass the people they are with.

Creameggs223 · 06/11/2022 01:46

I missed the rule where only younger people could get pissed and no sex after 50. If he wants to get pissed let him life really is to short!!!

No. People are being "shamed" for being adults with responsibilities to jobs and families yet being so infantile they wake up in their own vomit and piss.

iloveeverykindofcat · 06/11/2022 07:07

@PAFMO Exactly. No-one is shaming someone for a drink or too. I'll have one a few myself on occasion and probably wake up with a headache. But vomiting, passing out, falling over, being totally incapacitated the next day and dismissing it as 'a laugh' - yes, I'm judging. If you never see an adult do that consider yourself lucky.

You missed it because it hasn't been said. By anyone.
Rape has been mentioned. Due to alcohol. Did you mean that?
