I work in conveyancing and I have noticed a huge upsurge in people from England trying to sell up and move to Scotland. I know they will get more for their money up there but someone today and yesterday were total pissed off the Government. I am sure it works both ways and there is an influx to England but has anyone noticed a difference - particularly people from London especially.

For those thinking about moving as a way to get back into the EU, there's no rush!
Political commentators were discussing this on tv last week. They were saying if Scotland voted for independence next year
it would take several years to negotiate a divorce agreement and separate everything. Then Scotland would have to establish a new currency and then meet all the financial criteria which could take a few years. Then apply to join the EU would would then also take a few years.
They were reckoning realistically it could be 10-15 years away

What sort of commentators?

Roomytrouser · 05/11/2022 00:12

Fair enough. I’ll look into specifically what areas are going to be most impacted by the cuts announced this week, I’m sure the people hit by the service cuts will be glad to be relying on charity instead.

StrataZon · 05/11/2022 00:14

I can't remember exactly who @Trez1510 but was on one of the Scottish news programmes. There had been an interview with John swinnney first

Blinky21 · 05/11/2022 00:31

I'll move to Scotland if and when it becomes independent, if they will have me, just want to get away from the Tories

Trez1510 · 05/11/2022 00:35

@StrataZon - I'll have a wee look, although if it's merely political commentators, as opposed to expert commentators, I expect it will simply be a rehashed version of Project Fear. 😉

Move now, and vote for it!

If you're fleeing the persecution of Tories, due to not being a six-figure salary earner, you'll be welcomed with open arms. 😊

Where are the figures in this? I thought the divide opened up again this year.

There are two factors here

  1. more kids from deprived areas and care experienced are achieving more qualifications.
  2. The attainment gap between deprived and non-deprived schools. So, kids in deprived schools have been doing better but not as well as those in non- deprived. However, a huge amount of work has been done to tackle this. There has been some improvements but COVID introduced more factors that had a detrimental impact on kids living in deprived circumstances.
if you’ve got the time or the inclination you can have a look at this -

And they don't allow for the offers over system so don't realise the house will sell for considerably more than the advertised price

is there a rule of thumb for how much they tend to go over?

It depends on demand, you could easily pay at least 25% over. Quite often a house will go to bids so you have to go as high as possible, in Glasgow people are offering crazy amounts over right now.

Binkybix · 05/11/2022 01:40

Thanks @Amortentia

TomTraubertsBlues · 05/11/2022 09:35

It's heavily area dependent though - you have to research what sort of % over is normal in the area you're looking at.

TomTraubertsBlues · 05/11/2022 09:38

I have family and friends in Scotland, and visit various parts of Scotland often. I don't recognise the claims of widespread anti-english racism that are being made, as I've never experienced it. And the idea that most people won't even holiday there any more - nonsense!

Sometimes people hear my accent and ask where I'm from, but that's it. Never had any aggro or nastiness.

10-15 years is a lot closer than the rest of the UK is though, isn't it? The UK isn't going to be applying to rejoin any time soon.

Perhaps it's a government plot to massively populate Scotland with English people to vote against independence😂😂😂

Or to create some kind of economy to pay for all the gov handouts and spending ;)

My postman is from London he was telling me the other day that most of them stay and work like dogs in London until there late 50s then move to Scotland to buy cheaper do less hours and retire early. Additionally my aunt and uncle on my mums side both moved there whole family’s from London to Scotland because of pricing and also for lifestyle issues. I’m grateful to live in Scotland for many reasons but I do love the English too it’s sad there is such a divide in this day and age over an accent

Over an accent?

What a strawman argument

Most London postman work like dogs in London then retire to Scotland?

How odd.

Stephy1886 · 05/11/2022 10:40

This has turned from someone’s observation about possibly more people moving to Scotland in an attempt to get more from their money, to people broad brushing anti English behaviour.
in the west you will find the majority don’t care about your accent. Like others have said you may be asked where you are originally from
In a city on the east such as Edinburgh it really doesn’t matter what accent you have. It’s a big melting pot.

wrt the original topic it’s not uncommon for houses to go for 30k+ over asking. House is advertised offers over valuation, goes to a closing date & biggest price wins.

Spain absolutely does have a problem with the idea of Scottish independence as an independence. For the same reason Spain has never recognised Kosovo as an independent state.

Yes, because Kosovo did a UDI, again not a legal referendum!

Luckydip1 · 05/11/2022 13:10

It's worth moving to Scotland to get the extra benefits and small chance of getting back into EU

derxa · 05/11/2022 13:41

People wanting to get away from Tories? They'll be out in a couple of years
