I work in conveyancing and I have noticed a huge upsurge in people from England trying to sell up and move to Scotland. I know they will get more for their money up there but someone today and yesterday were total pissed off the Government. I am sure it works both ways and there is an influx to England but has anyone noticed a difference - particularly people from London especially.

No, actually @Blocked, you were swallowing and repeating an outright lie. Not maliciously I'm sure, but nonsense regardless.

No actually @XingMing I was asking a question.

FieldMapleMabel · 04/11/2022 22:42

What does this mean?

No sane female would want to move to Scotland where the SNP are systematically destroying women's sex based rights.

MadMadMadamMim · 04/11/2022 21:12

Strange stereotype. I get the London comparison, but nothing else.

We'd like to live in Scotland. DH is from Edinburgh. We get far more for our money in the North of England where I'm from and therefore live there, sadly. Every time I've property searched in Scotland (have a vague hankering for the Western Isles) I'm utterly shocked at how damned expensive a detached house with a decent sized garden would be.

My MIL genuinely can't seem to grasp that we can't afford to live in Scotland - or at least would have a far smaller house with a lot less outdoor space in comparison to what we have in England, and I'm not prepared to lower my quality of life like that.

I live in Edinburgh, we could get a bigger house in my in-laws leafy village in the Home Counties for less money.

I come from rural Scotland and there were always loads of English people around. Most of my school friends were English. Up here in Edinburgh, the biggest Indy supporters I know are English.

Backtothenineties · 04/11/2022 22:45

Please can someone explain what they mean about Scotland and safeguarding issues and what a TERF is?
I feel so old reading threads lately as I have no idea what abbreviations mean!

Halloweenshock · 04/11/2022 22:28

i really don’t see Scotland as a cheap place to live. There are cheap houses in areas of deprivation, but they are cheap for a reason. Edinburgh is on a par with any other big UK city outside of London - very expensive to live somewhere nice.

I agree. I've considered moving to Scotland, and might still do so, but houses in most Scottish areas are no cheaper where I live now. (Northern England)

StrataZon · 04/11/2022 22:51

DemBonesDemBones · 04/11/2022 22:35

@StrataZon but they're not as beautiful as Scotland (unofficial poll of one, me Grin)

Oh I agree entirelySmile
I'm just always amazed that people think houses are much cheaper in Scotland. Apart from a few areas they're really not.
And they don't allow for the offers over system so don't realise the house will sell for considerably more than the advertised price.

They must be pretty stupid, Scotlands chance of joining the EU - with their new Scottish pound currency, huge debts and unsustainable living standards outside the U.K. means their chances are zero.
So either your friends are dim witted or this is made up,
Most people I know won’t even holiday in Scotland now, such is the anti English sentiment - and we are half Scottish and can’t imagine we will return to see our family. They now come to visit us, and are devastated by the racism directed at their English family. It’s not all of Scotland that feel this way, but all that can be heard is the SNP and it’s poisoning relationships as it was intended to do..

Where (vaguely) is this? I have an English accent as does DH and apart from being called “posh” the odd time at school I’ve never had any issues. I work in quite an “Indy” county and and I’ve never had anyone say anything. What kind of things do people say?

Roomytrouser · 04/11/2022 22:54

Amortentia · 04/11/2022 21:20

Yes, more children in deprived areas or who have been cared for by the state are achieving more qualifications than they ever have before. Isn’t that great?

Where are the figures in this? I thought the divide opened up again this year.

Theglowofcandles · 04/11/2022 22:55

Worriedddd · 04/11/2022 21:27

I considered moving to Scotland, my grandparents and my mum live there. I have an English accent as does my DD. I would move there but there's so much xenophobia because of my accent. Both sides of my family are Scottish heritage.

@Worriedddd have you actually experienced that? I'm Scottish, my Mum is English. My Mum has lived here, in Central Scotland, for over 50 years. She gets no bother at all. Maybe the odd twat every 10 years or so but that odd twat does not represent the rest of us Scottish folk.

My daughter is Scottish, goes to primary school, and has friends in her class from Poland, America, England, Turkey.

Yes you may come across the odd arsehole, but that is exactly what they are, arseholes, and you get them in every country.

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/11/2022 22:59

Cheaper property is a red herring - north of England is just as cheap, even cheaper in parts than Scotland.

My DCs have English accents. Sometimes their friends observe they “sound English” and they say “I know”. I don’t doubt there will be areas where the reaction might be a more barbed comment but honestly neither me or DH have experienced it.

As a Scot I'm really enjoying being told how wee we are, how poor we are, and just how stupid we are by non-Scots.

No, seriously, I am.

I just wonder why non-Scots don't demand their own independence from the sponging Jocks? Why don't their masters want to offload the sponging Jocks?

Meanwhile, I'll just continue to thank the non-Scots for our free university tuition, free personal care, free prescriptions, free bridge tolls, free hospital car parking, carers' additional supplements, additional child supplements (£25 per child, per week), free bus passes for young people, and free baby boxes to welcome every new Scot.

I am specifically grateful due to the fact non-Scots deny themselves all of these things in order to provide them to us.

Thank you so very, very much.

I really wish some of this was means tested. I can afford to pay and I would rather I did and those cuts that John Swinney has announced be less severe.

NoDairyNoProblem · 04/11/2022 23:12

We are Scottish and between the DC they have friends that are English, Portuguese, Friench, Syrian, Polish, American, Canadian and Ukrainian. In one DC’s class they celebrate Christmas, Easter, Ramadan, Chinese NY, Passover and Diwali due to the wonderful diversity in her class.

Google the GERS figures. Scotland spends more than £2k per person than it raises. This is funded by the Barnett formula. Do a bit of basic research!

There are only two regions of the UK that raise more in tax than they spend - the South East of England and the Greater London area.

Lots of English retirees where I grew up in rural Scotland, moving there after spending their tax-earning life in England.

Are they all as charming and polite as you? Just a thought.

It's quite amusing to claim that my post must be fictional, or that the people I know are 'stupid' simply because of your opinion on rejoicing the EU 😂

But then, given the hyperbolic remainder of your post, I'll take it all with large pinch of Maldon.

My family have lived in Scotland for decades, btw.

I would rather the government stopped subsidising those who can afford it at the expense of those who can afford it the least.

Well said, indeed!

I'm mightily scunnered with people (who may not even ever have visited Scotland) telling me what's wrong with my country, our attitudes, our politics etc. etc. etc.

Smacks very much of the very colonialism from which we strive to be free. Particularly so when you just know, in your bones, if say the French or Germans or Indians or Americans or anyone else attempted a similar lecture aimed at them they'd become completely enraged ..... 🙂

We moved from England to Scotland this summer.

Well, that's not going to happen.

I'm glad that's so because having read so many threads on here where people should be able to manage on their salaries, they simply cannot.

There's one thread on here where people are unable to afford eye tests, their prescriptions, dental check ups etc. etc.

I'd genuinely suggest anyone who believes they are receiving a 'benefit' to which they do not feel entitled, they contribute the same amount to a relevant charity to assuage their 'guilt' or 'anger'.

Similar to what many others, across the UK, are doing with their non means-tested £400 energy 'benefit' from the UK government.

Endlesssummer2022 · 04/11/2022 23:33

DH and I have discussed this on and off since the EU referendum. We just don’t like Tory politics, but there’s a section of the English who go weak at the knees for toffs so will vote in any old bollocks if it sounds upper class.

I can’t see any way but down for the UK currently. The only issue is DHs concerns about the weather. I

Puffalicious · 04/11/2022 23:37

The issue isn't about ordinary folk moving here; it's about people selling London properties at massively inflated prices, then coming up to Scotland to buy up property, thus pushing prices up so that local families/ young people can never afford to buy a property. It's been happening for years.

It's happened all over Cornwall, and is happening in Northumberland right now.

I'm absolutely sick of going to Skye/ Arran and I hear fewer and fewer Scottish voices; St Andrews has been a joke for decades.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 04/11/2022 23:55

I live in pretty perthshire and for c. 500K you get a stone farmhouse with steadings normally with a bit converted into home office/ holiday cottage. It is a trek back down South but the sleeper train is full of people who travel down for 2-3 days and work from home the rest of the time.

I get the appeal. No neighbours. Decent size garden. If you can work from home then it can make really good financial sense.
