I work in conveyancing and I have noticed a huge upsurge in people from England trying to sell up and move to Scotland. I know they will get more for their money up there but someone today and yesterday were total pissed off the Government. I am sure it works both ways and there is an influx to England but has anyone noticed a difference - particularly people from London especially.

Every new rural property round me has been bought by people from England. Absolutely no hate, I don't blame them for wanting more for their money BUT It makes me sad for young couples who want to stay local who could afford to buy at asking price but get blown out the water by over offers from these folk.

On the other hand if I was selling why would I say no to 20k more than asking?

It's a hard one.

Au contraire! The couple I know who has moved up to Scotland will vote for independence in the hope that Scotland will (re)join the EU.

This. i would definitely consider moving up if i thought I might be able to get my EU membership back.

Luckydip1 · 04/11/2022 20:15

Is social care free in Scotland?

Echobelly · 04/11/2022 20:23

I don't blame people - if I didn't have so many connections in London I'd consider it too. England is a roaring bin fire, the United Kingdom is going to fall apart and Scotland will go independent and rejoin Europe, so it's totally reasonable that people should want to move there.

Before the dynamic duo crashed the housing market a few weeks back, there were a few reports in our newspapers in Northern Ireland describing an upsurge in the number of English people seeking homes in Northern Ireland, not just ex pats returning, but generally. Family homes in naice towns like Bangor were particularly sought after, one estate agent said he had 18 viewings booked for one house within 24 hours of a listing. So perhaps it is happening in Scotland too, though I thought the whole market was currently in a state of suspended animation.

Is this another bot bot post?

Can I ask what a bot bot post is?

rwalker · 04/11/2022 20:27

I know a few people who have moved to Scotland non have been politically motivated

cheap houses open space and fewer people

Dreikanter · 04/11/2022 20:29

We went the other way (mainly for the weather).

I worry about the way the SNP/Greens are going with GRC reforms and the repercussions for women and girls.

Plus the CfE has not been a great success - Scottish education was the envy of the world. Not any more.

healthadvice123 · 04/11/2022 20:31

Maybe but that would just be in your area so hard to know if it is a trend or not

Everything seems to turn into a bun fight on here.

It depends on the topic, and how reasonable or unreasonable the ops original op is.

healthadvice123 · 04/11/2022 20:31

@CharlotteStreet then they don't understand how the eu works and how you can't just join because you want to

catandcoffee · 04/11/2022 20:33

I'd imagine if this is true there will be a massive backlash.
People selling will up the price and the Scottish will be priced out.

Zib · 04/11/2022 20:34

I love Scotland but my kids are approaching university age and we'd have to send them to English universities because of the lack of places for kids outside the deprived postcodes.

There’s a lot more people moving to NI, although usually one is a returner.

Plenty of good reasons to.

qualitychat · 04/11/2022 20:40

The prices here have shot through the roof and the housing market has been booming, dropped off a bit recently because of the Government shit show. What are the safe guarding issues? For the former poster who asked yes, adults do get free personal care in Scotland - my aunt has carers come in 4 times a day, doesn't cost her anything.

I can see why people are relocating to NI, the benefits of EU membership being the major one.

qualitychat · 04/11/2022 20:41

Not Jimmy Krankie's most massive fan though and I am sick of the Indyref2 constantly getting mentioned. It would cost millions - we don't have the money.

Luckydip1 · 04/11/2022 20:43

@Hooverphobe actually your wrong, social care and nursing care are free in Scotland for the over 65s. That's a massive bonus if your at retirement age.

boopan · 04/11/2022 20:44

I am a conveyancing solicitor and have one client out of around 300 who is moving to Scotland, so hardly some sort of mass movement Halloween Confused

Babyroobs · 04/11/2022 20:45

Free everything in Scotland - tuition fees, prescriptions etc. Not sure how long you have to live there to qualify though. Higher energy costs though I would imagine !!

Amortentia · 04/11/2022 20:47

Funnily enough I was ready something last week about early retirees moving to the Highlands. They are pricing younger people and those in lower incomes out of the housing market. The lack of workers from the EU because of Brexit and not enough people to fill minimum paid jobs is a huge problem in the making. There will not be enough people to provide at home care for such a widely spread out area. Resulting in many people having to be transferred to care homes far from their homes.
