I work in conveyancing and I have noticed a huge upsurge in people from England trying to sell up and move to Scotland. I know they will get more for their money up there but someone today and yesterday were total pissed off the Government. I am sure it works both ways and there is an influx to England but has anyone noticed a difference - particularly people from London especially.

its most definitely education! The standards in Scotland are now so low that any child failing in England can move to Scotland and to top of the class and fast track their uni options

This is just offensive nonsense.

XingMing · 04/11/2022 21:08

I seriously think that the EU will not want to admit another economy needing investment. The gas and oil are appealing, but sensible Scotland will want to ring fence them into a sovereign wealth fund, a la Norway, as much as is allowed. Re electricity, it's bought and sold in the spot market.

Every new rural property round me has been bought by people from England. Absolutely no hate, I don't blame them for wanting more for their money BUT It makes me sad for young couples who want to stay local who could afford to buy at asking price but get blown out the water by over offers from these folk.

On the other hand if I was selling why would I say no to 20k more than asking?

It's a hard one.

Where are you?

Scotland will not be allowed to join the EU as a breakaway state because it would encourage a breakup of Spain. Catalunya already wants self government and is the wealthiest part of Spain: the south is pretty much third world agricultural outside of the tourist-appealing Moorish cities. So Spain is always going to be a hard block against Scotland rejoining as an independent state.

Scotland is not a 'breakaway' state. The Spanish constitution (set up by Franco) says that all states have to vote for and that is why the Spanish Govt did not recognise the Catalonian Referendum. It would have no problem in recognising a legal Independance Referendum in Scotland.

Before the dynamic duo crashed the housing market a few weeks back, there were a few reports in our newspapers in Northern Ireland describing an upsurge in the number of English people seeking homes in Northern Ireland, not just ex pats returning, but generally. Family homes in naice towns like Bangor were particularly sought after, one estate agent said he had 18 viewings booked for one house within 24 hours of a listing. So perhaps it is happening in Scotland too, though I thought the whole market was currently in a state of suspended animation.

Isn't Bangor wales?

MadMadMadamMim · 04/11/2022 21:12

Strange stereotype. I get the London comparison, but nothing else.

We'd like to live in Scotland. DH is from Edinburgh. We get far more for our money in the North of England where I'm from and therefore live there, sadly. Every time I've property searched in Scotland (have a vague hankering for the Western Isles) I'm utterly shocked at how damned expensive a detached house with a decent sized garden would be.

My MIL genuinely can't seem to grasp that we can't afford to live in Scotland - or at least would have a far smaller house with a lot less outdoor space in comparison to what we have in England, and I'm not prepared to lower my quality of life like that.

housemaus · 04/11/2022 21:13

CharlotteStreet · 04/11/2022 19:55

Au contraire! The couple I know who has moved up to Scotland will vote for independence in the hope that Scotland will (re)join the EU.

Same! I'd wonder if it was the same couple, but I bet there are a fair few doing the same thing.

Good. People buying second homes are the reason so many young people in rural areas are priced out of the areas they’ve grown up on.

The rural places usually have no jobs. Sit in a pretty rural area on the dole? Many of these young people are itching to get to London et al to make some money and then THEY end up raising house prices in cool 'affordable' areas in London pricing out, guess who? The people who grew up there. So no, I'm not sorry about them. It's how the world works. Seeing your other comments I don't think we'll agree on much.

I know three couples/families who have done exactly this. Rejoining the EU was a massive factor in their move. Three of them are Tory-voting remainers. Strange times.

They must be pretty stupid, Scotlands chance of joining the EU - with their new Scottish pound currency, huge debts and unsustainable living standards outside the U.K. means their chances are zero.
So either your friends are dim witted or this is made up,
Most people I know won’t even holiday in Scotland now, such is the anti English sentiment - and we are half Scottish and can’t imagine we will return to see our family. They now come to visit us, and are devastated by the racism directed at their English family. It’s not all of Scotland that feel this way, but all that can be heard is the SNP and it’s poisoning relationships as it was intended to do..

But yes, let’s just allow any predatory male claim they have gender dysphoria with no medical diagnosis and get a magical piece of paper telling everyone they’re a woman after 3 months.

Fuck that.

Justanotherlurker · 04/11/2022 21:16

i think it’s hilarious that the terfs like to paint Nicola sturgeon as a danger to women and children, I find it so scary when the snp give out free bus passes for children and free sanitary products, at a time when everyone’s feeling the pinch

I have no skin in this game, (ironically the only time I have face racism was in Scotland though, with a large pinch of anti english)

But I think you are mixing up scenarios to create a straw man, the 'terfs' argument isn't around free bus passes (which is a simplistic populistic stance to appease the easily led) most scottish parents want actual education sorted out and are getting tired of the constant anything bad is the result of the UK gov.

If you did understand the 'terfs' issue, you wouldn't be bringing up simplistic non related situations, but this is tribilisitic political discourse in 2022

Have you been to these places and spoken to these people? Trust an English person to tell a Scottish person what they think 🙄

Or the child payment that is responsible for lifting many families out of poverty. Luckily, it’s being increased and being given to more families soon. Several charities have been monitoring the impact of this payment and it makes for interesting reading.

Well the SNP only recognise boys so yes boxes won’t fix that for baby girls.

Yes, more children in deprived areas or who have been cared for by the state are achieving more qualifications than they ever have before. Isn’t that great?

Such a shame that non supporters of Nicola Sturgeon have to resort to name calling and slagging of her appearance to get their point across. Why can’t you say what you have to say without commenting on her appearance.

Yes, this. Can't abide name calling. It's a convenient alternative to actual debate.
