I work in conveyancing and I have noticed a huge upsurge in people from England trying to sell up and move to Scotland. I know they will get more for their money up there but someone today and yesterday were total pissed off the Government. I am sure it works both ways and there is an influx to England but has anyone noticed a difference - particularly people from London especially.

Anyone with kids moving to Scotland should worry about safeguarding given the the govt is the biggest risk to children now.

But yes, you get so much more for your money there.

This. Not a chance I'd move to Scotland, as beautiful as the landscape is.

JamesCordonsStolenJokes · 04/11/2022 20:50

Londoner here who dreamt of owning a holiday home in Scotland but won't be doing this now due to SNP and trans policies. You're safe from me, your government though...

XingMing · 04/11/2022 20:51

Are we sending the asylum seekers to the Highlands to make their fortunes yet? I suspect they won't want to be staying long in Knockando and Findhorn.

I can see why people are relocating to NI, the benefits of EU membership being the major one.

NI is not in the EU

Littleelffriend · 04/11/2022 20:53

Genuinely what are the safe guarding issues?

The reality is that the Tory government is the biggest risk to children. They have no concerns about the millions of children they are plunging in to poverty. This is one harm the SNP have actually reduced here. Grumble all you like about the Scottish government but at least they have done things to improve the lives of children, those with disabilities and making immigrants and asylum seekers welcome.

There’s a lot more people moving to NI, although usually one is a returner.

Plenty of good reasons to.

Until you need healthcare that is...they aren't moving here for the NHS.

NI a mixed bag - has excellent (free) grammar schools but is very heavily dependent on the public sector employment-wise. Some great value houses outside of the greater Belfast area. Fantastic large detached family homes in counties like Fermanagh and Tyrone for around £200K+ - you wouldn't get a two bed terrace in the home counties for that. Beautiful countryside, good neighbourliness and low crime rates. But the public transport network is shite, and virtually non existent outside of the cities.

Well, they’ve done well in places like Bute so I don’t see why not.

There was a very nice bakery set up by Syrian refugees on the Isle of Bute and a barbershop.
( but yes the bakery expanded to have another shop in Glasgow)

Good. People buying second homes are the reason so many young people in rural areas are priced out of the areas they’ve grown up on.

A couple of cold winters (and autumns and springs) of constant rain, dark morning and nights, then the short summers plagued by warmer rain and midges and many will head back down south.

If they are hardy enough to stay then welcome!

XingMing · 04/11/2022 20:59

Scotland will not be allowed to join the EU as a breakaway state because it would encourage a breakup of Spain. Catalunya already wants self government and is the wealthiest part of Spain: the south is pretty much third world agricultural outside of the tourist-appealing Moorish cities. So Spain is always going to be a hard block against Scotland rejoining as an independent state.

Punkypinky · 04/11/2022 20:59

I must admit a few times in the heat wave this summer I thought about moving to north north Scotland. In a very abstract way I must admit but it was still a thought.

We'll get some sort of heat wave every year from now on I'll bet. I know some people who really struggled with it, I mean properly properly hated every second of it. So I think if you're in a position to move to a place where you can live out yr days never dealing with the 40+ degree heat again AND you'll get a lovely house then you'd go for it.

The Spanish don’t have a problem with Scottish independence and haven’t for a long time.

XingMing · 04/11/2022 21:00

I would respectfully disagree.

I would respectfully disagree.

You seriously think the EU are going to knock back an oil, gas and electricity rich country back?

Harainee · 04/11/2022 21:03

CharlotteStreet · 04/11/2022 19:55

Au contraire! The couple I know who has moved up to Scotland will vote for independence in the hope that Scotland will (re)join the EU.

I know three couples/families who have done exactly this. Rejoining the EU was a massive factor in their move. Three of them are Tory-voting remainers. Strange times.

usethedata · 04/11/2022 21:05

I was confused at first about the references to safeguarding issues but have realised it's nonsense! Very misleading!

Maybe they’re exchanging one shit government for another but at least they’ll have a substantial family home with land and views instead of a pokey flat above a kebab shop on a busy A road. I can see why it’s tempting.

Ah yes we all have land and views! No A roads, kebab shops or built up areas in Scotland!

Scianel · 04/11/2022 21:06

So TERFs are avoiding Scotland? Excellent, another reason to love the place

Sorry to disappoint but there's plenty of us here.

Kissingfrogs25 · 04/11/2022 21:07

its most definitely education! The standards in Scotland are now so low that any child failing in England can move to Scotland and to top of the class and fast track their uni options
