To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

I just can't think of one large or fat person who I would consider classy and glamorous.
I can think of loads of larger women who I would consider very pretty or beautiful but not glamorous.
I am fat by the way so not trying to shake anyone, just sad that I'll never be glam!

To me, glamorous is about being a bit extra, looking fab, perhaps deliberately going for an artificial look, sparkly and so on, so anyone can be glamorous but very very few people are in real life (the red carpet aims for everyone mostly to look glamorous).

I would rather be glamorous than elegant but that's just me. I don't want to be Audrey Hepburn when I could be Sofia Loren! Of course I look like neither, I'm a middle-aged slightly overweight lady with a round middle. Things I do that make me feel glamorous is wear the odd top lower cut than most, usually have one tight thing on (so tights, tighter trousers, possibly tight top but usually something covering the middle bit). I wear the odd heel if I'm off out (not too high now they aren't so in fashion). Make-up, jewellery, sparkly things, blazers. I don't want to look stylish or elegant or discrete or boring, I would hate to look like Kate Middleton as it's not me. I would love to be described as glamorous, and can occasionally rise to the occasion, but these days it's all a bit hard work.

I think you can dip in and out of being glamorous, so Lizzo definitely is glamorous but not all the time. Sportswear is never glamorous even though it looks great.

Glamour isn't size related for the most part, only if you don't feel confident in yourself you will find it hard to be glamorous (it also attracts attention).

Alison Hammond is always glamorous. Nigella too. Queen Latifah. Mariah Carey.
I don’t think glamour is only for the slim.

Buteverythingsfine · 03/11/2022 14:33

Piers Brosnan's wife is glamorous for sure! Not just on the red carpet, but in swimsuits, holiday dresses.

Pregnancybump · 03/11/2022 14:36

I think it’s much more about shape. If you have a nice shape then you’ll look better. I have a rubbish shape and need to keep slim to look OK.

The initial list of celebs aren’t all ‘big’ but they are all rich! That helps with being glam.

Mariah Carey isn't slim?

Nigella is definitely glamorous.

This is about you and not feeling good about yourself OP, hope you find what you’re looking for.

But she's not plus size. She's quite slim, I would say.

How has nobody mentioned Sophia Vergara yet?

She is the epitome of modern glamour, to me at least. Her or going back in time a bit, the nineties supers, Evangelista especially.

Fwiw its probably more important to be beautiful in a very sensual and distinctive way to be truly glamorous. To appear decadent, expensive almost in your sensuality.

This descriptor lends itself neither to being obese nor waifish. Curves and a healthy bmi is probably the best figure on which to build a glamorous presence.

NumberTheory · 04/11/2022 03:20

In what world is Sophia Vergara fat?

In what world is Sophia Vergara fat?

The same world where Beyonce, Marilyn Monroe, Kate Winslet and Mariah Carey are, apparently.

None of them are size 20 plus either. They’re all about size 12 I expect.
I think it depends if your curvy or have a huge stomach for example. If your in proportion I think you can look good.
If obese, then no (sorry).

Melissa McCarthy is most definitely NOT a size 12.

I have seen Marilyn's white 'subway' dress in a costume exhibition. You could practically get your hands around the waist.. she was TINY!!

WTF? She is not overweight at all.

I also saw this dress at an exhibition a few years ago and agree with you. My mum and I were stunned that it was smaller than Judy Garlands gingham dress from Wizard of Oz.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/11/2022 09:20

"Glamour" models are generally busty.

Leemoe · 04/11/2022 09:22

Where exactly did I say that Sophia was fat?

I perfectly described her as having a healthy bmi and a curvy figure.
She isn't fat, nor is she slim. She has a healthy, normal, curvy figure.

Not being argumentative but her figure is in no way 'normal'! It's absolutely incredible and very, very rare!

It is very normal i relation to BMI and fat to musculature ratio.
Granted her fat distribution is clearly extremely fortunate but she is observably of a normal weight, neither fat nor slim.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/11/2022 11:12

Is "normal weight" not "slim"?

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 04/11/2022 11:15

No, she's definitely slim, she's not skinny, but she is slim.

Maybe it's a case of you seeing things differently to me or seeing things differently to me but I've never personally seen a picture of her where she isn't observably slim just with big boobs for her frame 🤷🏻‍♀️

Leemoe · 04/11/2022 11:24

ReneBumsWombats · 04/11/2022 11:12

Is "normal weight" not "slim"?

Well at the risk of descending in to arguing over semantics; no I don't think that it is.

I am a normal weight. BMI of 22. I look normal, an u remarkable size ten.
I was noticeably slim when I had a BMI of 18.7 and people would describe me as slim, my weight was something to be remarked upon and I was slim. I wore a size 6-8.

When the OP mentioned having to be slim in order to be glamorous size 6-8 is the size I imagined her referring to. Rather than a very normal size 10 or 12.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/11/2022 11:32

I'm very interested that "slim" for some people has to be below a size 10, and thinner than "normal".

Then again, on this thread we've had Kate Winslet, Marilyn Monroe, Beyonce and Mariah Carey given as examples of non-slim women.

Well the dictionary definition of slim appears to be 'gracefully slim, slender'

I'm surprised that you find it so interesting that other people may not think that this description applies to most women with a normal, average healthy bmi.

Leemoe · 04/11/2022 11:39

Apologies; 'gracefully thin, slender' is the correct definition.

In any case most normal weight women are not gracefully thin. And yes I very much would describe Beyonce et al as being of decidedly normal weight.

For the avoidance of doubt, there is nothing wrong with being of normal weight and to my mind being slim is not preferable in most instances.

I'm surprised that you're surprised. Don't think I've ever seen a normal weight person whom I wouldn't describe as slim. Possibly not skinny or thin, but if you're not overweight... I wouldn't say you had to be visibly thinner than a healthy weight to be slim.

But as before, some people think Marilyn is an example of how to be glamorous when you're big, so....

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.
