To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

I just can't think of one large or fat person who I would consider classy and glamorous.
I can think of loads of larger women who I would consider very pretty or beautiful but not glamorous.
I am fat by the way so not trying to shake anyone, just sad that I'll never be glam!

Beanie Fieldstein, (especially in the Gucci campaign) she’s gorgeous! I’m very slim and really don’t think it’s weight based, I have many scruffy thin friends and then glamorous plus sized friends…

To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

glamour

/ˈɡlamə/

noun

noun: glamour; noun: glamor

an attractive or exciting quality that makes certain people or things seem appealing.

"the glamour of Monte Carlo"

Similar:

allure

attraction

attractiveness

fascination

charm

enchantment

captivation

magic

romance

mystique

exoticism

spell

excitement

thrill

glitter

brilliance

the bright lights

the high life

glitz

pizzazz

glam

beauty or charm that is sexually attractive.

"pile hair up for evening glamour"

Similar:

beauty

allure

attractiveness

Any sort of attractiveness or appeal is going to be subjective, so this is one of those things that everyone decides for themselves. However, the definition says nothing about a person's size. It doesn't even have to refer to a person at all.

I'm slim. Definitely not glam. I wish. I tried to wear fake eyelashes on the weekend, I looked like a muppet that had been in an accident.

I know many larger women who are incredibly glamorous. To me, glamour is more about style, make up, hair and confidence.

I am overweight and am regularly told by colleagues, friends and family how glamorous I am - but some posters on here think that if you are overweight, you cannot be glamorous or even pretty 🙄

This thread is one of the most fatphobic I've ever seen on MN.

They're always allowed to stand too. Threads get deleted left, right and centre on here but anything about fat women always attracts page after page of posters desperate to tell us their dress size and how gross fat people are. Mumsnet is a cesspit when it comes to diet culture.

Can we consider the glamour of the movies back in the 'Golden Age' Rita Heyworth, Olivia de Havilland and more. Thet were all famous for projecting more than a look, they did not just stand around waiting to be admired they acted. they moved, they wore many outfits during their careers.

It isn't clear what @frostytimes had in mind when she started the conversation, but many have interpreted it as can you be beautiful if not slim. Even can you be attractive and not slim. In my humble opinion 'glamour' must have the magic to take us out of the humdrum into a make believe.
Like a good book will enable us to 'suspend our disbelief'

I wouldn’t say they were glamorous.

Nice looking but not glamorous
Glamorous is about being tall, thin, having perfect posture and being well groomed at all times without a hair out of place.

Audrey Hepburn was glamorous.

I can’t think of anyone else I would label as glamorous

🤣

Many of us cannot go there because it’s way before our time and those don’t appeal. I don’t see the glamour in those those times.

Just looked their photos of the two you mentioned, one looked very plain and I can’t see a spot of glamour.

Different strokes for different folk, I guess.

WonderingWanda · 03/11/2022 07:50

I disagree with you. I actually think curves add a bit to glamour. To me glamour is about being dressed up, evening dresses, styled hair /up does, glitzy jewellery, bright or glossy lips / smokey eye, heels. Looking feminine and sexy. I think that is more easily achieved on larger or curvier women than stick thin androgynous shapes.

Maybe you are confusing glamour with style? It might be harder to pull off some of the day to day stylish looks. I have curvy hips and a bust and some of the looks with shirts and blazers make me look a bit matrons.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 03/11/2022 07:51

I think Angel Strawbridge is super glamorous. I absolutely love her style. Could never pull it off myself though.

There was a school mum around our way and she was very plump indeed. But she totally channelled the 40s and 50s vibe and owned it. She also look pretty fabulous.

I guess it comes down to confidence. I am 2 and a half stone overweight and usually try and hide in dark colours. Id love a bit mroe confidence.

VeronicaFranklin · 03/11/2022 07:52

I think Dawn French is glamorous...

I'm overweight and often get described as glamourous...I literally just do my hair and make up every day and dress appropriately for my body shape and style.

CantSleepCountingSheep · 03/11/2022 07:55

You realise you have been conditioned to think that op.

HikingforScenery · 03/11/2022 07:58

The most glamorous person I’ve ever seen is the headteacher of a local-ish I’m governor at. She’s in her 50s, definitely not slim and and absolutely gorgeous. I’ve never seen her out of school but wonder how she dresses when she attends functions.

CrabbitBastard · 03/11/2022 08:13

There are some plus size bloggers who tell us what to wear when they dress and look awful themselves. I'm plus size and all these bloggers do is make me feel worse about it, they certainly don't make me feel 'body positive'. What is it witih these bloggers trying to emphasise their fatty-ness by wearing dresses that are clearly too small or too short for them? And some of them don't wear bras or if they do, they clearly need a better bra. It's misleading to say that body positive is about making women feel good. These bloggers make their income from emphasising I'm fat, I'm fat, I'm fat. If they looked glamourous or wore clothes that were figure flattering, the emphasis on I'm fat goes away and their income will be affected. So they turn to underwear shots. They again mislead the viewer by portraying such posts as "I can still wear nice underwear" but in reality its another way to make money by tapping into the "hey, do you like BBW" male market. Its all done very sneakily. They NEED to be fat, its not about body positive.

YABU.
Cardi B
Khloe Kardashian
Marilyn Monroe
Beyonce
Melissa McCarthy
Kate Winslet
Queen Latifah
Rebel Wilson
Off the top of my head. None of them are size 6.

Marilyn Monroe had a waist size of 27 inches .....

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 03/11/2022 08:19

What does glamorous mean? Done up with makeup etc? Don't see why that would be weight related.

I don't often meet people I'd use that word for to be honest

Ringmaster27 · 03/11/2022 08:20

Yes YABU.
I’m very petite - 5’4”ish and wear a size 6. I never look “glamorous”. My clothes tend to wear me, and I just look awkward and uncomfortable in anything other than jeans and a jumper.
A close friend of mine is on the larger side. I’d guess a size 18, maybe 20…but she wears the most fabulous clothes and just oozes confidence in whatever she wears. The other day, we met for lunch, and she was wearing a bright pink tea-dress with black tights, sparkly pink doc-marten style boots and a leather jacket and she looked fantastic! Not just because the outfit was beautiful, but because of how she carries herself. It’s not about size. I think “glamour” comes from the way a person carries themselves. And my friend carries herself bloody well!!

queenofarles · 03/11/2022 08:22

So far none of famous women given as examples represent non famous ordinary woman ,
I’d say Lizzo was sexy first, then glamorous (and very bright obviously) Lizzo is glamorous , she has a very beautiful face and always looks amazing on the red carpet , which is not hard as most of the clothes are being chosen by a stylist and are made to flatter her figure .

Plus size models like Ashley Graham and Robyn lawley clearly workout not to lose weight but to tone there bodies a bit , they both have great arms and legs plus they are tall which helps clothes look better ,

so I’d say it’s really hard to be glam when you are over weight, you still need to work hard and spend a lot of money on good quality flattering clothes to look good

jibbe · 03/11/2022 08:27

You can look glamorous if you’re a size 6 or 16 . I don’t think clothes look as good or hang as well on someone of a larger frame though especially if it’s tight

OldReliable · 03/11/2022 08:30

kittenkipping · 02/11/2022 22:09

Absolutely. I'd never heard of Ashley graham and upon googling she doesn't seem to wear more than lingerie. Not glam to me. I'm very glad this variety of opinion happens- otherwise I myself wouldn't be loveable. In the eye of the beholder truly

Probably because she's a plus size model.

OldReliable · 03/11/2022 08:31

Queen latifah is totally glamorous.

freesia86 · 03/11/2022 08:32

My boss is larger and very glamorous. She has lovely hair, great make up and her clothes always fit her perfectly which makes a huge difference.

Darbs76 · 03/11/2022 08:35

I think larger women can definitely look nice, but glamorous id say less so. Guess it depends on your definition of glamorous. I mean Kourtney K glamorous? She can look nice sometimes but wouldn’t say I’ve ever seen her looking glam

KimberleyClark · 03/11/2022 08:35

“I’m very petite - 5’4”ish and wear a size 6.*

5ft 4 is not “very petite”. It’s about the average UK height for a woman. Under 5ft 3 is petite.

Worriedddd · 03/11/2022 08:40

I actually don't like it when I'm super slim I think it's massively aging and I look haggard. I much prefer being a size 10 if I'm not glamorous I couldn't give a shit. I prefer looking healthy.
