To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

frostytimes · 02/11/2022 21:34

I just can't think of one large or fat person who I would consider classy and glamorous.
I can think of loads of larger women who I would consider very pretty or beautiful but not glamorous.
I am fat by the way so not trying to shake anyone, just sad that I'll never be glam!

Hair, make up, 'grooming', nails, toning, skincare routines, designer clothes...all a capitalist's wet dream and not shit men are talking about. (Although, there are a lot of campaigns now targeting men for make-up etc. Don't see that as liberating, see that as dragging them down.)

We need to be liberated from what we look like being tied to our worth. Wish i could lead the charge but i'm as brainwashed as the next person and am currently scheduling a nail appointment while drinking a slimfast. Hypocritical twat.

Oh so overweight people can never LOOK nice? Hmm But it's OK for you to say it because YOU are overweight? Shock

This is right up there with 'I'm not racist, I have black friends.'

Bore off @frostytimes Angry

Technically with your 'theory' she would be the black person in that scenario?

I think she's just asking if she could ever be glamorous there's no need to be mean

Oh dear. Problematic analogy there.
It would be up there with, “I’m not racist, I’m black”. Like Kanye West.

Ilovedthe70s · 03/11/2022 09:39

Montserrat Caballé was both glamorous and elegant. And absolutely charming.

Babooshka1991 · 03/11/2022 09:45

YABU glamour to me is nice clothes, nice accessories, lovely styled hair and well done makeup. It can be achieved if you’re a size 6 or 16.

twinmum2022 · 03/11/2022 09:49

CourtAppointedHairdresser · 02/11/2022 21:42

YABU.
Cardi B
Khloe Kardashian
Marilyn Monroe
Beyonce
Melissa McCarthy
Kate Winslet
Queen Latifah
Rebel Wilson
Off the top of my head. None of them are size 6.

Is this meant to be a list of fat women? Because 95% of them are most certainly not.

Kennykenkencat · 03/11/2022 03:06

I wouldn’t say they were glamorous.

Nice looking but not glamorous
Glamorous is about being tall, thin, having perfect posture and being well groomed at all times without a hair out of place.

Audrey Hepburn was glamorous.

I can’t think of anyone else I would label as glamorous

Really?

Not Sophia Loren? Gina Lollobrigida? Elizabeth Taylor?

ReneBumsWombats · 03/11/2022 10:08

"Glamorous" wouldn't exist as a concept if it applied only to one person ever.

BagOfBollocks · 03/11/2022 11:11

Strokethefurrywall · 03/11/2022 00:22

@BagOfBollocks this was the clincher for me! Beautiful face and smile she has!

She didn’t look anything like that last Saturday night on TV. She’s gained a lot more weight and while she’s pretty, she’s certainly not stunning for me.

Kennykenkencat · 03/11/2022 11:26

KimberleyClark · 03/11/2022 10:03

I will give you Sophia Loren

I never saw the appeal in Elizabeth Taylor. I thought she was decidedly average. Plus you can’t drink so much and be glamorous.
GL was always second to SL . I always silently judge those who don’t stand straight and GL always had a neck that was at an angle to her body

To be glamorous is something more than. expensive clothes, good make up and lighting. It is poise and how you conduct yourself.
Falling out of nightclubs drunk or having blazing rows in public is not glamorous
Choosing clothing that leave little to the imagination or has been chosen for its lack of material in areas doesn’t make a person glamorous

queenofarles · 03/11/2022 11:27

Audrey Hepburn was glamorous.

Audrey Hepburn was the true epitome of Truman Capotes swans , thin , understated , beautifully and expensively dressed and attractive ,
but I wouldn’t label her as Glamorous.

Elizabeth Taylor and Sofia Loren on the other hand were Glamorous , curvy and all that fur coat, jewels, big hair and makeup is what I’d call glam.

ReneBumsWombats · 03/11/2022 11:29

I never saw the appeal in Elizabeth Taylor. I thought she was decidedly average.

You must move in some exquisitely beautiful circles if you think Liz Taylor in her heyday was "average". And even if you didn't personally find her beautiful, you must be very very detached from much of humanity if you can't understand why most people did.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/11/2022 11:31

I disagree. Nigella Lawson is incredibly glamorous for example. Although not fat, I wouldn’t call her slim either.

Eve223 · 03/11/2022 11:58

To me, Claudine Collins is the epitome of glamour, and she is by no means slim.

hummerbird · 03/11/2022 12:31

@SaySomethingMan The glamour in those old movie stars was about their lives or the portrayal of characters that lifted the filmgoers into the fictional world of the film. as @Jeanjane says. Ricks Bar in Casablanca was probably a sweaty place dense with cigarette smoke, most of the clientele were pickpockets and gangsters. The place your Mother warned you against.

But for 90 minutes the audience was transported. You want to be there. Do you want to be with the Kardashians?

You know that 16 isn’t an extreme size right?
maybe 6 to 26 would have made more sense here.

queenofarles · 03/11/2022 13:05

Think the issue with Marilyn Monroe is that someone decided she was a size 16. As you can see, she was clearly nowhere near a size 16, at least by today's standards. And I doubt she was considered remotely large.

Marilyn measurements were 36,23,34 when she first started , she was tiny, I think the issue is that her weight kept fluctuating , and if rumours were true , the photos where she looked bigger were because she was pregnant .

Lochjeda · 03/11/2022 13:06

What bullshit there's LOADS of glamorous women of all shapes and sizes.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 03/11/2022 13:25

Worriedddd · 03/11/2022 08:40

I actually don't like it when I'm super slim I think it's massively aging and I look haggard. I much prefer being a size 10 if I'm not glamorous I couldn't give a shit. I prefer looking healthy.

Unless you're only 5' tall, size 10 is slim? Or are you American?

AnnieSnap · 03/11/2022 13:47

Eve223 · 03/11/2022 07:14

I am overweight and am regularly told by colleagues, friends and family how glamorous I am - but some posters on here think that if you are overweight, you cannot be glamorous or even pretty 🙄

This thread is one of the most fatphobic I've ever seen on MN.

Agreed and it’s especially disappointing when women who describe themselves as fat start this! 🤷‍♀️

Trainbear · 03/11/2022 13:53

Judith ralston from bbc Scotland weather.

Coldhardtruth · 03/11/2022 13:56

With respect, bullshit. I know some very glamorous plus sized women, and even more non-glam, slender women. What’s your definition of glamorous?
