To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

I just can't think of one large or fat person who I would consider classy and glamorous.
I can think of loads of larger women who I would consider very pretty or beautiful but not glamorous.
I am fat by the way so not trying to shake anyone, just sad that I'll never be glam!

Ok maybe not Mae West. Never less she was an amazing actress and one of my feminist icons

Harainee · 03/11/2022 00:00

Weird, I associate the word glamorous with someone like Joan Collins. It feels quite overdone and old-fashioned somehow.

It's also a world away from elegance.

And 'classy'? I always find that such an odd word. To me, it seems to conjure up the very opposite of its perceived meaning. If someone says something/someone is classy, I mentally put it/them into the 'glamourous' corner.

AngryPrincess · 03/11/2022 00:02

Meghan Trainor & Marilyn Monroe. It’s about the attitude, not the dress size.

Worriedddd · 03/11/2022 00:03

It depends I personally don't like the look of super slim . I think it looks really ageing especially on me. I think Nigella Lawson looks glam !!

Really? I always thought Adele was more glamorous when she was overweight.

I think it just goes to show how highly subjective the topic is.

I think Adele still looks great after the weight loss, but yeah I definitely agree she looked more glamorous when she was bigger. It might not have been her weight though, it may have been the type of outfits and makeup she chose to wear when she was bigger.

I think often larger ladies especially ones in the public eye feel the need to make sure they’re all dressed up compared to a size 8 woman who is comfortable getting seen in public wearing gym gear. Adele seems more casual nowadays. So actually I feel a lot of fat women are glamorous! Not sure if anyone has mentioned but Vanessa feltz can be quite glam too.

This is a horrible and provocative (deliberately so?) post @frostytimes Why post this rubbish?

Lizzo looks so gorgeous there!

AllOfThemWitches · 03/11/2022 00:06

Think the issue with Marilyn Monroe is that someone decided she was a size 16. As you can see, she was clearly nowhere near a size 16, at least by today's standards. And I doubt she was considered remotely large.

Strokethefurrywall · 03/11/2022 00:22

@BagOfBollocks this was the clincher for me! Beautiful face and smile she has!

To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

PonyPatter44 · 02/11/2022 21:37

Yes, you are unreasonable to think this. How can you re-frame your definition of glamorous to include yourself, and other women of all shapes and sizes? I'm sure you are beautiful and could look glamorous if you wanted to!

Not all women, fat or thin, are beautiful.

If you're not attractive you look in the mirror and see it.

This whole notion of 'reframing beauty standards so that every woman is beautiful' is so patronising.

StaunchMomma · 03/11/2022 00:43

Strokethefurrywall · 03/11/2022 00:22

@BagOfBollocks this was the clincher for me! Beautiful face and smile she has!

If you're honest, though, she looks better thinner, doesn't she!!

mackthepony · 03/11/2022 01:10

I agree with the op

It's difficult to look glam when you are very big. I speak as a person who has been big

LikeTearsInRain · 03/11/2022 01:10

YANBU

None of the examples people have tried to name here or post photos of are glamorous to me.

ImustLearn2Cook · 03/11/2022 01:16

@frostytimes As previously mentioned, elegance and glamorous have completely different meanings.

Definition of glamour
1 : an exciting and often illusory and romantic attractiveness

For me size has absolutely nothing to do with the above definition. Because really it is completely subjective. Who I find attractive someone else may not. I might look upon the same person that some see as glamorous and I do not see it. It is completely subjective.

elegance
/ˈɛlɪɡ(ə)ns/

the quality of being graceful and stylish in appearance or manner.

So, perhaps you meant elegant because it is difficult to move gracefully when carrying extra weight?

I’m overweight and I can definitely feel it affecting my movement.

VyeBrator · 02/11/2022 21:46

How are any of those fat??

😂😂😂😂 this made me laugh out loud 🤣

Strokethefurrywall · 03/11/2022 01:47

@StaunchMomma I don't really know her much bigger, I don't live in the UK so don't see her on TV that much. For me it was her smile that lights up her face in that photo.

That being said she's still a bigger lass and very glamorous. Sure she might not be glamorous all the time (who is?!) but I think she looks ace.

I think Ashley Graham is also a stunner, as is Queen Latifa.

BagOfBollocks · 02/11/2022 23:56

Jenasaurus · 03/11/2022 02:23

Opera Winfrey looked good at 237 pounds

To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?
Jenasaurus · 03/11/2022 02:27

To think you can only be glamorous if you are slim?

Cardi B
Khloe Kardashian
Marilyn Monroe
Beyonce
Melissa McCarthy
Kate Winslet
Queen Latifah
Rebel Wilson
Off the top of my head. None of them are size 6.

I wouldn’t say they were glamorous.

Nice looking but not glamorous
Glamorous is about being tall, thin, having perfect posture and being well groomed at all times without a hair out of place.

Audrey Hepburn was glamorous.

I can’t think of anyone else I would label as glamorous

and it years of conditioning, misogyny, racism that’s grown us into this diet cultured world.

These women are not fat. Especially cardi B. It's not a good example.

We don't even need to list famous people. Have you been walking around with your eyes closed OP? There's plenty of fat pretty people.... does fat mean your not pretty?

Same for glam I see plenty of fat people down the street and some look nice.

KimberleyClark · 03/11/2022 05:52

Glamorous is about being tall, thin, having perfect posture and being well groomed at all times without a hair out of place.

So you don’t think petite women can ever look glamorous? What about Kylie Minogue?

Redkettle · 03/11/2022 06:49

Was watching housewives ( I know i know) but was struck how scrawny rinna was compared to the curvy Erica. Erica definitely more glam and elegant with her fuller frame. I've been thin and fat. Never been glam in either scenario lol
