As a disabled person, this site makes me despair at times! Sad

OP posts:
FayeGovan · 31/10/2022 21:32

Im sorry about that, thats really poor.

Sparklingbrook · 31/10/2022 21:34

They just deleted one very quickly. I’m not sure what they can do, as they have to be reported.

Keyansier · 31/10/2022 21:34

What disablist threads? Are you reporting them?

Although it's funny you should say that, because I posted a comment on a thread about how a certain task could be difficult for people with a disability and someone said "Oh FFS" Confused

FayeGovan · 31/10/2022 21:36

I guess theres arseholes everywhere

There was a thread in Site Stuff recently about the disablism on some threads. It was hijacked by many of the same posters and deleted by HQ with no real outcome.

That was helpful. Not. Makes you wonder where such discussions can be held if even Site Stuff isn't the place.

deliverooyoutoo · 31/10/2022 21:55

I was the op of the site stuff thread.

I wish we could get something from hq some sort of action

Sparklingbrook · 31/10/2022 21:56

I hear what everyone’s saying but what action is doable? Unless turning into a fully moderated site?

paintitallover · 01/11/2022 08:09

It's not good. I think plenty of threads fall foul of the equality act. I've noticed the ageist ones too.

MissHavershamReturns · 01/11/2022 08:10

I think they need to be zapped. I’m with you op

creideamhdóchasgrá · 01/11/2022 08:17

In my experience, when reported they get a "deleted thread" response. What is the criteria for getting that moved to a "zapped this and banned the user" response?

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 01/11/2022 08:20

I agree OP I don’t usually report anything and this week I have reported at least three. I think the OPs should be immediately banned for starting threads with very obvious ablism and racism and so should posters.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 01/11/2022 08:23

I want to clarify I would like a ban on posters who post very clear ablism or racism, not posters who were just posting on a thread that other people had been ablist/racist on.

That's because you commented on a lighthearted thread and went straight for the jugular.

x2boys · 01/11/2022 09:20

I have a disabled child i think the.ones i see that i find offensive are becsuse they are posted in Aibu ,so you get people replying who have no understanding and often posting very ignorant replys wether intentional or not .

girlmom21 · 01/11/2022 08:32

This is what @Keyansier said, on a nasty, ageist thread which the OP may have found funny, but many people did not.

"How do you know they weren't disabled and find it very difficult to use them? You sound very judgmental."

It's very telling that this thread's poll has 45% of voters thinking that this OP is U for asking that disablism be stamped out on this site. And that it has comments like "what do you expect them to do? Moderate it?"

@C8H10N4O2 your post on the now deleted (fancy that) thread was excellent.

girlmom21 · 01/11/2022 09:35

@PAFMO they should permanently ban any user who is actually disablist but, like everything, there are people on here who scream disablist/racist/sexist/ageist at everything they don't like.

Trqpe · 01/11/2022 09:39

I was disappointed that the sitestuff thread talking about this got removed but offensive threads about disabilities remain 😑

JennyNotFromTheBlock · 01/11/2022 09:45

I have been on this site in various guises for many years, and I have not once, absolutely not once, seen any disablist (the actual word is ableist, btw, not disablist) threads. Not once. And I am only regularly/daily day and night. I have seen ableist posts on some threads, rarely, but those don't last long before they're deleted. So I am wondering what the OP sees as ableism and what she defines as ableist because Mumsnet is one of the very, very rare sites where ableism is neither on display nor tolerated. I say this, btw, as someone with a disability.

JennyNotFromTheBlock · 01/11/2022 09:46

*And I am only, should read as And I am on here

Samcro · 01/11/2022 09:48

@JennyNotFromTheBlock maybe you missed them. they don't always shout I am disablist. they are often more hidden so someone complains about their husband....'OH maybe he is autistic`' or bus/toilet threads are the good disablist ones.

deliverooyoutoo · 01/11/2022 09:50

I've seen loads @JennyNotFromTheBlock

Can't park in parent and child spaces.

I'm destroying the environment because wipes and heating. See also idling car.

ASD used as a stick to beat people with, including on a series of long running thread where most of the people complained about aren't even diagnosed.

One now deleted thread where I was told just to be a bit less disabled and react like an NT person would.

Questing if someone is autistic, is not ableist.

That is what I meant by define ableism. Asking if someone may possibly have ASD traits, is not the same as expressing hate or discrimination against people with ASD (like myself).

BobbinThreadbare123 · 01/11/2022 09:54

I usually spot the suggestions that anybody displaying any sort of arsehole behaviour must be autistic in some way. We're not all arseholes.

Absolutely.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/11/2022 09:56

There is outrageous stuff that can and is deleted. I use the report button for people who are clearly goady.

However there is a lot of ignorance out there and there is value in letting MNers challenge low-level points ignorant points of view because more people learn that way, and on balance we learn more and progress further than by simply deleting anything that offends us.
