To think not everything is ‘misogyny’

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/10/2022 16:11

… and that the word is massively overused on here?

I’m getting quite tired of it if I’m honest, it feels like every other conversation the ‘misogyny’ card is whipped out and anyone who disagrees has ‘internalised misogyny’ (um no I just have a different opinion).

It’s becoming the ‘BeKind’ of feminism. Overused to the point it’s getting meaningless and irritating, and just used to ‘win’ any kind of nuanced topic without any proper discussion.

AIBU? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think you need to provide an example. Everything is not misogyny but quite a lot of things are unfortunately.

Soontobe60 · 29/10/2022 16:14

Yes, please do give us an example of ‘non misogyny’.

RambamThankyouMam · 29/10/2022 16:16

Nope. Most things are misogyny.

I think if you lead a relatively safe and normal life, you don't often get to see exactly how much men hate us, and how institutional structures are stacked against us.

applesandpears33 · 29/10/2022 16:16

I have been on MN for years and don't see the term misogyny used much other than on FWR, where you'd expect it.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 29/10/2022 16:16

Yes, you need to give an example of when it’s used to describe something you think is not misogynistic.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2022 16:16

Oooo I just typed the words, 'internalised misogyny'. Are you having a go OP?

FWIW I think 'card' is overused. Disability 'card', race 'card', 'misogyny card' tend to mean, "this doesn't affect me so I can't see it".

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/10/2022 16:17

Well, I don’t think it’s misogynistic the say the abortion rate is surprisingly high given the wide choice of free and highly effective female contraceptives. I was met with ‘U R such a misogynist’

I was talking to a very well educated (top independent London school and oxford uni) who told me that women used the 'misogyny' card as an excuse. I then questioned her to find she had a nanny, a housekeeper and a driver. She also hadn't used public transport since 1997, and "what's your point" is that she has no fucking clue about the lives of the average woman. Misogyny is responsible for a huge amount of injustice but we're supposed to accept it. Women who deny this remind me of Kanye West.

heldinadream · 29/10/2022 16:18

Bollocks.
Not got time to argue it but misogyny does exist everywhere, so while of bloody course not everything is misogyny- shortage of paper bags isn't, I need a new pair of shoes isn't- damn lots of things are and tons of the issues that affect women really really are at least in part and probably large part misogyny.

PinkFizz1 · 29/10/2022 16:19

Controversial but I agree. I also think some (not all!) people use misandry too easily and dress it up as ‘feminism’. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kolarbri · 29/10/2022 16:20

Completely agree with you OP. It’s so tedious and predictable, and always used to shut down debate.

If you say that the rate is high and more provision is needed, better education and that we should look at empowering women to use less invasive methods, great.

If you judge women, blame them, assume equal access, and want to restrict abortion, misogyny.

Devil's in the detail.

I don't see how that comment is made without being a slight at women, in any context.

xPeaceX · 29/10/2022 16:20

misogyny is everywhere though.

What about the reliable male contraceptives OP? What about the fact that women are raped, pressurised, men remove condoms and their contraception fails? What about abandonment when a women finds herself pregnant? Pressure to abort from the father? You sound lacking in understanding of women's life's, judgemental and lacking in empathy. Do you think women are stupid and careless and want to abort? What are you saying?

JulesCobb · 29/10/2022 16:22

Id say using the phrase ‘the misogyny card’ was an example of misogyny. An example being only racists accuse others of ‘using the race card.’

I assume you know that it is men who get women pregnant? Men not using that wifely and often freely available contraception that doesnt contain hormones that can negatively impact the women, or that isnt as invasive as a coil fitting. And that pregnancy can be a feature of an abusive relationship.

Millsbills · 29/10/2022 16:23

YANBU

people on here seem to be confused with the definition of the term and therefore it’s overused

some on this very thread have proved that point by linking being mean about women to misogyny.

Misogyny is the hatred of women for the crime of being a woman.

Saying women who have kids with shit men and moan about having to do all the work - isn’t misogyny - that’s one relevant example as the thread is ongoing on page one of AIBU atm.

Would a slight at black people be racism?

While some of the 200,000+ abortions a year will be down to this, I’m willing to bet most are due to being careless with contraception, and if abortion wasn’t there women would be more careful in general about making sure they’re protected.

I don’t think this is ‘misogynistic’ to say, nor is it misogyny to point out female contraceptive methods are numerous, free and highly effective. Male contraceptives are not.

OP posts:
JulesCobb · 29/10/2022 16:24

Widely not wifely ffs.

also, is it just up to a women not to ‘get herself pregnant.’ The poor man cannot be expected to know or is it care that ejaculation with no condom at the wrong time equals baby? Poor helpless, uneducated men.

Millsbills · 29/10/2022 16:25

Laiste · 29/10/2022 16:23

Would a slight at black people be racism?

Do you think racism and misogyny are the same?

They have very different definitions, by the way

so a slight against a black person for being black is indeed racism

Maybe you can google both words and educate yourself before embarrassing yourself further

A relevant comparison is racism and sexism.

not misogyny

Actually id say a huge number, at least 90%, or pregnancies are a result of men ejaculating into women.
