To think not everything is ‘misogyny’

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/10/2022 16:11

… and that the word is massively overused on here?

I’m getting quite tired of it if I’m honest, it feels like every other conversation the ‘misogyny’ card is whipped out and anyone who disagrees has ‘internalised misogyny’ (um no I just have a different opinion).

It’s becoming the ‘BeKind’ of feminism. Overused to the point it’s getting meaningless and irritating, and just used to ‘win’ any kind of nuanced topic without any proper discussion.

AIBU? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I definitely believe ‘misogyny’ is responsible for a lot of things, but not everything.

That may be true but your example was a bag of bollocks.

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/10/2022 16:34

This lack of nuance and desperation to put men on the hook for everything, is actually holding us back in my opinion. It makes women look like children, unable to take responsibility for anything and instead delegate the blame for their actions to their ‘responsible adult’ (men).

I definitely believe ‘misogyny’ is responsible for a lot of things, but not everything.

Holding men accountable is holding us back?

Where did I say I want to restrict abortion? This is the sort of extrapolative hysteria that exists whenever anyone says anything that isn’t ‘MISOGYNY’. I had a termination as a teen; I’m pro choice.

Ahhh, so your abortion was out of necessity but other women's abortions are out of carelessness and stupidity. I'm with you now.

Quite.
It sounds an awful lot like those republicans who bundle their daughters to have abortions when they get pregnant as teenagers and totally out of marriage whilst campaigning to remove other women's right to choose their own reproductive healthcare.

No, mine was pretty careless. I was a teenager. Not saying that at all.

@Cuppasoupmonster ·

''I don’t think this is ‘misogynistic’ to say, nor is it misogyny to point out female contraceptive methods are numerous, free and highly effective. Male contraceptives are not.''

I can see why you are complaining about the use of the word ''misogyny''...

Because the nonsense you have just posted is indeed a pile of misogynistic rubbish.

There is such a thing as condoms: easy to use, highly effective and in fact something that anyone who is not in a committed, monogamous relationship should be using to protect themselves from STIs and unwanted pregnancy.

If a man is old enough to have sex he is also old enough to use condoms to avoid his sexual partner getting pregnant or catch an STI. It really isn't that bloody hard to understand or do.

Yes, I just read more of the posts and cringed at the example

FlorettaB · 29/10/2022 16:42

It takes two to get pregnant and yet you automatically put the sole responsibility for preventing pregnancy on women. To say there’s joint responsibility isn’t infantilising women. To put all the responsibility onto women is sexist and allows men to abdicate responsibility for any children that may result.

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/10/2022 16:44

This thread is proving my point! So much anger and just ‘misogyny’ said over and over like some kind of mantra.

Well, I don’t think it’s misogynistic the say the abortion rate is surprisingly high given the wide choice of free and highly effective female contraceptives. I was met with ‘U R such a misogynist’

Let's pick your comment apart and see if we can find any misogyny, shall we? I'll use the first Google result for "misogyny definition", which was

"dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women."

For starters, you spoke only of female contraceptives, implying that contraception was a wholly-female responsibility. Last time I looked, a male was essential for a pregnancy.

Actually, fuck it, I can't be arsed to write a well-reasoned and temperate response to you. Suffice to say misogyny is so ever-present in the world we move through that many of us fail to recognise it, because we have no experience of a non-misogynistic world. You can't recognise heat if you've never experienced cold.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/10/2022 16:44

so what - 200,000 women made a choice about their pregnancy and decided to end it. Not sure what the issue is - it's a legal, medical procedure?

Do apply the same scrutiny to things like heart bypass surgery, diabetes rates or broken legs?

misogyny

noun
1 dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.

Navigatingnewwaters · 29/10/2022 16:45

Everything about that comment drips with misogyny

It appears your point was that women are responsible for their own AND mens contraception and if they end up needing an abortion it's their own stupid fault.

There are plenty of posts on this thread that are trying to explain it to you in terms you can understand but you are oblivious, I on the other hand can not be bothered to ‘housetrain’ you.

No, and I wouldn’t restrict it. I just don’t think it’s misogynistic to generally hold the view that some women see it as a contraceptive rather than the termination of a pregnancy, and perhaps take risks they wouldn’t otherwise. I include myself in that 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think ‘training’ a woman because she holds a different opinion is patronising and something a man would usually say.

But misogyny is everywhere - like racism in a sense, once you notice it you can't 'unnotice' it.

But it’s not

actual misogyny is actually quite rare

What people on here seem to confuse is sexism with misogyny.

90% of the examples given here of misogyny is actually plane old sexism.

Ok but. Why is it misogyny? I would say the same thing if men got pregnant. Misogyny is when you hold a view about women that you wouldn’t apply to men under similar circumstances. It’s just this will never be reversed.

Men don't get pregnant.

Holding only women accountable for the need for abortions is clearly about as misogynist as you can be.
