Just Stop Oil's daily protests

Is anyone else concerned about where these daily protests will lead us?

The public are clearly getting more and more irritated by their antics. It's only a matter of time before one of the protestors are seriously injured.

I'm also worried that the government will ban certain types of protest as a result?

Berlin climate protesters condemned after death of cyclist

Appalling, but still with the rubbish of 'oh but its not their fault.
As soon as one of these wasters gets an injury from being moved it'll be all 'oh I was violently assaulted and injured, poor me poor me'..

JenniferBooth · 05/11/2022 14:20

Block the road to Glastonbury next June. See how they like it.

Tell me why it’s not the same. They’re both equally valid causes. They both caused disruption. The suffragettes were arguably more violent. Do you not think a “tantrum” about climate change is worth having? I wonder how many people in the early 20th century would label suffragettes as silly girls having a tantrum because they haven’t got their way.

You don't know much about the suffragettes, do you?
Of course people in the early 20th Century thought they were just silly women having a tantrum.
They were imprisoned, abused and violently force-fed and a large number of the population thought it served them right.

That was exactly my point…

Look at all those comments didn't see one in support of JSO and they still think people agree with them?

Not sure if Twitter filters the comments based on what they think you want to see but on mine the very top comment is in support of them:

Just Stop Oil's daily protests
JenniferBooth · 07/11/2022 19:51

Hmm Just Stop Oil have more in common with the Government than theyd like to think

GreenNewDealNow · 07/11/2022 21:06

I support their protests. Why are there so many climate deniers here?

MaxTalk · 07/11/2022 21:35

So do they have an actual workable plan and a solution that has been properly costed or are they just getting upset like a bunch of babies?

Fair play if it is the former but I fear it's the latter.

Do you think because people don't agree with their ridiculous and dangerous stunts that makes them climate change deniers?

LemonSwan · 07/11/2022 21:44

I saw a young 24 yo girl crying in a video saying her future was stolen. Honestly at this stage it’s a mass psychosis.

Sure there’s an issue with fossil fuels and climate change. Everyone with a brain cell knows that. Is the problem resolved by someone holding hostage a motorway sign. No. Obviously not. For the simple reason it’s like blackmailing someone for £1 million when they have £112.93 in the bank.

I hope that girl gets the mental health help she needs. It’s clearly distressing to her. Her future isn’t stolen and she needs someone to guide her to something productive.

sashagabadon · 07/11/2022 21:57

It does seem completely OTT. If she was my daughter I’d be very worried about who see is speaking to and the influence they have over her. It’s a kind of radicalisation imo. It is very likely She has a great future ahead of her and all this talk of no future is like she has been brainwashed.

electricdreaming · 07/11/2022 22:04

lol @ the idea of mumsnetters talking about the risk of radicalisation/brainwashing and how hysterical JSO protestors are. Have a look at some of the topics on feminism board and talk to me about radicalisation x

JenniferBooth · 07/11/2022 22:05

Her future has been stolen but not in the way she thinks

Daftasabroom · 07/11/2022 22:15

@LemonSwan
@JenniferBooth
@sashagabadon

I think your dismissive and cynical attitude reinforces the position of JSO and does nothing to counter it.

Why? What, in your mind, do you think happens when that girl is 50?

Absolutely, she will never have a respectable job after this stunt and will be a laughing stock for the rest of her life.

LemonSwan · 08/11/2022 13:07

It’s not cynical or dismissive. And it is actually relevant that electricdreaming bought up feminism.

I myself got myself into a really bad cycle of focusing on the women’s/trans rights dilemma and really thought that everything was fucked. Yeah sure it’s fucked. But me catastrophising about it and taking up all my time, energy, thinking about it all the time and affecting my mental health does absolutely nothing about it.

The world will change as it’s ready. It’s not going to change at my pace because I want it to. I did receive mental health treatment for that and the panic and stress that I put myself under did lead to a psychosis of sorts. Not hearing voices or intrusive thoughts or anything but just all encompassing it was taking over my life and I couldn’t focus on anything else.

I am not being back handed when I say I hope she gets help. I really hope she does. She looks like a bright young thing. I am sure she has a bright future ahead of her.

I am very concerned that these protests are going to lead nowhere, because of idiot politicians refusing to listen to the science and play to moron voters who don;t see what's coming. I fear that Just Stop Oil need to become much more militant, brave and extreme in their protests.

LemonSwan · 08/11/2022 13:12

How about they actually propose a solution? And then work to that goal.

Community funded wind farms? Community green energy charitable organisations who sign up whole streets for a discount? Fund electric charging docks for cars?

Whatever it is I don’t mind but saying just don’t do this, and your not putting any energy into the solution is not solving the problem. And that’s why people roll their eyes. It’s got nothing to do with the actual topic. Voters do take green quite seriously but they want solutions, not catastrophised flapping.

I think that JSO support all things that would reduce reliance on carbon, with nuclear potentially being a point of contention. HTH.

LemonSwan · 08/11/2022 13:27

Support. The majority of the country support moving towards green energy. Believe it or not - probably so do the government. We wouldn’t be dealing with Putins antics or held to ransom by the rich ME countries for a start.

As you can clearly see support isn’t good enough. Hence why they are shouting. Words are empty really when your trying to tackle a physical problem. Standing on a motorway sign so you can shout those words a little louder or wider doesn’t actually change that it’s just words.

I am saying how about they actually DO. I am sure if they focused on that a lot more people would join and with collective expertise, wisdom, funds etc we could potentially get something done.

And you can get sarky with me with HTH. Your only pissed off because you know what I am saying is true.

And if you really cared about the planet and the environmental instability/ green house gases etc you would know that oil is the tip of the iceberg. The single most productive thing we can actually do is changes to agriculture to ensure permanent pastures and continuous ground covers. The twice yearly shaving of the planet is like a bald mans head in Magaluf for a week in summer. Cooked to the point of permanent damage. Skin cancer for humans, desertification for soils.

This isn’t an area I am naive about. It’s my field.

@Daftasabroom What i meant when i said that JSO have more in common with the Government than they like to think, is that both of them stopped people from seeing dying relatives.
