Just Stop Oil's daily protests

CatsAreAlwaysCute · 27/10/2022 16:09

Is anyone else concerned about where these daily protests will lead us?

The public are clearly getting more and more irritated by their antics. It's only a matter of time before one of the protestors are seriously injured.

I'm also worried that the government will ban certain types of protest as a result?

I wonder if Just Stop Oil will be heading off to Egypt for the next COP. They could try out their tactics there, glue themselves to the pyramids maybe. Greta is not going apparently. She prefers to shout blah blah blah in Scotland as that is much safer.

Tell me why it’s not the same. They’re both equally valid causes. They both caused disruption. The suffragettes were arguably more violent. Do you not think a “tantrum” about climate change is worth having? I wonder how many people in the early 20th century would label suffragettes as silly girls having a tantrum because they haven’t got their way.

They’re not just being disruptive and annoying. These spoilt brats are killing people and leaving others with life changing issues.

They are murderers. They need to go to prison.

You are young. You are naive. You don’t have a clue.

electricdreaming and what exactly do you want people to do? You are obviously typing your replies on an electronic device - how do you justify that when the world, as you put it, is burning? To halt climate change currently we would most likely have to go back to pre-industriul revolution levels of energy usage without immediate alternative renewable sources of energy.
No phones no central heating, no cars....you get the drift.

Ordinary people can play their part, yes, but this needs a phenomenal global effort by all governments.
All they are doing is alienating people who have no real power to change things anyway (especially when even those who support their cause can't even stop using phones/laptops to post on forums!).

I agree with the pp who suggests they would be better off putting their energy into encouraging the building of nuclear power plants etc than just saying 'stop oil' which is really rather unrealistic in the immediate term.

I’m not a member of Just Stop Oil or any other type of environmental group lol. I don’t think ordinary people can do a lot - the big changes need to come from the top. Billionaires need to stop using private jets for 5 minute journeys, clothing companies need to stop pumping out garments at the volume they are, our government needs to invest heavily in renewable energy. I’m not saying we need to go back to the Stone Age. All I am saying is the calls for them to essentially be killed for protesting a valid cause is ridiculous. The ordinary person can do very little. But instead of being frustrated at protestors, maybe you should turn that frustration to those they’re protesting against.

Who have they murdered? Did the suffragettes not perform acts of terrorism?

FleecyMcFleeceFace · 27/10/2022 16:41

The campaigners are both brave and right.

NewBootsAndRanty · 27/10/2022 16:41

They've said they'd only be deterred from protesting by the threat of a death sentence.

I've always been opposed to it, but I'm reconsidering my position.

DuchessOfPort · 27/10/2022 16:42

i really enjoyed Volkswagen’s approach to the protestors who glued themselves to the floor in Germany. They turned the lights off and the heating off and wouldn’t order them food. How terribly mean!

Exactly this.

The whole 'good on them, it's getting people talking, they are just like the suffragettes!' is bullshit. People are talking about how they are acting like cunts. It detracts from the cause they are apparently fighting for.

I'm not interested in listening due to the way they are behaving, blocking ambulances and putting people's lives at risk, and it's probably an issue I would support. Someone went out and bought a big SUV due to their stunts. If they care so much why don't they come out of their posh funded by mummy and daddy uni echo chamber and go to India, China, Russia, the Middle East and pull that shit there. Oh wait...

PeppermintyPatty · 27/10/2022 16:44

The best for me was when they sprayed paint all over a Ferrari garage. Where do they think paint comes from?!

Heyahun · 27/10/2022 16:45

Meh at least they are doing something. Most people jisy pretend that climate change isn’t real and your kids are not fucked in the future.

FlowerBrooch · 27/10/2022 16:45

Thomas Malthus was right, there are just too many of us.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/10/2022 16:45

This threat is really quite shocking.
Their message is clear if you just google it- no NEW oil or gas drilling. I’m not aware that they have murdered anyone though of course willing to be corrected.
I don’t care at all about a few paintings which actually weren’t damaged anyway.
I think they have a really valid point and sometimes people do need to be extreme to get notified- like the suffragettes.

YellowTreeHouse · 27/10/2022 16:45

electricdreaming · 27/10/2022 16:40

Who have they murdered? Did the suffragettes not perform acts of terrorism?

The deaths of Lisa Webber and a GP in her 40s were caused because ambulances couldn’t get to the crash site on time because of these idiots.

There are countless more. People who have been paralysed because ambulances didn’t get to the hospital on time. Sick infants delayed to hospital.

They are murderers.

myteethwerefine · 27/10/2022 16:46

Then they are fundamentally failing by targeting the wrong people with their message and damaging their cause. I didn't say you are a member of Stop Oil but you are clearly in support of their tactics.

Your claim that you don't believe we need to go back to the stone age shows that you are completely ill informed. The planet doesn't care what you want or not. It's about facts. And the fact is until all the global leaders get on board with alternative renewable energy sources it isn't as simple as 'stop oil'.

I loved that! That’s exactly the response we should have having to these idiots.

Turn lights off. Hearing off. Lock them away with no food, water or facilities. Nobody’s fault but their own.

As far as I’m aware both XR and Just Stop Oil’s policies are to get out of the way for emergency vehicles. I’ve seen videos of this happening so does seem to be true. I’m not sure how they do this if they’ve glued themselves to the road, although I imagine they carry the solution to dissolve the glue? Protesting peacefully doesn’t really get you anywhere though - they do have to be a pain in the arse to be heard.

Sorry that was in reply to electricdreaming (new mumsnet is confusing)

CatsAreAlwaysCute · 27/10/2022 16:47

One of my issues with them is their privilege. The police pander to them because they're middle class white women. If JSO were working-class black boys, would the police be as leinient?

Bideshi · 27/10/2022 16:47

So the people who are saying there are higher priorities than climate change didn't hear Antonio Guterres talking about climate change at the UN yesterday? Despite the desperately worrying cost of living crisis, energy price increases, NHS and public services disintegration, there is no bigger crisis facing the human race at the moment.
I absolutely hate what these brats are doing (big art fanatic) and I would be incandescent with fury if I missed an appointment, for instance, because of them. But we're absolutely not doing enough to confront this desperate situation. I'm old so it won't affect me much, but when I look at my children and grandchildren my blood runs cold. God knows what they're in for over the course of their lives.
And, sorry, but renewables just aren't going to be enough. This needs radical thinking and swingeing changes.
Having said that, I actually would love to slap these smug self-important yahoos. I think they make the climate change message look as if it's the province of the over privileged middle class brat constituency and it just isn't. It affects us all, but they are promulgating resistance to the message that totally needs to be embraced by every one. I don't know how you do that.

But isn’t that what their aim is? For the government to intervene and make changes? Writing a nice letter to your MP or starting a petition doesn’t get you anywhere.

VinoDino · 27/10/2022 16:50

Protesting peacefully doesn’t really get you anywhere though - they do have to be a pain in the arse to be heard.

They aren't being heard, that's the point. No one I know have been talking about 'the cause'.

I'm now refusing to read any news article on them after reading about a woman who died due to their ambulance being delayed. I wish the media would stop reporting on them. I hope they get run over or put in jail where they belong. You can protest without risking lives. If they want to risk their own they can bash on. Innocent members of the public - no.

midgetastic · 27/10/2022 16:50

I haven't followed the protests so I am not commenting on the rights or wrongs

But
You will end up in a New Stone Age if you don't do something

We are heading that way fast and you are worried about a few protests ?

It is almost too late to avoid a real crash on your quality of life - if will make the current problems seem like a party

But hey party till the titanic sinks right ?

Any you think what they are doing is going to change anything apart from just pissing people off?

Seriously what have they achieved so far apart from annoying a majority of the public. Have they taught us any thing we did not know already, no I don't think so.

midgetastic · 27/10/2022 16:52

Thousands of people die every year from air pollution and you don't seem to be braying for justice ?

Millions will die in yen coming decades from climate change , but yet again no one really cares

But one person dies in an ambulance and you want people jailed ?

They’re literally called ‘Just Stop Oil’ surely the cause is obvious? Also is you’re talking about this report www.opendemocracy.net/en/just-stop-oil-dartford-ambulance-not-delayed-m20-accident/ the ambulance crew have said they weren’t delayed by protestors.
