Just Stop Oil's daily protests

Is anyone else concerned about where these daily protests will lead us?

The public are clearly getting more and more irritated by their antics. It's only a matter of time before one of the protestors are seriously injured.

I'm also worried that the government will ban certain types of protest as a result?

@electricdreaming We don’t need unwashed unemployed idiots to tell us this information though.

most people I know are doing their bit to help the environment.

What evidence is there that they are unwashed or unemployed? A lot of protestors are retired. I saw an interview with one who had been a doctor throughout the pandemic. But hey-ho, let’s just insult everyone we don’t agree with.

@BerriesOnTop I am not worried about it at all either

You should be.

Oh and why is that?

Climate change is happening but it’s fine and the models are way off. There’s a great NYT Magazine article on this, so don’t worry, your kids will have a wonderful future as long as the greens don’t dictate anything.

WarmWinterSun · 31/10/2022 12:38

I have no sympathy towards them blocking ambulances and other emergency services. Recently they blocked a car with a child that needed to be taken to hospital which is completely unforgivable. It is NEVER ok to put a child at risk, I don’t care what their bloody cause is. They are behaving like religious zealots and this is dangerous. It makes me incredibly angry and I would get out of my car and try to move them myself if I were blocked by them. They are selfish brats. I say this as someone with close ties to the renewables sector where progress is being made through proper work, planning, effective lobbying and investment.

i really enjoyed Volkswagen’s approach to the protestors who glued themselves to the floor in Germany. They turned the lights off and the heating off and wouldn’t order them food. How terribly mean!

Liked this too, was almost amused by their indignation that the factory wouldn't supply them with buckets to defecate and urinate in (and probably expectation the staff would empty) and food and drink!! The entitlement!

Daftasabroom · 31/10/2022 12:04

@Pixiedust1234 the protesters may be annoying but it was YOU I was calling out for making melodramatic or exaggerated claims about the emissions associated with tech and gadgetry. And to be fair you haven't actually commented on your own over exaggeration just deflected.

Melodramatic 😂

Why are you so angry with me, was that poster your mother? But do carry on, you are only making yourself look silly 😉

MichelleScarn · 31/10/2022 12:45

@electricdreaming like this one?

Where they eventually shuffle to the side, with a few still lying on the road and the ambulance has to negotiate around them?Fucking smug smirking arseholes.

So a video of them moving out the way then, within a minute. It took longer for the police vehicle to move out of the way than it did for them. The protestors sat on the other side of the road weren’t the reason they had to manoeuvre around - it was that large monstrosity of a car parked at the side that caused that.

Hellsmovie · 31/10/2022 13:09

these criminals protesters need to be dealt with. One way or another.

Maybe find where they live and spray there homes and cars with paint .

Cunts

MichelleScarn · 31/10/2022 13:25

They still blocked the road @electricdreaming and still had to be asked. And your 'gotcha' attempt about the car means sod all, as the car was only like that because of these idiots.

They probably had to be asked because they couldn’t see the ambulance - from what I can tell, as soon as they were aware they moved. It wasn’t a “gotcha” attempt at all - who needs a car of that size? Can only imagine the affect it has on the planet to run something like that. And I don’t think it was like that because of “these idiots” - it was facing the opposite way for a start and looked empty. Seemed to be parked there.

WarmWinterSun · 31/10/2022 13:55

There was a policeman telling them repeatedly that an ambulance was trying to get through. Of course they knew they were blocking an ambulance. It’s all on camera.

MichelleScarn · 31/10/2022 15:12

Ah but @WarmWinterSun they probably of course couldn't hear, just like they couldn't see the ambulance..... 🙄🙄

electricdreaming · 31/10/2022 16:54

@MichelleScarn @WarmWinterSun I don’t understand your point - as soon as the policeman says to them “there’s an ambulance, it’s your choice whether or not you move”, they very quickly get up and are moved out of the way within a minute. From the perspective of the protestors at the beginning of the video, no you couldn’t see the ambulance. This video proves my point. It shows that when they’re aware they’re blocking an ambulance’s path, they move out the way.

@BerriesOnTop peak infill is likely to come from nuclear and energy storage.

I'm not sure how offshore wind is destructive to the landscape?

Nuclear can't do peak infill, it can only provide a baseload.

Which (when you account for the time it takes for the ambulance to be spotted, and then for it to be able to squeeze past after they've shifted) will account for several minutes of delay. Did you miss where a poster said that "every second counts"? And that's where they're aware of the presence of an ambulance. What about when an ambulance is a mile away, caught in the tailbacks?

No and I appreciate that, but the argument that they block ambulances just isn’t true, and calling them “murderers” is frankly obscene. There are multiple factors that could delay an ambulance, road works, road closures, heavy traffic that has nowhere to go to get out of the way, years of Tory destruction to the NHS, the list goes on. They might cause a slight delay, but they don’t block ambulances.

MichelleScarn · 31/10/2022 20:34

None of those though @electricdreaming have purposely set out with the purpose to block roads and make peoples lives difficult though?

No, but Just Stop Oil haven’t set out to purposely block ambulances either. They have set out to make peoples lives difficult, but not specifically paramedics.

MichelleScarn · 31/10/2022 21:13

So yes they are purposely making peoples lives difficult. Still thinking arseholes who are not going to win hearts and minds. Doubt they care and they just enjoy creating chaos and upsetting people but under a self righteous banner.

Thatladdo · 31/10/2022 21:14

Someone will either snap and run right over them or they will get a good shoe-ing.
Id prefer it to be the second one but its only a matter of time.
As for the spraying paint over places, they should be painted orange and sent to the stocks

electricdreaming · 31/10/2022 12:18

Can you please link one? Or find evidence of one that doesn’t have a just stop oil video in response showing them moving out of the way? I’m very sorry to hear about your family member.

Obviously no link but as I said above I was caught up in the gridlock around Cromwell Rd last Thursday. I was around a mile from the protesters with an ambulance behind me. With roads at a standstill of course emergency vehicles are going to be caught up. Saying the protesters will move for ambulances makes no sense when they're blocking roads.

Berlin climate protesters condemned after death of cyclist

Galaktoboureko · 05/11/2022 12:14

Women wouldn't have the vote without similar protests, for instance.

Not really true.

Women already had the vote in other countries like Germany and we were seen as being a bit behind. After women's contribution to the war effort they were given the vote alongside the common man (previously only landowners and war veterans could vote).

The suffragettes blinding innocent postal workers with letter bombs and trying to kill civilians with bombs in theatres and churches wasn't really a huge factor according to a lot of historians.
