To wonder why everyone likes mcdonalds?

Walked past today. Very long queues. Maybe half term, but then they always seem to be busy.

What is the big attraction?

Consistency of menu, food quality and environment. I know that my autistic child can walk into any McDonalds and find it acceptable. It's not sensory meltdown roulette like naice independent places that might have strange textures/ seasonings to unpleasantly surprise him.

LieToMe · 27/10/2022 03:15

Good marketing. Cheap, quick, edible food with lots of salt, sugar and fat which is what many people like.

I know people have different tastes but I’ve heard people say it’s their favourite food, Stage best thing they’ve tasted, it’s delicious etc and can’t help feel they must not have tried lots of other foods. Each to their own though.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 27/10/2022 05:40

Due to food intolerances, I cannot tolerate McDonalds anymore but I did enjoy a lot of their stuff. Filet o fish, spicy chicken, the regular burgers. I just loved the aroma and texture of a regular McDonalds hamburger.

JockTamsonsBairns · 27/10/2022 06:06

I'm not a fan of McDonald's myself, but the DCs like it. We go there fairly infrequently, so they still consider it a treat rather than a regular thing.
We live in Yorkshire. PiLs live in South London, and my DM is in Scotland - so we're often on a long road trip. Stopping at a service station is when McDonald's fits the bill for us. It's cheap and fast, we know exactly what we're getting so it's easy.

I might be wrong, but the opening post has a whiff of snobbery about it?
We went with the PiLs to a double Michelin starred restaurant for their 50th wedding anniversary a couple of years back, and I can't say I particularly enjoyed the food there either. It felt complicated and 'showy'.
I'm not even a fussy eater either, but I'm a good cook myself - so, on the odd occasion I eat out, I want the food to be better than what I can make at home.

Tigertigertigertiger · 27/10/2022 06:22

Because it’s delicious

onlythreenow · 27/10/2022 06:28

Oh dear, the sanctimonious are out in force today!

NashvilleQueen · 27/10/2022 06:29

I can't wait for a festive pie. Deliciousness.

Now that sounds nice. Is it just a mince pie

NashvilleQueen · 27/10/2022 06:55

Yes and I think there was custard in it as well.

NashvilleQueen · 27/10/2022 06:57

Just googled. It does have custard 😋

balalake · 27/10/2022 07:06

Cheap (at the point of purchase, not the costs to the NHS) and often limited alternatives in an area.

I avoid myself.

Really? How is that more expensive to healthcare system than visiting a restaurant?

Did anyone here ever looked at maccies nutrition and nutrition in acceptable meals?Confused
what do you all think hey are putting in? Meth😂

Aishah231 · 27/10/2022 07:29

MSG! once you haven't had it for ages and then go back you realise how fatty, greasy and tasteless it really is.

PurplePixies · 27/10/2022 07:58

JennyNotFromTheBlock · 27/10/2022 01:42

Or, maybe people genuinely like the taste?

Saying you can't stand these places is like saying you can't stand chocolate.

I don’t like McD’s and I won’t eat Cadburys chocolate either as that tastes horribly greasy from the addition of palm oil. 🤮

These days I tend to buy Aldi or Lidl brand chocolate. The ones sold in Ireland don’t contain palm oil but I don’t know if the bars sold in the U.K. do?

Unfortunately, Brexit means that the UK’s food will become more like the mass produced crap sold in the USA with unnecessary additives, cheap ingredients and much lower standards and that will lead to an increase in obesity and gut related illnesses. ☹️

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/10/2022 08:49

I've eaten plenty of McDonald's because I worked there for three years as a student and wasn't about to turn my nose up at the free meal you got per shift, but I can't say I ever found it "delicious" or "yummy". It filled a hole, at best.

I'm not a food snob, I enjoy a good burger, and I love chips, I just don't think you get either of those at McDonald's.

Nolongera · 27/10/2022 09:00

Each to their own, there must be something in them but not for me.

Everything tastes too sweet, even the meat, and it takes forever to get served.

Give me a Gregg's any day, but even that's expensive now.

Sad fact, I was born a few yards away from the first Greggs factory, which was NOT in Newcastle as many people think.

Of course it's cheap for food that someone else is cooking for you compared to other restaurants and take out options.

No one is saying its cheaper than cooking your own food at home but compared to other on the go eat out options I can't think of anything cheaper.

For price of maccies?

BlackeyedSusan · 27/10/2022 09:36

Allergies... They were good before they had to be good.

And they taste fucking awesome

Chouetted · 27/10/2022 09:36

Their apple pie is hard to beat. Yes, it's just deep fried apple sauce in pastry, but that's why it's so good.

randomsabreuse · 27/10/2022 09:38

It's only cheap when you're definitely not going to be home. A meal is pretty similar in price to a supermarket meal deal, happy meals are cheaper.

With access to my fridge and oven I could absolutely feed the family for less but on the way back from a weekend in a hotel travelling over dinner time it is easily the least expensive meal you can get. Burger king on the motorway is about double, M&S or WH Smith's sandwiches are a similar price (or more if you want a drink as well), KFC is a bit more expensive.

It's not about comparing what one could cook at home but what can be had when not at home.

Will admit there is no way I'd get delivery, but drive thru is hard to beat, assuming the local Lidl had sold out of sushi that is...

dottiedodah · 27/10/2022 09:49

You're not comparing like with like. Of course cooking at home is cheaper. However if you are eating out then Mcdonalds is cheap when considering all available options.

And how much are you charging for the labour of making it, the power required and the cost of lighting etc in your kitchen?

McDonald's is absolutely fine for what it is - cheap, quick, convienient and whilst it's not the best quality food in the world it usually hits the spot quite nicely.
