As title really. Just wondering if, on an anonymous basis, the results here would reflect what I’m hearing around me in real life.

Would you personally like to see Boris return to being PM?

YABU - yes
YANBU - no

(There’s no bias in the choice of which is unreasonable - I just had to pick one!)

No never. He's absolutely awful.
However I think he will get back in. It won't be all bad though because the conservative party will implode even more and be less likely to get in again at the next general election.

newnamethanks · 22/10/2022 12:59

Fuck him. I hope his hair falls out. He'd never get another vote.

I would like to see Boris back. He was good at making the big decisions. I don’t think this leadership race is the right time for him

Good a that big decisions????

Only 'got Brexit done' by signing a 'protocol' that has left NI without a government. An international treaty that he now wants to tear up thus breaking international law.

Caused the death of thousands of people with his Covid policies .. by caring more about his own ego than their lives.

Missed countless COBRA meetings mostly due to being on holiday.

Lied . Constantly.
Found guilty of a criminal offence. The first PM to do so in office.

Literally the very very worst PM in history . (beats Truss on longevity but that's about it.)

What did he ACTUALLY achieve while in power last time.

You do realise that the markets will completely BOMB if he is re-elected ? His first 2 months will run along side the privilege committee taking oral evidence at the investigation into his behaviour. How ANYONE can think that is going to make for stable government is off their fucking trolley.

Selfishly I would be happier with him as PM because it will be a huge car crash and banish the Tories into oblivion.. Rishi is far too sensible. Could actually manage to convince people to vote Tory again with a 2 year run.. much more dangerous from a Labour supporter point of view.

Amen to this. Every last stupid strand.

Whizzi24 · 22/10/2022 13:04

He was deeply unpopular in polling by the end of his time, and polling also showed that the majority thought he was doing a bad job for quite some time before he resigned so looks like the Tories may be shooting themselves in the foot if they put him in charge again.

Johnson has arrived back now. Looking like an unkempt slob, with his bottom hanging out of his trousers. Apparently he was booed by other passengers on the plane.

And of course he was on holiday while Parliament was sitting, even though he is still an MP...leaving his constituents without representation, he didn't care about that. Try being a teacher and taking holiday during term time. But of course now there is something in it for him he immediately comes rushing back.

QuizzlyBear · 22/10/2022 13:08

My personal view is that a lot of this mess is due to having no credible opposition for many years.

Seriously? You think the mess that the Tories (who have been in power for twelve interminable years) have created is ACTUALLY the fault of Labour for not being a 'strong opposition'?! Are you on glue?

The opposition can only ever oppose verbally. They have zero actual power to make legislation, pass legislation or decide the future of the country. This shit show is 100% down to the Tories and they need to own that if they ever want to be a credible party again.

People have short memories he's only been gone 2 months he's still the same man that lied, decorated his flat, etc. And has yet to face questions about misleading parliament in ehich case he legally has to give up his seat.
What do other countries think of us?

Personally I think Truss got the job to make him look good and it was game playing.

The manipulative bastard has been orchestrating his return since the day he resigned and others have enabled that. Installing Truss was part of the plan. He should never have been PM and should not be permitted to stand now while he's under investigation for lying to the House.

mumsnet polls usually reflect the opposite of RL.

eg Brexit referendum, all the mumsnet predictions were that result would be Stay. Last 2 elections, Labour would definitely win.

Also I don't know anyone in RL who cares about Partygate, whether Johnson is a womaniser etc, while posters here go on and on about it.

This one is definitely the opposite of what I’m hearing in real life.

I’m absolutely livid about it. Apart from the fact he doesn’t deserve it, he won’t be able to govern in the way we need. There is an ongoing parliamentary inquiry about party gate. He will fill his cabinet with incompetent sycophants. I want to email my local Tory Mp in anger but I know she hates him too.

I, too, have thought that Boris coming back would be better to ensure we are rid of the corrupt Tory party but I fear the stupidity of the majority of the electorate as they voted Boris in originally despite his dismal track record.

If he is voted for by MPs or party members it will confirm that the Tories are a completely morally bankrupt political party - even the fact that he has not been banned from taking part goes well on the way to show that.

But they didn't oppose, they mumbled through Brexit and they nodded through covid. They refuse to set out a credible fiscal alternative to the Tory shit show - less someone nicks their working out. It took Gordon Brown to come out of a retirement home from somewhere to have a Labour voice on the energy costs. I mean, Jesus.

Exactly this. The only reason any Tory supporter with half a brain may consider wanting Boris back is because he won the 2019 election so calls for an immediate general election where almost every conservative MP would lose their seat may die down. (They won't die down though, so that's a non starter and I say that as a traditionally Conservative voter.)

The country needs some stability. Boris fucking Johnson is not it.

Ironmanrocks · 22/10/2022 13:15

Doesn't say much for the moral standards of your circle, then.

He didn't do well with Covid. There was a point, many years earlier, when the UK's plan for coping with a pandemic was held out as one of the best in the world and copied elsewhere. Then we had the financial crash and austerity, and it all dropped off the radar. The UK government was extremely slow to react to the early signs that there was a pandemic about to hit. Other countries introduced border controls and effective Track and Trace systems from the off and managed to keep their case numbers very low, which meant their economies could carry on functioning with much less disruption than we had. Ordinary life continued to a large extent, so amongst other benefits children were in school and people with health problems other than Covid were getting treatment.

Meanwhile over here Boris Johnson was not attending COBRA meetings and prioritised staying at Chequers to finish work on a book he had a deadline for. When he did finally grasp that he needed to do something his first instinct was to just let it rip and hope that natural immunity would sort it out. That would have meant the total collapse of the NHS and much of the rest of the economy, and that's before we even think about the callousness of just writing off the elderly and people with chronic health conditions as not worth saving.

Yes, we ended up with a good vaccine programme. Yes, we forked out an enormous sum on furlough payments (but did sod all to help self-employed people). Overall, though, the government let us down.

Stillnotturnedtheheatingon · 22/10/2022 13:18

No, why is he on holiday when parliament isn't in recess anyway? sums up his attitude to work.

generalh · 22/10/2022 13:19

Hell no.

CapMarvel · 22/10/2022 13:21

@DorchaAndLouis you need to start mixing with better people

OneTC · 22/10/2022 13:27

In a purely "along for the ride" capacity I would love to see him return. It would be the icing on the giant shitty cake.

Fireflygal · 22/10/2022 13:27

I don't think you understand the impact when government has a massive majority.

Protocol is to quieten down, support the government during tines of crises and war...this is what Labour had to do, until Boris was obviously not bothering about the impact of covid on people's lives.

They have been calling for an energy plan for YEARS..they said they would introduce a windfall tax, stop non dom status and tax those who can afford to pay more. They can't be specific because the Tory shitshow haven't released OFFICIAL economic forecasts. They have them in draft but refuse to release because the Tories have created such a mess.

I'm not a Labour supporter but even I have picked up some policies that make sense. I think if you are a Tory supporter you will always bash other parties, aided by the dominant right wing press.

The UK was always seen as a moderate country but that has changed due to the Tory right wingers who have taken over the conservatives.

thesurrealist · 22/10/2022 13:32

I’ll put on a tin hat and say I was a Tory member last time and voted for him. No longer a member but I’d not vote Tory if he is their PM candidate next time.

That's interesting @notdaddycool. Can I ask what has changed your mind?

Catsforeverinlove · 22/10/2022 13:34
