Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

I've started a new thread for those of us following all the action on Monday:

Because Boris is obsessed with his own image. He is incredibly vain, even for a politician. Like all vain and narcissistic people, he isn't really as thick-skinned as he seems. I think there are people he listens to, one of them is his wife who is very political herself - more Cherie Blair than Philip May.

If those people tell him it's going to be miserable and shit, because his MPs will rebel constantly and the markets will react badly if he tries to spend money doing popular things, I think he will listen. He wants to be Churchill and return vindicated and triumphant. He'll wait.

It’s a bit strange she didn’t think of all that before they returned from their luxury holiday.
he didn’t have the numbers. It’s as clear as day.

She'll be devastated.

To cheer herself up she needs to throw herself into writing a new book about a 'plucky young Scouse girl called Badine who runs away to Westminster and scales the dizzy heights of government, dazzling all around her. Then she catches the eye of a distinguished aristocratic gentleman called Noris. All the ladies love Noris but Noris only has eyes for Badine...

Although he has decided not to run for PM again, I truly hope he continues to contribute to public life at home and abroad.

Abroad would be my preference.

No. We don't want him!

🤣 maybe he could help out with some space trips then.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 24/10/2022 07:55

What have the aliens done to deserve him?

BirmaBrite · 24/10/2022 09:08

The Big beast Cabinet jobs are rarely given on any actual merit are they ? Do the teams who support them/provide the expertise remain in place, even if the person at the top changes or do they all bring in new people ?

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 09:09

@BirmaBrite yes the civil servants usually remain in place.

BirmaBrite · 24/10/2022 09:10

By person at the top, I don't mean PM, I mean positions like Chancellor or Home secretary.

BirmaBrite · 24/10/2022 09:14

Thanks @CaveMum , I thought that was probably the case. I wonder how much power these top jobs actually wield or is it more of a 'Yes, Minister' scenario ?

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 09:29

@BirmaBrite I suspect Yes Minister got very close to the truth of it! The fact is you can’t just suddenly take over a department (say Education) and be across the whole portfolio. You need people who have been handling all the ins and outs for years to keep you briefed and up to date. To all intents and purposes the Ministers are figureheads - they steer the ship in a vague direction with regards to policy and heading up meetings, etc but the nitty gritty is handled by the civil servants, and a good team will keep their Minister on the path they have chosen even if it goes against their personal views.

Kwarteng sacked Tom Scholar. Whoever the chancellor is would be well advised to invite him back.

Croque · 24/10/2022 10:09

That is why the civil service needs meaningful reform.

I disagree. It’s the only way of retaining sanity. We need some people who know what they’re doing.

The Civil Service does need reforming. Or parts of it anyway.

The recruitment process is massively skewed to those in the know/ with help as it has to be answered in such a specific way.

That there are internal jobs that only people who are already in the CS can apply for.

That the pay is so poor. And the pay structure is weird.

I hope that those actually helping make policy might be better than those I have come across. I suspect so are but most aren't.

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 10:45

It's a miracle that there is anyone left in the Civil Service. The Tories cannot decide whether they just use it to implement policy or engage in total dependence by asking "what do we do" as they did with Brexit.

If it was the first, then you ignore all the use of addressing risk and refining, which leads to Truss's mini budget mess and many other policy messes.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/10/2022 12:30

So the ERG can't agree on a candidate to support. Unsurprising I suppose with that rabble.

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 12:31

We’re all over on the 4th thread @MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake
