Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Of course by saying “I believe I am best placed to bring victory in 2024” Johnson is sowing Trump-like seeds in members’ heads even as he graciously concedes.

Spoiler: Boris Johnson will NOT come back as The Doctor.

He really is some unholy concoction of Trump and Billy Bunter.

Bet Carrie’s fuming about the holiday. Never mind, I’m sure there was another one planned for next month.

So tomorrow we'll probably get Sunak. We've no idea really what he plans to do and he's pretty much just been given the biggest job in the UK without do much as even an interview. He'd better not fck it up!

Given today's news, it's clear that we should turn to @RishiSunak to become our next Prime Minister. Rishi is immensely talented, will command a strong majority in the parliamentary Conservative Party, and will have my full support & loyalty

Mordant could get 100 yet in an 'anyone but Sunak' situation...

Boris is quite obviously trying to have the last word by claiming 102 nominations

I honestly think he meant to say 102 children rather than 102 nominations. With so much going on in his life, it's no wonder that he becomes so easily confused about the truth.

Is anyone really that surprised after 48 hours of going 'I've got the votes' and stuff about the Select Committee findings....?

She could @RedToothBrush but I'm not sure she will... let's see tomorrow, an exciting day for those interested-political nerds- like us tomorrow! Grin

I'm sure it's been said already, but what if BJ support drifts to Mordaunt, can it?
So both S and M have more than 100 votes. There is a possibility if that happens that membership will vote Mordaunt over Sunak.

But maybe it's too late now, I don't know if MPs can move support from one to another if they declare. Someone might know. Sorry for my ignorance of these matters.

Newscast have put out a special episode this evening (normally only episodes Monday-Friday), but it’s already out of date!

TokyoSushi · 23/10/2022 21:40

You're all right, the Johnson support could go to Mordaunt, but I just have a feeling we're going to end up with Sunak pretty quickly now...

Let's see...

stuckdownahole · 23/10/2022 21:40

Unlike others, I believe him when he said there were over 100 nominations. The problem is that with the figure quoted in the press statement of 102, plus himself, that leaves 256 Tory MPs who didn't want him, plus the ones whose support was based on their own personal advancement.

There are only about 20 Cabinet members but a lot of non-Cabinet ministers, junior ministers, and PPS jobs. He would need to make over 150 appointments. That would have been hard with only 100 MPs on his team. He could have been magnanimous and reached out to Sunak supporters but that would open the door to another mass resignation event like the one which forced him to resign.

Teaming up his (alleged) 102 with Penny Mordaunt's small band of followers might have just about made it feasible but she knocked him back in the hope that he wouldn't stand, many of his supporters will switch to her, and she will cross the 100 threshold. I think she's as mad as Liz Truss, personally.

hesbeingabitofadick · 23/10/2022 21:41

@CaveMum What's happened on the betting site you look at please?

I didn't think he was very good on Question Time a few weeks ago to be honest...

And the pound is already trading higher on the news.

Given everything we know about him, and the knowledge that he probably would have won if he’d made the ballot, there’s no way in hell he’d have been humble enough forgo another ride on the rodeo.
