Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

I voted for Boris last time round, but I'm no longer a party member. He got Brexit done, whatever you think of it, but Macron was ready to have a summit with Truss, we need a fresh page who can build a new relationship with neighbours and we don't need a PM that might be suspended for sleaze soon. Much better he stays out of the way. I hoped for Mourdant or Kemi in the summer, frankly given where we are now I don't think Kemi has enough experience and maybe Sunak is a better bet. But Sunak or Mourdant would both be grown up choices, maybe Sunak would be better economically and Mourdant campaigning next time. The Tories deserve to loose, but I'd like a 50-100 seat majority for Labour so there is some accountability.

Right-wing blog Guido Fawkes has been accused by a tory MP of just making things up by adding his name to their johnson supporters list when he 'did no such thing'.

Obviously the plan is to make it look like johnson has much more support early on than he has in order for others to fold.

Wakemeuuuup · 21/10/2022 11:05

I can't believe that even the tories would be stupid enough to put Johnson back in. At this stage nothing would surprise me though. We really need a general election

newnamethanks · 21/10/2022 11:06

The return of the un-housetrained Labrador. I hoped he was shut out for good, but no, there he is, bounding around making everyone smile. Don't let him in, Tories, he'll spaff all over you, just like before, you masochists.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 11:07

@SleeplessInEngland - oh Johnson's people lie like they breathe. One of the problems with the whole group. They do a good job puffing him up.

They puffed up Truss too. If I were a Tory MP I would recall that and the amount of utter crap that Johnson's people claimed they would get. They didn't get it.

If you discount the anonymous noms, Johnson is still on 36 to Mordaunt's 18. Sunak is on 52.

With the anonymous
Sunak 53
Johnson 52
Mordaunt 19

If you haven't been able to rustle up 19 to get in the game by this point, you were never in the game to begin with given the min 100 threshold.

It does not matter if Guido has bluffed support for Johnson or not. He still has enough names to be an issue for any other possible candidates to be in the game at this point. If they were unable to motivate to keep up with Mordaunt they don't have the support within the party.

Its that simple.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/10/2022 11:11

I saw him referred to yesterday by a Labour politician as a 'honking pudding'. Perfect description.

I suspected as much. There’s also always been a lot of lying by Tory MPs during leadership campaigns.

We’ll only know on Monday when the nominations are read out what the actual numbers are!

I’m hoping BoJo won’t be in the list of candidates personally, he’s a liar and as such shouldn’t be anywhere near number 10. But nothing would surprise me, frankly.

You're preaching to the choir. I just enjoy seeing Guido's ham-fisted stats cooking publicly exposed every so often.

TheHateIsNotGood · 21/10/2022 11:14

The most enjoyable part of this is hearing all the desciptions on TV/Radio of the current situation. By 9:01 this am I heard:

"The Tories are treating the role of Government as an AirBnb"

"Putting lipstick on the pig"

On bringing back Boris,

"He's spent 45 days on the naughty step"
"How can anyone take seriously a man whose trousers appear to be arguing with his shoes"

That's interesting - I was just looking at the spreadsheet.

I cannot understand why, if he remains under investigation, Johnson is even permitted to stand.

Thanks for new thread.

Booklover3 · 21/10/2022 11:23

it will be interesting to see what happens!

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 11:24

I see the first thing that Johnson has done is told Rishi Sunak that they should get back together and BoJo will be PM and Sunak chancellor.

Johnson does know his own faults. But Sunak would have to be stupid to accept this offer. He won't

purplethings · 21/10/2022 11:24

All this bullshit distraction whilst the country goes to the dogs and our civil rights are stripped away. We need a general election.

Does the comment about Guido fixing it come from Braverman by any chance? That way she dodges the smear of being an unknown looney candidate that tory MPs are saying between themselves that they are desperate to avoid?

Its funny. Supporter of right wing tory MP so out of touch with their own party that they were delusional to think they had a chance. Thank god they aren't going to be PM is all I can think!

CaveMum · 21/10/2022 11:30

Ben Wallace due to make a statement imminently. I suspect he will formally rule himself out, but these days who knows!

Or he could throw his weight behind someone which would be interesting and make it harder for their rival.

DrManhattan · 21/10/2022 11:38

I cannot believe he is even an option. I know people have short memories but he's only been gone a few months! What he did hasn't changed. What a horrible message to send out if he gets in

AutumnCrow · 21/10/2022 11:56

So our next PM could be chosen by a list of names, many of them fake, many of whom live abroad, that no-one has checked?

That's like the sort of incompetent, useless 'consultations' my local council runs whereby it mysteriously gets the result that 5,000 people in a neighbourhood of a few streets apparently want a lap-dancing club there.

I'm hoping that Graham Brady gets this whittled down to one candidate by Monday night and that Ben Wallace helps with that process by publicly supporting Rishi Sunak today. This cannot go to 'the members'.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/10/2022 12:01

So our next PM could be chosen by a list of names, many of them fake, many of whom live abroad, that no-one has checked?

It's farcical. Two PMs in succession selected by God knows who.

Gimme a general fucking election.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/10/2022 12:04

So the conservative parties forerunners are two men who received fixed penalty notices for breaking the law, one that they were instrumental in introducing.
Men who both held a green card/ American citizenship while serving as an MP.
Men who between them blew several billion by failing to sign off insurance and failed to support a vast amount of the population financially throughout covid while making their mates millionaires through dodgy contracts.

If this is really the best they have then we need a general election immediately before they fuck it up again even more than Truss managed.

boys3 · 21/10/2022 12:06

By-election coming up for the City of Chester seat. Don’t think any date yet confirmed.

Labour seat won with 49.6% of vote last time round. Tories second with 38.3%. Lib Dems not a factor a long way distant in third with 6.8%. Turnout a respectable 72%.

so a straight Labour v con seat that Labour should look to win big on. The Lab vote in 2017 was 56.8%, so they would want to at least match if not sail past that

back in 2015 election it was a Labour gain with a majority of just 93.

yup

and Johnson is also under investigation by the Privileges Committee for potentially misleading the House. Apparently with evidence so damning it would lead to a Commons suspension...

totally normal country.
