Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Hi My Name is Nadhim.
I once backed Boris Johnson and thats when my life started to go down hill...

I didn't think he was very good on Question Time a few weeks ago to be honest...

So what was it exactly was it about the only realistic contender left in the race that attracted you to back him for Prime Minister?

Twitter is ON FIRE tonight

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/10/2022 21:47

Nadhim 'Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.' Zahawi.

Dweebie · 23/10/2022 21:47

Really hope the Johnson posse don't all get behind Mordaunt now. She has no more proven track record than Truss did (also find her unbearably smug)

And the pound is already trading higher on the news.

Tg for that. It’s what we need atm above pretty much all else

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 21:48

Although amusing, this is an outcome that must leave everyone a bit frustrated. His culty supporters know he tried and failed. And people who can’t stand him have to acknowledge that this wasn’t the necessary hammer blow, and that at some point he’ll be back. Again.

Those FIVE Zahawi u-turns in full:

Serving Boris
“He’s got to go”
Chancellor, yes please
Letter: Actually you should resign
I’m backing Boris
We must support Rishi

bahahhahahahahaaahaaa

First Rule of Boris: He lies
Second Rule of Boris: If the first lie doesn't work, lie some more

Is anyone really that surprised after 48 hours of going 'I've got the votes' and stuff about the Select Committee findings....?

Kissing where are you?

Unlike others, I believe him when he said there were over 100 nominations. The problem is that with the figure quoted in the press statement of 102, plus himself, that leaves 256 Tory MPs who didn't want him, plus the ones whose support was based on their own personal advancement.

There are only about 20 Cabinet members but a lot of non-Cabinet ministers, junior ministers, and PPS jobs. He would need to make over 150 appointments. That would have been hard with only 100 MPs on his team. He could have been magnanimous and reached out to Sunak supporters but that would open the door to another mass resignation event like the one which forced him to resign.

Teaming up his (alleged) 102 with Penny Mordaunt's small band of followers might have just about made it feasible but she knocked him back in the hope that he wouldn't stand, many of his supporters will switch to her, and she will cross the 100 threshold. I think she's as mad as Liz Truss, personally.

There’s no doubt that this is still going to be a very bumpy ride for us all. Rishi is just the best of a bad bunch. He’s a sticking plaster on the wound which is very far from healing. The Conservative party is deeply fractured and this their best attempt to try and hold it together and it remains to be seen if they prove sucessful. I still think there’ll be a GE in the new year.

I can't see it happening.

RedToothBrush · 23/10/2022 21:53

Rishi is just the best of a bad bunch.

Isn't that the truth? And he'll have an unpleasant sting in the tail. But the markets seem to be be stablising. And I think thats bigger than any of the personalities left.

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 21:53

The telegraph has deleted that Zahawi piece, which is pretty fucking shoddy for a ‘paper of record’.

CaveMum · 23/10/2022 21:54

@hesbeingabitofadick pretty much a nailed on certainty!

On a quick scan, only 5 of Johnson's named backers supported Penny Mordaunt in the last leadership race. Doesn't bode well for her

Trudy Harrison
Antony Higginbotham
Jill Mortimer
Bob Stewart
Sarah Atherton

Why? Why would you believe him about ANYTHING?

Markets obviously right to see Johnson implosion as v positive for UK assets. But worth noting that ERG members have been openly threatening Rishi Sunak today over NI protocol. Britain not out of the woods yet...

BlessMyCottonSocks · 23/10/2022 21:59

But the markets seem to be be stablising.

The markets need certainty, as we’ve seen. Even if the news is bad, very bad, they can price it in and try to manage the outcome. It’s volatility, uncertainty and a lack of control that throws them as they can’t anticipate, project and therefore manage likely outcomes.

Interesting they've still got Boris there (even at astronomical odds) I guess that's just incase the lying shit changes his mind overnight. 🤯🤣

Hopefully whoever is the next occupant in Downing Street will put the ERG back in its box and slam the lid very hard.

The bet is next PERMANENT leader, it won't pay out till 1 Jan 2023 as anyone that doesn't last till then is regarded as a temporary leader (by the betting companies anyway). Hence why still poss to bet for the buffoon.

They’re like Trump supporters but without the violence.

Also I was watching Doc Martin the other night and realised who Nadine Dorries reminded me of: Mrs Tishell. I bet she has a shrine that she’s sobbing in front of right now.
