Truss has resigned, it is undemocratic to have another unelected Prime Minister.

AIBU to say We need a general election now?

Agree!

christmas2022 · 20/10/2022 13:48

So did the lettuce outlive her?

Motnight · 20/10/2022 13:48

Unfortunately I don't think that this government cares about democracy.

VelvetSwimmingCrab · 20/10/2022 13:49

Completely agree!

BellaBella38 · 20/10/2022 13:49

#GeneralElection

fallinover · 20/10/2022 13:50

Yup

Hand the power of the vote to the public. Let's get a strong and stable government.

We so badly need this.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 20/10/2022 13:52

Yes. If the Tories try to cling on to power now they're just going to piss even more people off. The next PM needs to table a GE. It's in the best interests of the country.

This lot have been playing fast and loose with people's livelihoods, treating the economy like it's a jolly game. It's despicable. They cannot legitimately claim to be the natural party of government any more.

"I'm a fighter not a quitter"

You couldn't write it.

Sleepdeprived42long · 20/10/2022 13:52

Agree but the problem is those in power don’t like relinquishing said power and would effectively have to vote themselves out a job (via no confidence vote) for a GE to be held.

As the saying goes-Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Era · 20/10/2022 13:54

Won’t happen. You elect a party not a person

But the context is greater than that and this cannot be swept aside. The mandate on which Johnson and his administration were elected in 2019 will now be two leaders removed. The optics are terrible. And the dicking around with the economy that has gone on has undermined any shreds of trust that remained in ability of the current crop of Conservative MPs to form a government. And none of it was on the manifesto that Johnson was elected on in 2019.

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/10/2022 13:57

Demand away but it won't happen because we have a parliamentary democracy and not presidency so an election is not required. It's not part of the set up.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 20/10/2022 13:58

Unless you have serious concerns about the MP you voted for, a GE is not the democratic process. A new leader is.

Livetoplay · 20/10/2022 13:58

We’ll need to shout it from the rooftops. They won’t want one, they’ll very very likely lose.

wombat1a · 20/10/2022 13:59

Not going to happen, for it to happen you need Tory MPs to vote for it which is essentially for many a vote for their personal unemployment.

zoemelb · 20/10/2022 13:59

General election and then what?

IhateHermioneGranger · 20/10/2022 13:59

Did you complain when Brown became leader or is that okay because it was Labour?

Livetoplay · 20/10/2022 14:00

‘Unless you have serious concerns about the MP you voted for, a GE is not the democratic process. A new leader is.’

er, we have serious concerns about the bunch of useless twats in government, so we need a GE before they destroy the rest of the economy.

tiggergoesbounce · 20/10/2022 14:00

Agree but won't happen sadly.

fallinover · 20/10/2022 14:00

Era · 20/10/2022 13:54

Actually you elect a person not a party.
But you elect your local MP.

But parliament needs to be able to form a government and currently it seems unable to do so.

That is usually when a GE is held.

Spicycurry · 20/10/2022 14:02

Those who want the Tories out, will want a GE.

It will be interesting to see who is in next.

2tired2bewitty · 20/10/2022 14:03

You won’t get one this side of Christmas, and there’s a World Cup which will distract people too. I reckon they’ll stagger through the winter and then call a GE in the spring.

Clavinova · 20/10/2022 14:04

How unusual is it to have a Prime Minister without an election?

Far from being unusual, it’s actually the norm for Prime Ministers to enter office outside of a general election...
