General Election Now

Truss has resigned, it is undemocratic to have another unelected Prime Minister.

AIBU to say We need a general election now?

OP posts:

I do agree @MrsRobinsonsHandprints Sadly, as long as the Conservatives stick to the manifesto laid out when they won fair and square in 2019, there won't be a general election. And no-one can demand one. Because it's about the party and their manifesto, not the leader.

Liz Truss was starting to veer from the manifesto, but she has gone now, and the people left behind are steering it back. So I wouldn't expect a general election any time soon.

I really think there should be a general election SOON yes, but it won't happen. Next one will be mid 2024 (sadly.)

Dotjones · 20/10/2022 15:29

No chance of an election. Why would a leader of a governing party swap two years of a big majority for total wipeout?

It's very easy for the opposition to cry that there needs to be an election, we can't have an unelected PM and so on. But I'll be interested to see whether Sir Kier makes a binding commitment to introduce a law that says an election must be called if the PM changes during the course of a Parliament. I imagine not, because if Labour get into power, such a law wouldn't suit them.

CaptainBarbosa · 20/10/2022 15:32

We can't have a GE right now, the ship needs to be stabilised before you bring on a new Captain.

They can have 18months to do this with a GE in 2024.

Right now stability is needed not a rush to the ballot box driven by anger. Let the dust settle.

DullAndOvercast · 20/10/2022 15:37

Wonder if Truss will make the 60 days in office needed for lifetime pension of £115000.

She manged 45 days and will stay for a week long leadership election - there hoping to have new leader in by 28 October 3 days before some big scheduled fiscal event on 31.

Though they haven't ruled out the Tory Party having some sort of say so how that works with 1 week deadline not sure - I assume they think they'll get one candidate and avoid the need to have Party members actually vote.

So on that timetable she'll have 52/53 days at end of her office so won't hit 60.

goinback · 20/10/2022 15:45

There won't be a "general election now" as Turkeys won't vote for Christmas, does that fit better for you?

Era · 20/10/2022 15:53

FistFullOfRegrets · 20/10/2022 15:24

@goinback

try reading at least the OP.

She remains in place until a new person is confirmed. She’s had 45 days so far and they said an election within the week so hopefully not

CranfordScones · 20/10/2022 16:07

There's nothing unconstitutional about a change of prime minister. You voted for your MP, and you still have your MP unless there's been a by-election. And your MP was elected for a full term of office.

Brown and Callaghan were both 'unelected' when they took office.

The PM is appointed by the King, as a Member who can carry the confidence of the House of Commons. That's how things are determined.

worriedatthistime · 20/10/2022 16:25

You don't choose a prime minister just a party in reality

worriedatthistime · 20/10/2022 16:26

You need to understand how it works and some do not
Besides what are any opposition policies are we aware ?

worriedatthistime · 20/10/2022 16:29

Anyone who thinks a GE won't hit the pound at this time and destabilise us more

TimBoothseyes · 20/10/2022 16:36

I think that if there is no chance of a GE then those Tories who are unhappy with the party (and there is a fair few of them by all accounts), should cross the floor. This would, hopefully, put the Tories in a position where they would have to rely on support from other parties in order to pass any legislation. Perhaps they will then start putting the country first rather than their own interests.

Brown oversaw the great financial crash and bailed out the banks at a huge cost. Lizzie's contribution to financial carnage is nothing compared to brown's.

Wasn't the banking crisis 2008 tracable back to deregulation of the markets carried out by Thatcher and Reagan? So, the Tories.

I thought the 2008 crash was the result of sun prime mortgages in the USA.

Brown tried to stabilise the market.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 20/10/2022 17:01

Now now, don't go remembering that the USA caused it and especially don't remember who paid who reparations to who for sub prime lending!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/10/2022 17:07

IhateHermioneGranger · 20/10/2022 13:59

Did you complain when Brown became leader or is that okay because it was Labour?

Er yes, an awful lot of people did

HRTQueen · 20/10/2022 17:11

A GE be is not going to be happening anytime soon the Tories are not going to give up their seats so willingly

Labour just need to concentrate on their plans when they get into office and get the message across. The Tories are doing their own digging the public are well aware of this

two years is a long time the Tories will bounce back to a degree voters a fickle and can be forgetful

im sure I’m not the no only one who was deeply disappointed with Labour over Iraq but still continued to vote for them

LeMoo · 20/10/2022 17:54

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/10/2022 17:07

Oh yes, sooo many complaints! The only thing with that is it was public knowledge before the election that Blair would hand over to Brown and everyone knew that in voting Labour they were voting for both. Didn't stop everyone hating the switch though.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/10/2022 18:04

Given the boundary commission changes that are due to happen next year I can't see the Tories calling an election before that.

Ideatcakeforbreakfast · 20/10/2022 18:10

I was saying this earlier to my partner! Tories have had their time and messed up time and time again. I don't think there's anyone in that party that can be trusted. Then again if people start saying about voting for your MP determines the party not the prime minister etc- I definitely did not vote a Tory MP and we don't have a Tory MP for my constituency.

SuspiciousHedgehog · 21/10/2022 06:26

Bollocks and you know it. Had Labour messed up this badly you would be screaming for a GE. No way will a unity candidate be found, and without, parliament cannot function.
Bloody tory lies!

SuspiciousHedgehog · 21/10/2022 06:31

Most tories are unreliable because they are liars
Some old tories will paint a picture of Labour Misery before you were born.
You are simply stupid if you believe it

Yes!

Skyellaskerry · 21/10/2022 09:42

Sorry I can’t seem to paste the link but there’s a petition to hold a GE within 100 days of the new leader. It’s on the petitions.parliament site. This isn’t the same one that has already been discussed in parliament.

Cornettoninja · 21/10/2022 16:00

This one @Skyellaskerry?
