Truss has resigned, it is undemocratic to have another unelected Prime Minister.

AIBU to say We need a general election now?

Brown didn't quit after six weeks and decimating the economy within that time

When Gordon Brown entered office as PM the pound was hovering just below $2 - when he left office it was just under $1.50.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 20/10/2022 14:19

Ooh! That's interesting.

It's actually more common than not. Out of the 28 changes in post only 11 have occurred after a GE and few had a GE called.

"The remaining 17 changeovers happened outside of elections. Of those 17, three were followed by an election called within 50 days of the new Prime Minister taking office."

Skyellaskerry · 20/10/2022 14:19

@antelopevalley and I don’t recall Gordon Brown changing what Blair was leading in the way Truss and co were.

FistFullOfRegrets · 20/10/2022 14:20

A GE is NOT in the best interest of the country.

People shouting for one need to stop shooting from the hip & actually think about it!

We can't afford to be in limbo for weeks & weeks.

No party is going to go in and be able to stop the Ukraine attack overnight.

labour doesn't have any costed policies. (Any policies if we're honest)

Conservatives might be a cluster fuck, but a GE & Labour would be an even bigger clusterfuck

Advocat20 · 20/10/2022 14:13

Time for Boris to rise from the ashes. He’s the only one who can save the Tory party now.

How very depressing.

antelopevalley · 20/10/2022 14:22

@FistFullOfRegrets It isn't about the Labour or Conservative party. It is about democracy.
We are getting a second Prime Minister, this one chosen just by MPs.

Blossomtoes · 20/10/2022 14:22

It’s exactly that simple. The standard notice is six weeks. It’s simplicity itself to do it within that timescale. And has been achieved many times.

DoubleDinnurs · 20/10/2022 14:22

IhateHermioneGranger · 20/10/2022 13:59

Did you complain when Brown became leader or is that okay because it was Labour?

I think this is different. The party is disintegrating before our eyes and has been for ages. We have people in the cabinet who are incompetent and changing roles every five minutes and it shows. A ton of resignations in the last year, sackings through misconduct, bullying allegations, law breaking, articles in papers about cocaine use. Not to mention how disconnected the party is with the average voter. The culture is snarky and arrogant towards voters. How much of that happened under Labour? I mean I'm sure there was some, but not to this extent. It's embarrassing.

I didn't like Labour when they came to the end of their term (was heavily opposed to Iraq war and worried about the economy) but this is far, far worse as I honestly think they are destroying this country on purpose and are a liability.

Glitterkitten24 · 20/10/2022 14:23

Agree!

Kendodd · 20/10/2022 14:23

Actually I hope we don't have a GE for another two years. The worse is yet to come because of tory policy and another party can't immediately turn it around, the damage is too big. If Labour take over now, much of the pain the public will feel will be blamed on Labour, not the Tories. And the voters will believe the Daily Mail and all when they said that. The tories and their voters need to 100% own the suffering they will cause and not get away with trying to blame everyone and everything else, as they always do.

user1471505494 · 20/10/2022 14:24

In this country we do not vote for a particular Prime Minister. On our ballet sheets are the names of people we can choose from to be be our representative for our constituency

Interesting point. Let the shit show continue.

BeyondsEnergyObsession · 20/10/2022 14:25

@FistFullOfRegrets this being the main benefit of my plan to instate a Total monarch - gives all parties chance to sort themselves out rather than vote tories/not the tories. Can also sort out FPTP at the same time!

(I am very much a republican btw, but it has actually come to me considering this a better option)

bobtheveryoldBuilder · 20/10/2022 14:08

someone Should call a general strike.

obv the tories have fucked us all so bad that it would be tricky for people to attend.

they have destroyed this country. Lol at comment about Brown. Yeah coz the situ is so similar.

nhs broken
brexit cutting growth and travel options for our children
schools without funding.
no green policies that will make any difference
Sewage on the beaches
town centres decimated
austerity to blame for 330 k excess deaths.
given our financial services away to Madrid and Frankfurt (I know, I work there).
no one can afford to buy a house on regular wages
childcare costs
decriminalisation of rape and sexual assault
falling growth
10 % inflation

anything positive they have achieved?
ok I will let you have Covid vaccines tho that was the NHS.
……..

Rich people got richer. But only the really rich.

those Tory voters must be so very proud

This

LeMoo · 20/10/2022 14:28

Absolutely we need one.

Mascia · 20/10/2022 14:31

I agree.

Yiayoula · 20/10/2022 14:32

Please, not Boris……
Please
Please

funnelfanjo · 20/10/2022 14:36

I’m hoping the old grandees of the party (Major, Bottomley, Hezza etc) get together and have a look across all the MPs and see which are the sensible, sane candidates who have had nothing to do with the cabinet shit show of the past few years. Someone like Tobias Elwood?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/10/2022 14:41

The Tories have a majority why would they throw that away and hold an election now.

Completely agree with this. I'd love to get them out but all the lies and blame that'll come with it... I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

Anniefrenchfry · 20/10/2022 14:43

You can say it all you want, millions may agree, but there will absolutely not be a ge.

and no prime minister is elected, it’s the party. Hence why this sort of shit show can happen.

Blossomtoes · 20/10/2022 14:30

But in two years it will likely be fixed and the population will love the party who fixed it,,

They have caused plenty of suffering over the last 12 years and haven't owned a bit of it. What makes you think if we wait a couple of years it will be any different? Even from this thread it is clear that there are still people who seem to be ready to vote for the Tories no matter what. The damage will take years to sort out, but all the more reason why we need to start as soon as possible, with a competent government, rather than letting them drag us further into the abyss, and before the NHS collapses entirely. People's lives are at stake.

DullAndOvercast · 20/10/2022 14:45

There are two ways to get an election significant Tory MP back a vote of no confidence in the government or new leader calls an early one.

I really can't see either happening with the polls so bad for Tory party.

Morally you can argue there should be one - but in RL the system we have currently it's unlikely.

Plus Kendodd has a point - if Labour comes in now is it a poison chalice.

I think Tory MP will find candidates most of party can live with - so they pick quickly - try and get back on track - and then limp along till they can't.
