Some men do

Yeah my local bars and clubs are wall to wall guys in string vests and shorts ......

Oh, hold on, 100 pc of them were wearing jeans and shirts.

While the females are dressed in skimpy dresses or low cut tops etc.

Had anyone else noticed this is actually a very UK thing in Europe?

The rest of Europe (or most of it), women seem to dress casually to go out for drinks etc. Like blouses, sweaters, jeans, flat ish boots etc.

We went to the Canaries and Italy and the European tourists looked absolutely mind boggled by the way British young women were dressing (porn style).

LemonDrop22 · 20/10/2022 09:37

Same in the US (east coast) when I was there. Very very casual to go out to a bar or club.

Thank you! She is excellent on this. Here's her TED talk.

Thank you for the link to the TED talk - I couldn't open the other one @Myunclesmustache posted.

I have long said that the hyper sexualised culture we re living in is damaging boys as much as girls, but boys don't realise it. They just learn to reject tenderness, whether for girls or towards themselves, and lose a capacity for intimacy and it damages all relationships and ruins families..

Myunclesmustache · 20/10/2022 09:46

@WhackingPhoenix Ten pages in and I’ve read the words slag, tart, stripper, prostitute, streetwalker, tacky, cheap. All of those tired old misogynist tropes from women, about a woman they don’t know just because she’s wearing a dress they don’t like.

And all those "tired old misogynist tropes" are used in porn where the females are dressed just like that and are called "sluts, hoes, brats, c**ts, slags, bitches."

I fucking despair.
So do I when I see the commercialisation of women's sexuality

What’s next, a woman who wore a dress like that was ‘asking for it’?
Pornography desensitises men and promotes "Rape Culture".

Yes - you're right.

Plus most European women are very aware that ""sexiness" - really looking attractive - has more to do with what is concealed than with what is on show. Italian and French women in particular know how to dress (Yes - I know it's a cultural stereotype, but it's true.)

I think it’s cheap and tarty looking, and there is a middle ground between a “massive bridesmaid dress) and something like this.

So don't buy it then.

Who made you the prom dress police? Her figure is amazing and if someone else wants to wear it to look like her, fair play to them.

SmileyClare · 20/10/2022 11:48

You’re missing the point if you think posters are criticising the model’s figure in the picture.

Shock horror, most parents “police” their children.
I’m finding it hard to believe a mother would buy this for her 16 year old and wave her off cheering “Fair play, you go girl, amazing, I’m so pleased with your choice to copy the sexualised images of celebrities online darling”.

As for posters arguing about whether you can see her arse? We’re not talking about a photo, we’re talking about wearing it in real life.
I’d challenge anyone to wear a dress that short with no knickers and NOT give everyone a glimpse of your undercarriage.

NormaTheWife · 20/10/2022 19:56

Oh so this is the same "empowerment" wearing a dress like that that Demi Rose and all those other numbskulls show with their arses spread in the media every day! Right then....

JanetSally · 20/10/2022 20:21

My niece lives in France. They are bemused at the way English girls dress on a night out. They really do stand out like a sore thumb.

MrsDThomas · 20/10/2022 20:25

Prom?

dont you mean porn?

that is common

ClareBlue · 20/10/2022 20:44

The answer to your question is, of course, who ever wants to

Murdoch1949 · 20/10/2022 21:44

Wouldn't get into most proms dressed like that.

FelicityFlops · 20/10/2022 22:12

Neither flattering, nor elegant nor age-appropriate.
Unfortunately, these days, there is a demographic that thinks it needs to attract on the basis of appearance.
This get up does not give a very positive impression, sadly.

StupidSmallFruit · 20/10/2022 22:17

Maybe it is a UK thing….?

I’m not in the UK (although lived there for several years not sooo long ago), so maybe that is clouding my thinking.

No-one would wear a dress like that to a school dance here.

But even so, all the photos on FB of teens I’ve seen dressed for proms, etc, this year in the UK wore dresses much more like the floor-length dark green one upthread, than even close to the one in the OP.

mycatisannoying · 20/10/2022 22:49

Tacky.

sandytooth · 19/10/2022 17:05

It's fine and has a fair few watchers so I assume people are interested

I bet it does!! Grin

ChocFrog · 20/10/2022 23:51

TempName01 · 19/10/2022 16:15

Why not she looks gorgeous

She looks like a prostitute though.

LouisCatorze · 21/10/2022 17:23

Thinking about it some more, I'd say it's a dress to wear on a hot (but certainly not a first date). It's really not appropriate for mid-teens, however lovely their figures are.

rrf · 21/10/2022 22:13

Isn't this the age to be making these fashion faux Pas though? Gosh, when I think of the awful shite I wore in the 90s..

And, the whole " she looks like a prostitute' thing is a bit pointless. She's not. Its a dress, not a career. Alright, it's not the best, but so what?

Some vile comments on this thread.
That girl could wear that to Asda and shouldnt be judged!.
What the hell has it got to do with anyone else what she wears?
This is what is wrong with society ,and why im teaching my daughter to be herself and not give a shit what people think!.
And as for the comment about 'paedos and predatory men', does that give them the right to behave like that because of how a girl is dressed!?.
Lets teach our daughters to be confident and our sons to be respectful.

Don't be daft.

You don't honestly think she could wear that dress for a casual bimble around Asda and no one would bat an eyelid, cos no one would want to judge??

People judge others for a hell of a lot less than that.
You get tutted at if your children are noisy, for Christ's sake.

mommatoone · 24/10/2022 17:17

@Ameanstreakamilewide im not saying people wont judge. Im saying people shouldnt. What the hell has it got to do with anyone what you choose to wear ? Does it affect anyone elses life ? . NO

mommatoone · 24/10/2022 17:24

@ChocFrog - 🤣🤣🤣
Slim pretty girl in a short dress - must be a prostitute🤔 . Ah yes of course !.
