As in you can just tell they are good people in an average situation.

I agree about being kind to animals/waiting on staff etc. Not being bitchy.

  1. Doesn't gossip
  2. Gives others the benefit of the doubt: If someone slighted them they don't hold grudges and plot revenge, instead they try to cut them some slack and see things from the other person's point of view. Make excuses for them like maybe they are going through something and remember
  3. They are honest about their flaws and self aware. They admit their mistakes and own their part in a problem
  4. Empathic, understands why a person may have done something wrong and doesn't judge them too harshly for it if a person is feeling silly already or stupid or made a mistake, they don't twist the knife further in instead they can be positive about it and gentle, helping them feel comfortable and how, like it was an easy mistake to make and such. Basically they lift people up.

Humble, honest, forgiving, gentle, sees the good in others without wanting recognition or expecting anything in return. Does things for the greater good rather than ME ME ME.

People who don't hog space or attention.

People who seem genuinely interested in others.

People who big up others.

Delatron · 17/10/2022 21:24

Yep the friends one is key.

Fastandlupine · 17/10/2022 21:26

Driving considerately with no road rage

People who seem genuinely interested in others.

People who big up others.

I agree with all of these

People who seem glad to meet/see you
People who remember details you’ve told them in the past
People who make an effort with everyone

Clean shoes is just silly

No: it's about the small things.

It's not about what something is (i.e. it doesn't matter if they're Louboutins or Primark), but if somebody looks after the tiny, minor, small things in their life, such as cleaning their shoes, then they're more likely to look to / after the bigger things.

Obviously, this is not a rigorously tested scientific theory with fully endorsed peer reviews, but I've found it to be a reasonably good indicator over the years.

This feels bitchy.

I think people that smile when then talk to you without knowing you that we’ll feel like good people.

Sandysandwich · 17/10/2022 21:29

In a group, they talk to and include the quieter people on the edge, even in a subtle way- just means they notice others and are trying to make people comfortable.
People who smile easily

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 17/10/2022 21:30

Doing things for others without being asked. For example, picking up something someone's dropped if it's nearer to them and handing it over. Moving out of the way of someone with a buggy or wheelchair, or a pg woman or someone with dch. Giving up their seat on a bus/train for someone with dch or for someone who looks tired.
Handing in money or a purse they'd found without it crossing their mind to keep it.

wb3 · 17/10/2022 21:30

You can often judge the worth of a person by how they treat people who are of no use to them.

I'm vegetarian and sometimes I'm a right dick.

ILoveMonday · 17/10/2022 21:31

People who are just normal. I know it sounds weird but people who talk about their lives and families in an ordinary way are usually my type of person. Not braggy and acknowledge that we all have difficulties sometimes.

Leakygutter · 17/10/2022 21:31

I'm not sure I agree with all the listening and remember to ask about what you were talking about last time etc . IMO this is charm and is most finely developed in those who aren't at all good people. No one is lovely all the time and I don't trust people who present that image to the world.

I'm much more actions speak louder than words. So doing what you say you'll do, putting yourself out to do something good rather than saying something good iyswim.

paintitallover · 17/10/2022 21:32

Clean shoes?!

Nice to animals and waiting staff / receptionists.

Clean shoes.

Road rage peaks at levels 1-3 (which is perfectly acceptable), rather than full-on level 10.

Animals, waiting staff and receptionists. Odd grouping.

Bigslippers · 17/10/2022 21:36

I find good people ‘emit’ goodness. Its hard to explain but I can tell straight away by tone of voice, expressions etc if they are good/kind
Not a lover of gossipers and avoid them like a plague. If a colleague starts to talk about another colleague I wont join in and stir as I dont want to be in a ’click’

Also hate name calling, eye rolling and tutting , body shaming, judging etc
I tend to like nerds and hippies 😁

YouAreNotBatman · 17/10/2022 21:36

I was trying to find a way to describe the person who made me think about my question.
She really includes people, without being rude or pushy.
You know, if she’d offer a drink and the person doesn’t drink, she’d just smile say okey and offer something else.
I can’t imagine her shouting why not with raised eyebrows.
And she ask about people’s lives in a very subtle way, never intrusive way. I.e she didn’t go WHEN are you having kids, WHY are you single, she just manages to have easy flowing conversations and get to know people.
She really seems to take people as they are and have an open mind that not everyone could/ wanted / are ”on time” in the ’life schedule’.

I promise this wasn’t meant to be an ode to her, I’m just really nervous person, so meating her was a lovely experience.

My personal view. If they are good to animals and don’t eat them . On the other end of the scale people who abuse animals are often the same with children . Evil.

...don't eat them? seriously? So all people who eat meat are not good people but vegetarians are....?

thaegumathteth · 17/10/2022 21:38

How they treat people that are serving them. On my first date with dh we went to a cafe and the lady behind the full was going to bring our food over but she was frail tbh and so dh stood talking to her whilst she made it and then said 'oh I may as well take that' .

Good with animals.

People who are fair about people they don't like. I think a lot of people don't do this though.

Whataboutno · 17/10/2022 21:38

Sounds lovely OP, I hope you are describing me in another universe 😁

Beancounter1 · 17/10/2022 21:39

If this is about a potential future partner - get a good look inside his house. Ask if he has a cleaner. If he lives at home with parents, check whether his mum tidies his room.
Could you live at his standard of cleanliness/tidiness?
This is not about being a good person (obvs), but about whether you are compatible. (Don't imagine you can 'train' him to be tidier).

Oh thank God for your post - I know loads of people perfectly good at the social smooze and appearing to be smiley and benevolent who were absolute rotten to the core - tight fisted bullies, and social climbers.

It’s actions that matter. Look at the kind, quietly generous people who go about making things happen without need of social adoration or ego stroking.

Anyone can fake it for a while.

You sound really nice yourself, OP.
