I can't believe how politician-like he is, compared to Liz Truss!
Happy enough with the changes on the whole, what do you think?

@JennyForeigner “incel-wannabe Hayek nerds” 😂😂I’m stealing that!

Thing is, in this country we don’t vote for the PM. We vote for a member of Parliament who will represent our constituency. The MP is usually, but not always a member of a political party. The MP and members of the party then vote for the person who will lead the party. The leader whose party wins the most seats and gets the most MPs in parliament then becomes Prime Minister. It’s not point saying the electorate didn’t vote for Liz , the electorate never votes for a PM. It is different in the USA where that actually do vote for a president.

This.

DoubleDinnurs · 18/10/2022 10:15

I don't like him. The economy is going to fail whatever party or leader is in power. We need someone running the country who is actually going to tackle the inequality and poverty epidemic that us on the horizon. We need to tax the rich and those with multiple, large assets. I don't see any potential leader willing to do that, so we are indeed fucked.

It's like being glad you've been slapped around the face because you avoided being kicked up the arse.

TBF to Hunt, he did not act alone, he acted under the authority of the Tory Govt and David Cameron, he is not the only one to blame for the state of the NHS.

He has been quite good as chair as the health committee and has admitted he got things wrong, especially on maternity services & social care.

However, he is a Tory brexitier, despite voting remain, he compared the EU to the Soviet Union, so probably isn't as "Grown Up" as some might think.

He completely misrepresented what happened in the case of Connor Sparrowhawk, sympathising with the diabolical Katrina Percy (ex CEO of southern health) whilst dishing out a helping of mother blame.

Jeremy Hunt is polished and certainly sounds more believable than Truss, but he clearly has not grasped what goes on in ATUs or the problems with the care of people with learning disabilities.

I have no hopes for him at all.

MindatWork · 18/10/2022 10:20

He is VERY ambitious and has had his eye on the leadership for years. This is the closest he's come so far so I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as PM.

His 'optics' are very good as they say in politics. He spoke at an event I helped organise back when he was tourism minister in 2011 - everyone was very impressed with him, he spoke at length without notes and expressed himself very well. We had meetings with his special advisers (SpADs?) in the run up to the event and they made it quite clear he was gunning for the top job even then...

Georgeandzippyzoo · 18/10/2022 10:22

He has literally fucked up every dept he has been associated with and now hes taking from those who can least afford it! See him about to do the same again!

LeMoo · 18/10/2022 10:25

I've never seen anyone who looks so horribly smug when they grin and now there are pictures of him in the Commons again, smugging all over the place 😡

DoubleDinnurs · 18/10/2022 10:26

I just want rid of the Tories. I don't care who is leading them. A change of leadership (whether official or not) doesn't change anything. They are just rotten the lot of them. I'm not saying Labour wouldn't be either, but at this stage I'm just desperate for change and willing to give it a go. I think this is the sentiment of a lot of people now.

What a fucking mess!

HappydaysArehere · 18/10/2022 10:29

He was a respected Foreign Minister. As such he is probably known by world leaders which helps. He is a better choice than we have had recently and at least he looks and sounds like a credible politician.

HappydaysArehere · 18/10/2022 10:30

Foreign Secretary I should have said.

babyjellyfish · 18/10/2022 10:37

Believeitornot · 17/10/2022 18:00

No I am not happy. Liz Truss is so so bad that it doesn’t take much to look better than her.

There is a reason he’s not made it to leader before and he has tried! Did you watch his whole statement? I did and found him patronising.

He still has the same approach - to balance the books off the back of those who can least afford it. I’ve had enough. The very very rich have has their turn - and continue to do so without investing in this country despite claims to the contrary. We need realistic economics not elite economics.

The main reason he hasn't made leader before is because the leader is chosen by 100,000 swivel eyed loons.

Sindonym · 18/10/2022 11:44

He really looks like Rimmer from Red Dwarf to me. Makes it hard for me to take him seriously

No, he didn’t get that far. MPs decide the shortlist then members chose.

L1ttledrummergirl · 18/10/2022 22:54

He didn't get that far before because he's a cunt, that's why they are bringing him in by the back door.

During that time he couldn't get his wife's nationality right and was involved in selling arms to Saudi!

He did get that far in the 2019 leadership election against Boris Johnson - he was just far more popular
still is. How they must be regretting overthrowing him now

daffodilandtulip · 19/10/2022 06:58

He only looks good because we are comparing him to the shitshow that we've had for the last few weeks.

He might act more like a politician and look more capable of the job than those buffoons, but I worked in the NHS when he ruined that so I don't trust him one bit.

Sapphire387 · 19/10/2022 07:04

You know things are bad when even JEREMY HUNT looks competent by comparison.

He's de facto PM, and angling to be PM.

Lunar270 · 19/10/2022 07:29

ElizabethBest · 17/10/2022 18:24

First he fucked the arts and then he fucked the NHS. So basically I think we’re fucked.

This.

How easily people forget that the last Dr's strike was down to him.

Just a personal thing but he's repealed the IR35 repeal. The Tories have decimated the contract market and he's u turned on the one thing that made sense. Hardly good for business and the economy.

derxa · 19/10/2022 07:54

He's done a good job calming things down. Calling him rude names is utterly infantile. Do you speak like this in real life? Pathetic.

HappyHappyHermit · 19/10/2022 08:04

Equally though let's not hero worship someone who has for the most part been fully on board with the damage the Tories have done to the country over the past decade or so.

Who's hero worshipping him? Something had to be done and he's doing it. You can compare Truss's leadership to that of a failing head teacher and the LEA coming in. Would you prefer nothing was done to reverse the disastrous policies?

Has he?

Gilt yields still way above pre mini budget levels, ftse100 down, as is sterling/$/euro and now we have a succession of spending cuts... Austerity mk2...

Anyone could have reversed Truss's disastrous mini budget.. perhaps a better question is "Why is she still in office?"

colddayinhell · 19/10/2022 09:42

Absolutely terrifying. The end of fake democracy. A takeover by an unelected puppet who has now appointed Blackrock and JP Morgan economic advisors who will ruin run the country. Takeover by the banks. You will own nothing and be happy. Very scary times.
