Smacking DD 5

FluffyFluffMonster · 16/10/2022 11:43

My DD who is 5 has been hit today while I was in the shower. Her grandmother (not related) hit her leaving a red mark, GM said dd was wrapping curtains around herself and she was scared she would hang herself so hit her! GM is actually my eldest DD grandmother but is amazing with youngest and treats her like her own. DD has an amazing relationship with her, adores her. We are only a little family with not much support or involvement from other family. This isn't about me I would stop contact in an instant but because my dd adores GM I don't know what to do? I'm 100% against hitting! I told GM we don't hit in this house and she did say sorry and she was scared which is why she did it! I'm actually ill currently and not thinking clearly!

Well, this is something I could forgive once. And I would tell Gran that. She’s used her get out of jail free card, she hits a child again, then that’s it no contact.

So you would destroy a good family relationship, and deny the child contact with her grandmother, over one single smack? That would be utterly idiotic.

Brush up on your reading comprehension before calling someone utterly idiotic. Read it again. Maybe a bit more slowly this time.

Nothing wrong with my comprehension thank you. She said, 'she hits a child again, it's no contact.' as I said, utterly ridiculous.
This isn't the only poster to suggest no contact over this tiny issue. It's a wonder any family relationships ever survive if people are ready to go no contact for such a flimsy reason. I suspect it's something they say on here and wouldn't dream of in real life.

You're saying she's ridiculous for ending a family relationship over a single smack. That's not what they said. They said they could forgive it once. A single smack could be forgiven. If it happened again, then the relationship would be done. Honestly, have a read of it again before jumping all over someone due to your own poor comprehension.

I don’t know that any relationships in which an adult hits a child can be called “good”. 🤷‍♀️ Rather think you need to raise your bar.

And it wouldn’t be “one single smack” as I would go NC if it were smack #2.

So how many smacks would it take before you kept your child away from a heavy handed relative? 3 smacks? A dozen smacks? Or do you think hitting children is perfectly alright?

They think physical assault against a five year old is a ‘flimsy reason’ to distance yourself from someone. Tells me everything I need to know really.

Why do you think a grown woman hitting a child is a 'tiny issue'?

Love your language: ‘physical assault’. What did she do? A five minute, uncontrolled beating that left the kid half dead?

It is assault. It’s known as justifiable assault in law.

Pumperthepumper · 17/10/2022 21:55

Although people who are violent to kids always prefer cutesy language like ‘smack’ or ‘tap’. Too bad.

A loving grandma giving one single smack is a tiny issue. It's daft to pretend otherwise.

Pumperthepumper · 17/10/2022 21:57

One single assault.

Don't be so dramatic. One smack is hardly 'assault.'

Colderthanever · 17/10/2022 21:58

It’s not justifiable assault, it’s illegal to hit a child to the extent you leave marks. It should be Illegal full stop as it is in Scotland and I think wales. But in England it’s only illegal if you mark the child as this woman did.

Avidreader69 · 17/10/2022 21:57

It is. That’s the legal term for it. Unpalatable, isn’t it?

Colderthanever · 17/10/2022 21:58

My children were smacked when they were toddlers

this makes my blood run cold. Toddlers. Hitting little children . It’s horrific.

And if the child is naughty twice? In my view she would get another smack. It never did my own children any harm, if you read my posts.

Hitting a child is never a tiny issue.

Also, she is not even her grandmother.

Legally yes it's assault and it is absolutely against the law to hit a child , like it is to hit an adult in Scotland and as said I think Wales. In England sadly it is only illegal to hit a child so hard you mark them.

i can’t believe some people would try to claim assaulting a child is acceptable I’m fairly sure if they were walking down the street and someone gave them a hard slap or their boss did as they were not doing the job right or their husband did as the dinner wasn’t to their liking they wouldn’t be claiming it as so acceptable

but hit a small child who is impotent and can’t fight back, aye crack on.

it’s about time that England caught up with the rest of the uk and most of mainland Europe and made this competency illegal, and not just illegal and assault if you leave a mark

Honestly ? Is someone giving you a good slap when you don’t do as your told? No? It wouldn’t do you any harm though, eh?

You talk to children when they are naughty. You don’t hit them.
Im sad for your children. You treat them worse then I treat my dogs, as I’ve never had to hit them either when they’re naughty. And children are a lot brighter and more able to reason with than a dog.

Avidreader69 · 17/10/2022 22:09

You are talking about adults. There is a vast gulf of difference between how you treat adults and how you treat toddlers. You don't 'ground' adults or take their phone away.

I am talking about bringing up children who are unsocialized and who need firmly correcting in order that they grow up to be happy and useful members of society - as my own children did.

For those of you who still have young children, wait until the race is over before judging the competitors.
