To ask, if you don't pick up your dog's poo, why?

The streets here are littered with shit.

I have a dog and collect mine and carry spare bags to share too. I know it's not all that owners. I collect other poo too but can't do the entire neighborhood.

If you don't pick up yours, please tell me why, and what would get you to pick it up.

I challenged a woman yesterday whose dog shitted and she walked off. She still didn't collect it.

I'm wondering about creative solutions.

Fed up of mine and my kids shoes being covered by it.

I do believe some of it is cats too, so cat owners suggestions welcome too.

They don’t care or they don’t have poo bags with them. Think the problem has got worse everywhere.

OoooohMatron · 15/10/2022 09:52

Let's face it nobody is going to come on here and admit they are the sort of scrote who leaves dog shit for other people to tread in. I'd hazard a guess though that they just don't care as it won't be them cleaning off their kids shoes.

Aprilx · 15/10/2022 09:52

I very much doubt that any of it is cat poo you are seeing.

CatGrins · 15/10/2022 09:55

I always think it's weird that so many dogs shit on the pavements, our dog only goes on grass even when he's desperate. Maybe that's just him.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 15/10/2022 09:58

I'm surprised because dog poo on streets is quite rare now where I live. If one is seen on a pavement its photographed and soon posted all over the local spotted FB site with cries of outrage (low crime area). I always carry poo bags plus spares, and have had to pick up someone else's on the school run, but on a country walk I "stick and flick" into the bushes, as its more environmentally friendly than little plastic bags in landfill.
The only person I can excuse is the old guy in the mobility scooter who walks his dog through the village for toileting. People tend to just roll their eyes and pick up after him. My problem with him is that he takes his dog straight across the playing fields to do his business, which knowing he cannot pick up is unacceptable.

AdInfinitum12 · 15/10/2022 10:00

People take photos where I am, if you're spotted not picking it up. That, and the fact everybody seems to have a ring doorbell that records. We've had a fair few instances of this footage being sent to the local council and fines issues once the people are recognised.

Cinders88 · 15/10/2022 10:01

This issue drives me mad! I’m constantly looking at the ground when pushing DS in his pushchair because I don’t want the wheels covered in shit. He’s learning to walk now, and I’m looking forward to him walking while we’re out and gaining independence, but it’s going to be hard work trying to dodge the mountains of shit covering the pavement, especially when he inevitably trips and falls over 😩

And then there’s the phlegm and spit that covers the pavements too .. absolutely disgusting! Why do people do it? If you regularly need to get rid of phlegm, carry a tissue! It makes me grimace when I see people spitting in the street .. and I can’t actually remember ever seeing a woman do it, although I’m sure they do. It typically seems to be men.

Mol1628 · 15/10/2022 10:02

It won’t be cats. They bury their poo.

I don’t know why people do this. I guess because there’s no consequence most of the time? I know there are fines but that surely hardly ever actually happens does it.

Not all the time. My parents have the neighbours cats poo all over their garden all the time. My dad has become obsessed with it in his old age.

They don't pick up the shit cos they're a DIRTY BASTARD. No other answer is correct.

MsPincher · 15/10/2022 10:05

Where I am a lot of it is foxes. I’ve actually seen them and told my neighbours but they are still railing against imaginary dog owners. I doubt it’s cats - they don’t like to gi go in the open and they bury it.

ihatesteve · 15/10/2022 10:06

Because they think no one saw.

I do this too if off a path in the woods. But have you tried compostable bags? You can get decent thick ones online. I would never go bag to plastic now

KnickerlessParsons · 15/10/2022 10:08

That's pretty disgusting too.

Did you not say to her "you need to pick that up"

My dog will hold on until she finds even a tiny bit of grass to poo on which I then pick up. My friends dog just does it anywhere (also picked up obviously). I think dogs are just different unless you specifically trained them.

Almost worse than the people who don't pick up are the people who bag it and leave the bag. At least the poo would biodegrade eventually the bag stays there forever.

BelleMarionette · 15/10/2022 10:10

This is a high crime, inner city area for context. Probably a correlation between dog shit on pavement and crime rates! Possibly some foxes too, but definitely lots of dogs.

The dog ownership explosion/disaster from lockdown is doubtlessly related too. People who got a dog and can't be bothered to look after it properly. The shelters are at bursting point.

Yes I did, loudly, several times. She said she would and walked off. It's still there a day later.

It's not. It's actually recommended

Lockheart · 15/10/2022 10:13

I will pick up in towns / villages, fields, beaches, paths, anywhere people are likely to come into it or it could cause a nuisance.

If it's under a hedge or in a thick verge or we're in "the wild" for example, I will leave it or stick and flick, as it's unlikely to cause a nuisance to anyone, poo is at the end of the day natural and biodegradable, and I'd like to avoid more plastic waste going to landfill where possible.

shiningstar2 · 15/10/2022 10:13

Like most people we always pick up We don't see that much left around here but it is always irritating when we do see it. Why do a minority not see pick up as an important responsibility of you own a dog! What's even worse is those people who bag it then leave it hanging on trees or fences. Why would anybody think that is acceptable?? The ugly bags hang around even longer than the horrific dog mess and is more of a danger to wildlife. Won't keep their own dog mess with them until they find a bin or bin it when they get home. I am seeing a lot of this on my walks and it is totally unfathomable.

vdbfamily · 15/10/2022 10:13

If my dog poos anywhere where anyone might walk, I pick it up but we live very rurally and sometimes if he poos I will get a stick and flick it into thick vegetation to allow natural breakdown over next few days. We do have compostable poo bags but even so, once bagged it takes far longer to decompose.
However, I agree that poo on pavements is disgusting and I used to run the gauntlet of dog poo every morning with 3 small children en route to primary school. I used to actually count the poos and email the council regularly!!!

FriedasCarLoad · 15/10/2022 10:15

Whilst it's not as bad as poo in the middle of the path or bags of poo hanging from trees, I hate the stick and flick under the bushes.

I can still smell it even if I can't see it.

Children are still at high risk of coming into contact with it.

Just pick up after your dog. And if you're concerned about the plastic bags, use compostable ones and have a dog poo composting bin in your garden.

worriedatthistime · 15/10/2022 10:18

The stick and flick is also disgusting and not good for environment surely ,especially if dog has parasites surprised its recommeneded

worriedatthistime · 15/10/2022 10:19

Why do people think it degrades it days , you see it on a pavement or verge for weeks
Also if your dog is carrying worms etc you help spread that to wildlife , other dogs
