To ask, if you don't pick up your dog's poo, why?

The streets here are littered with shit.

I have a dog and collect mine and carry spare bags to share too. I know it's not all that owners. I collect other poo too but can't do the entire neighborhood.

If you don't pick up yours, please tell me why, and what would get you to pick it up.

I challenged a woman yesterday whose dog shitted and she walked off. She still didn't collect it.

I'm wondering about creative solutions.

Fed up of mine and my kids shoes being covered by it.

I do believe some of it is cats too, so cat owners suggestions welcome too.

I always think it's weird that so many dogs shit on the pavements, our dog only goes on grass even when he's desperate. Maybe that's just him.

My dog is the same. She’s very much a lady so likes to go into long grass and avoid making eye contact until finished.

PinkButtercups · 15/10/2022 11:42

It's vile.

Luckily we don't have much around here but where my sister lives it's rife and she's always getting dog poo on her or her kids shoes/buggy!

Where I am they're quite hot on it (so they should be) and regularly have council workers (I think they're the street team) in plain clothes and stop people and check they have poo bags etc to pick up after their dogs and they're fined if they do not. Same goes for a dog without a name tag with address and contact number, fined if they don't have one.

I'm a cat owner, we can't control where our cats shit unfortunately and they are legally allowed to free roam.. and shit. Also a dog owner and I always pick up, but I do see it scattered around everywhere. It's laziness, couldn't give a 'shit' attitude, nothing will make them change, its in their genes to be pricks

I understand cats are allowed to roam, but perhaps car owners could pick up some of the clear cat poo and dispose of it? A community effort to keep the area clean. I'm told by cat owners that they never poo in their owners garden, always elsewhere.

But why? If my dog ate cat poo (disgusting but it happens) they could get seriously ill and die. I’m fed up of cats shitting in my gardens and taunting the dogs. Why do they get free license?? House cats do just fine. They should be held to the same standard.

I rarely pick up my 9 year old labs shit outside. He either does it in the garden or when outside he races well into the woods and hides in bushes/long grass then comes back a minute later with tail wagging furiously and a big grin on his face 🙄. I would never be able to find it.

my pockets are full of poo bags whereever I go, and I pick when he goes somewhere less remote, some of the bags must be 5+ years old now!

So you don't pick up shit in your garden? Lame excuse, keep him on a lead until he's done his shit

VioletInsolence · 15/10/2022 11:45

I think some of them think it’s ok if it’s at the side of the pavement/path but other dogs are attracted to it and end up stepping in it!

I don’t stick and flick but if I’ve got wellies on and there’s a lot of loose soil around I bury it. It’s dog poo - not radioactive waste and is no different to fox poo.

PinkButtercups · 15/10/2022 11:46

My parents cats must be broken. They will only go in their garden.

MissMaple82 · 15/10/2022 11:46

KangarooKenny · 15/10/2022 11:04

Not always, they shit on my lawn.

I can confirm, my cat doesn't bury it

AloysiusBear · 15/10/2022 11:46

I hate people doing stick and flick. Where i live the "undergrowth" is easily walked in by children, plus people stick & flick into the fabulous patches of wild garlic or brambles meaning no one can pick and eat things because its full of crap.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to fine people for not having a tag on with name and address. Dog will be microchipped surely? I walk my dog on a leash and harness in town so It seems unnecessary.

Quveas · 15/10/2022 11:50

That must be an incredibly old page - the Dogs Trust hasn't been known by any other name for 20 years; and the law now has provision to "excuse" all disabled dog owners if they are physically unable to pick up.

And there are much better options:
I have a bogg bag (www.bogguk.com/bogg-shop) but there are also dicky bags (www.dickybag.com/shop) or similar versions if people look. So it is very easy to pick up and take it home or to a suitable bin, even if that is hours away.

Phrenologistsfinger · 15/10/2022 11:51

“Stick and flick” is also environmentally irresponsible! It could spread diseqses and parasites for wildlife, contaminate soil and water with medications or pesticides your dog is taking and it provides excessive amounts of nutrients which disrupts the soil nutrient and PH level, which in areas of high use, massively disrupts the ecosystem.

The natural balance is disrupted by the sheer volume of shite! Whereas, in a natural ecosystem, the number of mammals is limited to more sustainable levels by food and territorial availability.

Phrenologistsfinger · 15/10/2022 11:53

And you can get biodegradable poo bags!

And in terms of plastic use, there are other far more pressing and impactful issues - like why goods being shipped are wrapped and rewrapped in plastic multiple times during the shipment process - or unnecessary food packaging!

Likehuh · 15/10/2022 11:53

And the ‘he’s only being friendly’ arsehole dog owners who are so selfish and arrogant that they truly believe that they and their dog are more important than anyone else.

I’ve seen this kind of comment a few times on here and I’m really confused by it. If I’m out walking and a dog cones up to me and the owner shouts over ‘don’t worry, he’s friendly’ I think, oh lovely, cute dog, give him a pat, don’t worry that he’s going to attack me. I don’t think, wow, you fucking arsehole selfish bastard, how dare you tell me your dog is friendly, you are so entitled, you obviously think you’re better than me.

generalh · 15/10/2022 11:55

This is why I don't have a dog. I could never pick up the poo.

ReeseWitherfork · 15/10/2022 11:56

I once reached into the dog poo dispenser whilst my dog was shitting to discover we’d run out (DH got an earful about stock replenishment that day!). I loitered for a bit and no other dog owners appeared. I looked for a big leaf but no luck. I considered flicking it down a drain but there were no sticks!

…..so I used my sock.

Single most disgusting moment of my life. Thank god I had thick socks on and a little dog that does little poos.

I confessed to my family who all mocked for years, naturally. Until about five years later when my cousin messaged me to say my sock idea came in handy when she caught herself in the same situation.

Top tip from me to all of you dog owners whose husband are nincompoops and don’t refill the dispenser.

sqirrelfriends · 15/10/2022 11:57

I’d love to know. I caught one of our neighbours (previously friendly with) letting her dog do a poo on our front garden.

I had been seeing deposits for weeks and found the culprit through the doorbell cam. My only thought is that they blend in with the bark.

Phrenologistsfinger · 15/10/2022 11:57

@Likehuh in my case, my dog is a highly anxious rescue (has been attacked) and she is terrified by strange dogs approaching her. They aren’t always friendly, either! She is on a lead due to her anxiety and can’t escape. She’s 17kg but I just pick her up now, because people cannot do the decent thing and keep their bloody dogs away.

She is traumatised but even if she wasn't, she is totally reasonable, we don’t like random strange people approaching us without reason, it is no different for dogs! You have no idea if their intention is good or not.

It’s the selfish and arrogant assumption that their dog has all the right to invade your bodily space. It doesn’t matter that the sniff, lick, jump up or approach is ‘friendly’ - it shouldn’t be assumed you welcome it.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 15/10/2022 11:59

I'm a dog owner. I do pick up the poo except when I have spent 10 mins gazing at the spot where I saw my dog do it and STILL can't find it (really difficult on leaf litter). I have sometimes made the dog come back and show me where it is but she can't always. Stick and flick is lazy and horrible. I am often off the paths and fed up with treading in dog poo. I live surrounded by Epping Forest and the forest (corporation of london) "laws" say it is an offence to leave dog poo in the forest.

Gertrudetheadelie · 15/10/2022 12:01

I think a lot here with stick and flick depends on how far off the beaten track it is being left. Round us people seem to be happy to leave it on the narrow grass verge that is on either side of the also narrow footpath. Sometimes that might appear to be close to brambles but in reality it is where you are forced to stand to give way to cyclists or other walkers. We walk my son to school and it is only a mile or so each way but in this half term so far we've had quite a few pairs of dirty shoes and many more: mind the poo!!!!

How do you know he was blind?

He has a white stick, his dog has a hi viz harness, he bumps into things and sometimes need assistance crossing the cross. They have been neighbours of ours for years and his wife and dd are also blind. What other proof do you need?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 15/10/2022 12:02

just another reason why all dogs no exceptions need to be rounded up and yeeted into the sun

just kidding !

not really !

yes really !

Nah dh does most of the picking up at home. If I kept him on a lead he wouldnt go at all, either because he didnt need to or would wait until he had privacy, the woods we go to are remote (far end of a huge windfarm/edge of moors), they are not a local park with kids playing in trees. Any other smart arse comments or ideas?
