To ask, if you don't pick up your dog's poo, why?

The streets here are littered with shit.

I have a dog and collect mine and carry spare bags to share too. I know it's not all that owners. I collect other poo too but can't do the entire neighborhood.

If you don't pick up yours, please tell me why, and what would get you to pick it up.

I challenged a woman yesterday whose dog shitted and she walked off. She still didn't collect it.

I'm wondering about creative solutions.

Fed up of mine and my kids shoes being covered by it.

I do believe some of it is cats too, so cat owners suggestions welcome too.

It’s the selfish and arrogant assumption that their dog has all the right to invade your bodily space. It doesn’t matter that the sniff, lick, jump up or approach is ‘friendly’ - it shouldn’t be assumed you welcome it.

But if you’re out on a walk, you surely will expect there to be dogs around. Dogs greet people by going up to them. That’s normal dog behaviour. Expecting a dog to not ‘invade your bodily space’ 🙄 is not normal adult behaviour.

Merula · 15/10/2022 12:05

Stick and flick is no longer recommended after recent research showed that the phosphorus and nitrogen impact of dog poo has a negative impact on flora - especially in nutrient poor areas, eg wildflower grassland. So it's not a good idea to leave it, even when out in the countryside.

Merula · 15/10/2022 12:05

NT no longer recommend it, for example.

Peachspangle · 15/10/2022 12:08

I read an article that said in some towns in Germany, all new puppies are DNA tested when registered. And any poos found by park keepers are tested and a fine sent out the owner.

Gertrudetheadelie · 15/10/2022 12:10

@Likehuh well I think you have a right to expect that a dog won't jump up at you or that the owner will put them back on the lead if they are near children/someone who clearly doesn't want to be near a bounding dog. We recently had a great Dane bound up to my 4 year old and the owner was quite put out that I picked up my son because his "friendly" dog face-to-face with my son!

Because sometimes my dog is a asshole and will decide to shit on the edge of a cliff or a steep vertical bank!

Mine once pooed through a chain link fence. There was just a road with no walkway on the other side

I very much doubt that any of it is cat poo you are seeing.

There is a cat on our street that poo’s in the drain gutter things that run across the pavements and occasionally in the gutter on the road. The owner must see it and I’m sure is aware it’s their cat because other neighbours know which cat it is. So they should bloody well pick it up!! I have to remind my DC to be careful of “the dips” as they call them incase there’s cat poo.

Darbs76 · 15/10/2022 12:14

They are on their phone and don’t notice or walking miles ahead so don’t even notice

or

can’t be bothered

threecupsofteaminimum · 15/10/2022 12:15

It's fuckijg everywhere where I live in south London.

As for the people who flick it in bushes, this is why a nice walk can be ruined by the stench of dog shit they can't see in bushes.

People are disgusting.

oakleaffy · 15/10/2022 12:15

@BelleMarionette Completely agree, dog shite on pavements and parks and fields is gross.
thankfully poo is much rarer now than it was, as more owners are bagging and binning, but with the increase in ''Van living'' , human excrement is alas much commoner than it once was.

Dog poo is bad enough, but human faeces are the absolute worst.

Stomacharmeleon · 15/10/2022 12:16

@Lockheart was a joke.... chill

Mariposista · 15/10/2022 12:17

The only time I don’t is if he races deep into some bushes and craps in a bed of stinging nettles. Mainly because I would never find it. But otherwise I am not too posh to scoop.

SpaghettiSquash · 15/10/2022 12:23

@PutinIsAWarCriminal There's no excuse for the man in a disability scooter not to pick up. He needs a long handled poop scoop. I would suggest it to him next time you see him and then report to the council if he continues to not pick up.

TheSmallestOneWasMadeline · 15/10/2022 12:24

We bumped into a couple we knew both walking our dogs once. Their dog did a poo and the man clearly saw but tried to pretend he hadn't. DH said 'X has just had a poo there' and the man got flustered and said he never usually pooped on walks, he hadn't any bags etc. DH silently handed him one of our poo bags and he sheepishly picked it up. But they clearly dont bother otherwise.

I have seen a few people genuinely not notice their dog having a poo if they are further up ahead or behind and will whip out a bag and go find it when you let them know, but I guess if nobody tells them it would get left.

Also cats definitely do not always bury their poo and cat shit can be VILE. We had a neighbors cat shit all over our lawn for years, I dont know what they fed that cat (or maybe it had something wrong with it) but truly did the most feral of shits. I used to put a peg on my nose to deal with those which I've never had to do with my dogs poo. Yet cat owners seem to get a free pass when it comes to shit..

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 15/10/2022 10:31

I don't have a dog but I can't understand the thinking behind the bags of poo hanging on branches/on fence posts etc. Surely the really gross part is actually picking it up...? Once its inside the bag and tied up why could it not then be put somewhere more suitable than the branch of a tree?

The only, and still unacceptable, reason I can think of is that it still stinks to high heaven when its inside the bag and some people dont want to offend their nostrils?

When I walk NDN dog, I tie the bag to the dog end of the lead so it doesn't waft into my nose! Then head for the nearest dog bin.

JaniceBattersby · 15/10/2022 12:37

Our local Forestry Commision-owned wood no longer recommends stick and flick. The place is absolutely teeming with families and little kids who like to have a wander off the path sometimes. The amount of shit literally right next to the path is unbelievable. People are completely vile. They know full well toddlers will step in it.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 15/10/2022 12:42

Mol1628 · 15/10/2022 10:02

It won’t be cats. They bury their poo.

I don’t know why people do this. I guess because there’s no consequence most of the time? I know there are fines but that surely hardly ever actually happens does it.

I doubt it’s cats but it’s a bloody myth that (all) cats bury their shit

< next door neighbour’s cat, I’m looking at you 😆 >

Not all the time. My parents have the neighbours cats poo all over their garden all the time. My dad has become obsessed with it in his old age.

THIS

TwoTowels · 15/10/2022 12:46

I see no-one has yet admitted to being a culprit!

I think generally most dog owners are responsible, and it only takes one to ruin a neighborhood. A large dog could easily deposit five large shits per day on a pavement.

I was walking home once and around 30ft in front of me I saw a rough-looking couple with an Alsatian cross the road and then the woman threw a bag of dog shit into my front garden! I wanted to follow them home but they were too quick for me.

Coincidentally they were heading in the direction of a local neighborhood that has a well-reported dog shit problem.

Userno64473836326 · 15/10/2022 12:46

I think very few people would admit it.

i have hard people say that it not their job to pick it up... don't get a dog then!!

also, I think when dogs are walked off lead they often turn a blind eye!

it is the minority ruining it for all owners though, the vast majority of owners are great, including myself!

there is no excuse!

skyeisthelimit · 15/10/2022 12:47

It happens in the countryside too. My brother regularly gets people trespassing in his fields with their dogs, allowing them to poo wherever they like and never picking it up. He has asked repeatedly for people to stop trespassing and to pick up their shit, but they never do. He has even explained the reasons behind it, like how it causes illness to cattle etc.

These people are so entitled that they don't give a shit. They want to live in the countryside but they don't care about the people who own it and manage it and make a living from it.

dottiedodah · 15/10/2022 12:48

We have a dog ,each time we go out its "bags, lead and keys," in that order. Baffles me why so many people with dogs seem to have selective Amnesia! We live close to the Beach ,massive bins everywhere(which take poo) most people pick up,however I saw a family with a large doggy leave a big present behind. Before I could say anything ,a lady appeared and told them of it, backed up by me.They said we had "ruined"their day and were so "embarrassed"! Walked off leaving us speechless!

TwoTowels · 15/10/2022 12:48

I watched our cat trying to bury a shit once. She was normally an indoor cat but we would let her out in the garden on a nice summer's day. It took her around 40 minutes and even then she did a half-assed job!

hellcatspangle · 15/10/2022 12:48

That's pretty disgusting too. Our local woods hasn't even got a dog bin. They have signs up telling people to get a stick and flick it off the path into the undergrowth.

linelgreen · 15/10/2022 12:53

We had a huge one on our front law that I spotted about midday yesterday so I spent ages running through the CCTV muttering about identifying the culprit finally saw that about 4am it was a fox😀
