To ask, if you don't pick up your dog's poo, why?

The streets here are littered with shit.

I have a dog and collect mine and carry spare bags to share too. I know it's not all that owners. I collect other poo too but can't do the entire neighborhood.

If you don't pick up yours, please tell me why, and what would get you to pick it up.

I challenged a woman yesterday whose dog shitted and she walked off. She still didn't collect it.

I'm wondering about creative solutions.

Fed up of mine and my kids shoes being covered by it.

I do believe some of it is cats too, so cat owners suggestions welcome too.

I don’t walk mine in the streets. They run wild over the field and the woods. I’m not wading into the undergrowth in search of a big shite

People take photos where I am, if you're spotted not picking it up. That, and the fact everybody seems to have a ring doorbell that records. We've had a fair few instances of this footage being sent to the local council and fines issues once the people are recognised.

Glad we have our ring! caught a man letting his dog come on our drive, while I was in hospital, and letting it shit in our plants, then just casually walking off without picking it up! Couldn't really do anything about it though as I only saw it hours later and didn't recognise him, but I've been keeping an extra eye out now! Dirty bastard!!!

Yeah, fuck those people who are disabled and can't physically pick it up.

I agree that it was an utterly ignorant and presumptuous post.

Disabled people and blind people (so often with assistance dogs too) are amongst the exceptions regarding the laws on picking up dog shit. For obvious reasons.

For other people though, there is no excuse.

I used to have two dogs. I always cleared up after them. I'd use nappy sacks when out on the road etc. and the stick and flick method when in fields and woodland. Like others have said, it is recommended and is far preferable to poo left in bags either on the ground or up trees.

IamEarthymama · 15/10/2022 10:45

Like everyone else on here I have bags in the pocket of every coat and jacket, in every bag even if I am unlikely to be walking the dog wearing said coat or using said bag.
Having been caught out once when dog was a pup and having to use a tissue and walk along to find a bin with said poo in my hand I dread not having a bag with me.

We live near a park with sports fields and there is £100 fine if your dog is on the pitch. I didn't think this was necessary as most people here are vigilant about picking up but then I visited another football pitch in our borough that isn't surrounded by houses as ours is.
It was disgusting and I really hope that people do get caught and fined.

It's just like litter. Why can people carry their bottles and sandwiches to the park but lose the ability to stagger to a nearby bin under the weight of the empty wrappers and containers!

I'm surprised because dog poo on streets is quite rare now where I live. If one is seen on a pavement its photographed and soon posted all over the local spotted FB site with cries of outrage (low crime area). I always carry poo bags plus spares, and have had to pick up someone else's on the school run, but on a country walk I "stick and flick" into the bushes, as its more environmentally friendly than little plastic bags in landfill.
The only person I can excuse is the old guy in the mobility scooter who walks his dog through the village for toileting. People tend to just roll their eyes and pick up after him. My problem with him is that he takes his dog straight across the playing fields to do his business, which knowing he cannot pick up is unacceptable.

i think we live in the same place! Mobility scooter or not I get so annoyed he thinks his dog can shit all over the pavements and people will turn a blind eye ‘because he can’t pick it up’. Not my problem! It’s a massive dog as well and does huge turds.

worriedatthistime · 15/10/2022 10:47

The ones who leave it on the pavement are probably the ones who don't worm regularly as well and I always wonder what their gardens are like of they can't bring themselves to pick up
Never left mine on pavement , dog had upset stomach once and got water and washed it awAy of nearby shop, had to clean dog shit from kids shoes too many times to want to have to do it again
We have a bigger cat shit problem here though , dog owners usually pretty good

Lockheart · 15/10/2022 10:48

I lost my last boy two years ago and I'm STILL finding bags everywhere!

BelleMarionette · 15/10/2022 10:44

Clearly stick and flick is controversial but it's not relevant anyway for urban areas. No woodland around here. Poo on the pavement has no controversy about whether it should be picked up.

If it's a poo bag issue, what about a poo bag dispenser?

It's an anonymous forum here. Anyone like to say they just leave it on the pavement and don't come back, and why?

The council field near me had a poo bag dispenser but because people were taking handful instead of buying for their own supplies they soon stopped refilling it. It was really handy if you had forgotten or used what had taken with you.

I agree though, there is no excuse for not clearing it up. Quite often where we are there are piles of horse crap on the country lanes, it think that it disgusting too.

QuestionableMouse · 15/10/2022 10:22

Yeah, fuck those people who are disabled and can't physically pick it up.

Then those people shouldn’t own a dog if you can’t care for it. I am one such former dog owner. Working and assistance dogs for the blind are of course not an issue.

curlymom · 15/10/2022 10:50

I carry bags everywhere but if I see a poo I don’t automatically think someone just walked off. Maybe it’s another animal. Or a lost dog.

jtaeapa · 15/10/2022 10:50

It’s simple. People who don’t care about anyone but themselves. And can’t be bothered to buy shit bags, carry them, bend over etc. just makes their life easier. I’d like to see dna testing and removal of the dog if people do this.

KnickerlessParsons · 15/10/2022 10:51

At least horses are vegetarian!

worriedatthistime · 15/10/2022 10:51

@Topseyt123 I thought guidel dogs generally were trained to go on demand ? Not often they crap in the street
People that can't bend to pick up , well can they control a large dog of needed as well , maybe need someone to help pick up or have some bags ask another dog walker would they mind , surely unless an assistant dog you have to able to meet the dogs needs

HollyJollypup · 15/10/2022 10:51

Mol1628 · 15/10/2022 10:02

It won’t be cats. They bury their poo.

I don’t know why people do this. I guess because there’s no consequence most of the time? I know there are fines but that surely hardly ever actually happens does it.

No they do not. Not all cats bury there shit.

Gemmanorthdevon · 15/10/2022 10:51

Crikey! Where do your kids play to have an issue with it regularly on their shoes? It's quite rare as a pavement problem now, and your " creative" solution is quite a simple one really. You ring the dog warden who with enough reports on a specific area will come and dna it if that LA has the facilities to do so, or they will open an investigation to find culprit. Then it's their job to be creative. 🙂 Us responsible dog owners get crosser about it than any others, because it gives us and our incredibly loved doggits a bad name!

That said, I'll fess up! There IS occasions when I cant pick up. Exclusively happens in the moors....in Autumn! Where a lot of things on the ground are similar in colour, and idiot dog... poos an runs! Many hours we have spent scouring the moors for poo on surfaces other people likely will never set foot on, and those that do will do so wearing boots that have seen poo from all manner of wildlife prior! We now have a system. DS now old enough and far quicker than us. He yells POOOOOOO ALEERRTTT! Then throws a glow stick from his adventure back pack..... ( he once ran out and sacrificed an emergency fun sized curley wurly. So proud of him )

I live with the crushing guilt of these historic failures. I see me coming across those poos in my sleep, so happy to have finally been able to do the right thing.. then I wake. Still living with the guilt from the knowledge that at least twice in 2020 I left poo on the moors before we were swallowed by fog.... Don't anyone make it worse please....

Soooo yeah. The dog warden.

As a manager of kids football teams I fully support the no dogs on football pitches. I’m also a dog owner.

bedore every match I have to search the pitch for dog poo, and often find it.

it’s all very well saying you clear up but plenty don’t. By not allowing any dogs on the pitch nobody can be falsely accused etc, the council are literally asking you to stay off a football pitch, there’ll be plenty of other places you can go

BigWoollyJumpers · 15/10/2022 10:55

We have bag dispensers and dog poo bins all around our village. Still, there are those who pick up and then hang in trees, or just leave on someone's front grass. Just so weird. Someone recently has gone round putting up signs that say "There is no dog poo fairy". Someone hung a bag of dog poo on it 😡

curlymom · 15/10/2022 10:55

we do not visit our local park when used for childrens football as they and their parents leave wrappers and rubbish all over which is a hazard if a dog ingests. The problem exists there too. They mainly play in the summer

Galaktoboureko · 15/10/2022 10:57

Once a few people have trodden on it the turd pretty much disappears into the grass. No cause for alarm. 🤷‍♀️

jtaeapa · 15/10/2022 10:57

People are happy to let their dog shit slap bang in the middle of pavements near me. I regularly pick it up near my house.

Yeah but I don't want to step on dog shit. It stinks and I hate cleaning it out of my boots! Pick it up ffs!

Topseyt123 · 15/10/2022 11:03

For those assuming that all cats bury their poo - no, not necessarily.

I often had to clear up my cat's poo although he did try to bury it. The soil round here is heavy clay and if it dries out fully it goes like concrete. Cats cannot dig it no matter how hard some might try.

Elderly cats can find burying poo problematic too as they often lack the strength and agility of youth. Where mine had been able to bury as a young cat, he ceased being able to as he aged.

Disabled or poorly cats too might not bury it. I had a friend with a three legged cat which couldn't bury it because he simply didn't have enough limbs to stand on whilst he tried.

There are many reasons why a cat might not bury poo. Many do try, but there are also some cats who just don't anyway and never seemed to get that memo.

Not always, they shit on my lawn.

Meltinthemiddle · 15/10/2022 11:04

Because sometimes my dog is a asshole and will decide to shit on the edge of a cliff or a steep vertical bank!

Mrsherdwick · 15/10/2022 11:05

They’re very selfish idiots that’s why they don’t pick up dog poo. You should see what it’s like in Spain. Absolutely disgusting. I’ve just walked my dog out and picked up 10 bags of other dogs poo. That’s in a 20 minute dog walk!!
