Give us a Bank Holiday for Charles’s coronation

Wish the government would stop being such a miserable bunch and give us our bank holiday!

I don’t know where the op gets the idea where most people will be entitled to a bank holiday off.

I am fortunately but that’s only because I work days in a factory.

ive worked in hospitality,
hospital cleaning
shift work
retail

ive always had to work a bank
holiday in these roles because that’s when my shift fell!

many other professions won’t get a bank holiday either, nursing, carers and many more

think the op is winding us up or is very naive

Toddlerteaplease · 12/10/2022 21:20

I thought there was talk
Shoot it being on the 2nd or 3rd of June. Which would have been lonely as it would be the 70th anniversary of the Queens coronation.

blackheartsgirl · 12/10/2022 21:22

And yes they would cancel chemo. Happened to a friend of mine on the day of the queens funeral.

How cruel. Surely chemo is an essential service

I know not all jobs give you bank holidays off - I've worked jobs that didn't in the past - but I'm not sure that's a good reason not to have any extra. Take what you can when you can.

Agree it would be better in autumn though. It's a long slog from the August bank holiday to Xmas. Maybe make Halloween a holiday in honour of our blessed prince Charles or whatever? I'd get behind that. The yanks have the right idea with the old Thanksgiving happening around then. Just breaks things up a bit.

mummybearcub2022 · 12/10/2022 07:22

I think you are naive, most people will be entitled to bank holidays in this country.

6.7 million self employed people are not
Anyone whose contract specifies a fixed number of bank holidays

Wichit · 12/10/2022 21:39

Every fucking thing got cancelled for the queen's funeral but that's not a normal bank holiday. Mostly things are open on bank holidays.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 12/10/2022 21:45

I'm not bothered by BH. I want a badge for my camp blanket. Will there be a badge does anyone know?

tigger1001 · 12/10/2022 21:57

The exam diet is in full flow in Scotland end April to June. Exam dates set - so would have to be moved about if another holiday given or dates moved about. It's not all about people having an extra day off or changing days around. There are other considerations.

The whole purpose surely of it being on a Saturday is that there isn't a bank holiday.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 12/10/2022 21:58

It's on a Saturday. Won't happen.

Carlycat · 12/10/2022 22:10

You do know that bank holiday pay is discretionary? Not everyone gets paid for an enforced day off

Carlycat · 12/10/2022 22:33

wifeofaclosefriend · 12/10/2022 09:54

OP is either a troll or incredibly stupid.

This. And entitled beyond belief

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/10/2022 22:58

GonnaGetGoingReturns

I do think Charles III will be bloody awful as monarch though. Thank god it won't be for too long.“

He’s got genetics on his side, wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you.

I’m ambivalent but massively warmed to him during this evening’s news at ten, when he greeted our esteemed PM on mic with “dear oh dear …… anyway”

what’s not to love 🤣

Getofftheladder · 12/10/2022 23:36

mummybearcub2022 · 12/10/2022 07:17

Gosh what a miserable country we’ve become, people talking against their own interests and rejecting a bank holiday!

You realise bank holidays don’t benefit everyone right?

PrincessScarlett · 12/10/2022 23:57

I am one of the many who are self employed and do not get paid for bank holidays. I lost hundreds of pounds due to the public holiday for the Queen's funeral and I would not welcome another bank holiday in the current economic climate.

PalatineHill · 13/10/2022 00:47

I’m finding the race-to- the-bottom psychology on this thread really strange. If you don’t get a benefit you want, rather than say that nobody else should get it because you don’t, why not argue for whoever gets it to get it, then you can argue completely reasonably that you yourself should also have it, based on the fact that other people are getting it?

This kind of attitude must give a really great advantage for UK employers who could or should be supporting this kind of thing, seeing so many people doing their work for them in saying why the employers should not bother.

I'm finding the entitlement on this thread really strange. A much shorter than usual coronation event is being held on a weekend day and people think they should get a holiday???

As for the OP - it seems they want a holiday, but don't want anyone involved in essential services to have one. Talk about self-centred.

Exactly. Spends the whole thread banging on about how important a bank holiday is and how ‘most will have it off’ but also thinks that it’s ‘cruel’ that chemo would be cancelled.

Obviously essential services have to continue on a bank holiday. My comment was pointing out that I would have though chemo sessions would be counted as such…

And what about exams?

Hospital appointments?

It's not all about getting an extra days leave, especially when the event is on a Saturday. Should schools have to reschedule exams just so people can have an extra day off? Should people awaiting treatment/operations have to get these rescheduled?

sweatyannie · 13/10/2022 07:51

I think it's very sensible to have it on a Saturday.

The police bill will be horrendous without having to pay double time BH rates.

User686545677 · 13/10/2022 07:51

“We’ve all got a massive stick up our butt about the fact we don’t get bank holidays off and it’s so unfair and blah blah blah” whilst at the same time telling OP she’s wrong for wanting a bank holiday.

I don't think you understand how the NHS works.

And it's not just chemo, it's everything which isn't an emergency. What about the poor people who've been waiting 18 months for their hip replacement for example? When will they have their surgery? There aren't empty theatres and staff sitting around to pick up the 1000s of patients who'd be cancelled by an extra bank holiday.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 13/10/2022 08:31

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/10/2022 21:07

As if you suddenly care…

And why wouldn't she? You think it's beyond human compassion to show concern for cancer patients, especially after so many of them became a sideways concern and practically collateral damage as the rest of the nation focused on COVID?

Actually, scrub that. The tone of your post reveals all anyone needs to know. (And, BTW, there was just no need for it).

Raquelos · 13/10/2022 09:01

YellowTreeHouse · 12/10/2022 07:20

Incorrect. “Most” people won’t have it off, and the the vast majority of those won’t get it in lieu either.

How naive you are.

Actually, about 2/3 of employed (including self-employed) people are in occupations that will have it off. I was interested so I had a look at the Gov website here if you go to the bottom of the page and download the data, then filter ethnicity to all and the year to 2021 you will see the breakdown.

Interesting I thought, but I am a data geek so feel free to disagree 🙂
