Give us a Bank Holiday for Charles’s coronation

Wish the government would stop being such a miserable bunch and give us our bank holiday!

Prince Charles has decided either sensibly or not to fit in with austerity or not to have his coronation on a weekend when there won't be a point in giving a Bank Holiday.

He doesn't seem to realise that a lot of us (me included) are fed up of the monarchy, a Bank Holiday would at least be a tempter to us. I was one of those who spent ages queueing up to see his mother lying in state so the least I'd expect as a British subject would be an extra Bank Holiday.

This makes zero sense. You are fed up of the monarchy yet queued for hours to see the queens coffin and because of that you EXPECT a bank holiday?

This thread is bonkers.

OP is either a troll or incredibly stupid.

I don’t think that’s called for. As you can see from the nearly 50/50 split on the AIBU vote, a lot of us feel the same way as OP.

Honestly couldn't give a shite! Not all of us get bank holidays at work

tigger1001 · 12/10/2022 10:36

I'm happy that it's on a Saturday. Anyone who wants it off has got plenty time to book the time off.

The economy is struggling and bank holidays cost money.

And while most will get bank holidays, it doesn't follow that they get all bank holidays. Most will have a set number included in their contracts so additional ones are not given.

And plenty people will not get paid at all if their employers close on a bank holiday.

We also need to think about schools - may here is full on exam time, cannot afford any further time off, or having to move exams around.

And let's face it, the Windsors are the last family who are going to inspire one of those.

Because it’s nice to have a day off work… why wouldn’t anyone want that.

Because the work doesn't go away.

Because it creates a lot of extra work to reschedule stuff that was scheduled for that day.

One of my DC had an urgent hospital investigation cancelled because it fell on the BH due to the queen's funeral, as did 10s of thousands of others across the UK. You might think sticking a crown on a rich man's head is worth that level of distress and disruption. I disagree.

Ponoka7 · 12/10/2022 10:48

As said, cancelled medical appointments, which can then put another month on getting things like children's hearing aids (my GC was one). Planned surgeries cancelled. We are already playing catch up on surgery and who knows what this winter will bring. Taxi drivers, along with small businesses and many self employed people, making nothing that day. Sports, theme parks, tourist attractions etc all closed during what is usually decent weather. In many areas the bus routes don't run on bank holidays. The last bank holiday was a shambles and lost the country millions. The Queen's funeral should have been a Saturday. Our health systems can't afford bank holidays.

because many people don’t get paid if they don’t work.

If you're fed up of the monarchy, why on earth would you queue for hours to see a monarch's coffin?

Wait, what?! Did you think queuing should be rewarded with a day off?

I'm fed up with the monarchy since the Queen died. Doesn't mean I can't or should not have queued to see her coffin.

I do think Charles III will be bloody awful as monarch though. Thank god it won't be for too long.

Because our head of state is having his coronation? Why would anyone not want an extra day off?

Because for those of us in the NHS know what an absolute pain it is. My department see approx 160 patients per day. For an extra bank hol we have to rebook them. For a lot of those patients we don't have much leeway so it realistically means somehow squeezing 200 Patients into the same length clinic on other days of the same week. For Queen's funeral being understandable short notice, when our poor department secretary had to organise phonecalls to 160 elderly patients to phone (plenty hard of hearing, some with dementia, some out all day so we couldn't get hold of them) it got to a point where the extra day at home with family just wasn't worth all the extra faff and running round we all had to do.

If a factory has to make 100,000 loaves a day to keep Asda shelves fully stocked and they close that means running at 125,000 loaves for the previous 4 days to keep enough bread out on the shelves, which might be beyond their capacity.

There's plenty of other examples. Its not just a case of Margaret who works in accounts is a day behind with her files or Dave down the garage has to wait an extra day for your Vauxhall spare part. Its nice to have extra time with your family but not when you have to do so much extra work to get it.

I don't think queuing should be rewarded with a day off. But the new King should be aware that if loads of his subjects (that's what we are) bothered to queue, turn out for etc his mother's funeral, then to make a case for having a monarchy as opposed to a republic then you have to play to/appeal to the people/subjects. A bank holiday would help.

It was something most of us, but especially where I work, looked forward to this year.

Why? We have a large number of BHs compared to most countries. They also drain businesses & we had 2 extra last year.

Bank holidays cost the economy millions

This. If we all want jobs we should think smarter.

You never know, there's longevity in that family and he's quite clean living isn't he? I have read that he watches his diet and weight. Could be another 30 years!

But the people who queued to see the coffin DID get their bank holiday ffs. The Funeral!

passport123 · 12/10/2022 11:09

How many operations do you think the NHS does on a usual working day? You want all of them delayed by a BH? The minute you have a BH and schools/nurseries are shut, many NHS staff can't work.

Schulte · 12/10/2022 11:12

Some people seem to enjoy being overly dramatic. Why would tourist attractions and theme parks be closed? They aren’t on a normal BH, are they? And with this much notice, surely there wouldn’t be thousands of medical appointments to suddenly reschedule. Appreciate the mourning period and funeral was a PITA but this is a bit different.

PugInTheHouse · 12/10/2022 11:12

Schulte · 12/10/2022 10:09

I don’t think that’s called for. As you can see from the nearly 50/50 split on the AIBU vote, a lot of us feel the same way as OP.

This is because many people do not understand the implications of it as long as it doesn't affect them then they don't care.

Loads of people on here have already said they run small businesses that will not be able to recover their costs, not to mention that they will need to pay staff holiday pay that day.

It does cost NHS money, what about hospitals with inpatients, they have safer staffing levels to adhere to so they need additional agency/bank staff to cover when people are off as there are not enough substantive staff to cover this. Corporate teams are different if course. Not to mention those who may call in sick etc on that day as they don't want to work. Staffing models are planned with normal bank holiday, leave, training included. Not additional days that are paid at enhanced rates plus additional leave.

Yes hospitality generally does well on a bank holiday but they still need to facilitate an extra day's leave at another time for these additional bank holidays (plus those who do have to pay enhanced hourly rate are paying out more) so this all costs money, they won't often make enough money to cover all these additional costs.

These are just basics of running a business. It's just thoughtless and selfish to not consider these issues IMO.

Obviously we'd all like an extra day off work to spend with family etc, most people are not disputing that but the lack of understanding on here is astounding. That doesn't make people miserable. Just concerned.

No but they may have to pay enhanced hourly rates to staff and give an extra day's leave to them which will cost them. It could be a good day for them numbers wise but if its raining it will be quieter in a theme park (but open so staff need to be paid regardless) and I don't know if the income covers the additional costs as I haven't seen their cost models of course. Normal bank holidays will be built into their costings already.

BertieQueen · 12/10/2022 11:16

Many don’t get paid for bank holidays, self employed don’t!

a days wages is a lot of money for many to lose.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 12/10/2022 11:18

I think people are probably worrying about a repeat of the funeral bank holiday in terms of closures, though agree that isn't likely.

It wouldn't surprise me to see some cancellations of big events and sports though.
Particularly the ones where the peasants can't be trusted with free speech lest they chant something insufficiently Windsor licking.
