It costs the NHS an absolute fortune and makes if very difficult to provide care. We had to cancel all community appointments and also many non emergency surgeries. Whilst I understand that it's plenty of notice this time it's still a nightmare due to a higher % of DNAs and also facilitating another annual leave day later in the year. The cost implications are huge. Many businesses are affected in a similar way.
Obviously it's nice to have a day off but it's not good for everyone.

I think you are naive, most people will be entitled to bank holidays in this country.
YellowTreeHouse · 12/10/2022 07:20
Incorrect. “Most” people won’t have it off, and the the vast majority of those won’t get it in lieu either.
How naive you are.
mummybearcub2022 · 12/10/2022 07:19
Yes, most will have it off and some will get a day off a lieu. Only some people have BH tied into their annual holiday allowance. Better to have it than not?
YellowTreeHouse · 12/10/2022 07:16
You realise not everyone gets bank holidays off, yes?
More bollocks.
FaazoHuyzeoSix · 12/10/2022 07:27
A lot of small and medium-sized businesses lose money for each extra bank holiday. Now is not a good time to make it even more difficult to turn a profit.
The coronation is a non-event for most people. If you care enough that you can't bear to work that day and you have a job that makes you work that day, you take the day off. Most people will just carry on with their normal lives. After all the fuss about the late Queen's death, less than half the population actually engaged with the funeral. The number who care about the coronation will be a lot lower.

Because our head of state is having his coronation? Why would anyone not want an extra day off?
TigerRag · 12/10/2022 07:18
It's a Saturday and we have a Bank Holiday the Monday before and 4 weeks later. Why do we need another one?
I thought the coronation was on a Saturday, not a Monday?

I had an appointment cancelled and I saw the nurse on Monday that I should have seen then. I was surprised by the nurse that said she wanted to see me but the NHS bosses wouldn’t let them work because they didn’t want to pay them bank holiday rates . So all this time I thought naively that it was the nurses maybe child care reasons etc but nope it was because they didn’t wanna pay them bank holiday rates I thought wow that’s not the spin that the media said is it they blamed the nurses

gosh what a miserable sour faced bunch we’ve all become! This thread just proves it
Big fan of a bank holiday here! What’s the point in the royal family if we don’t get a day off when a new king is coronated? (Is “coronated” a word?!)
PugInTheHouse · 12/10/2022 07:35
I think you are short sighted rather than being naive. Many pub/restaurants don't pay for bank hols off or get enhanced pay. That's a fairly big industry. There are loads of other examples. Many businesses in general are having a very tough time, this potentially could just add to it.
In theory it's a lovely idea, in practical terms not so much.
Breathmiller · 12/10/2022 07:36
I have my own small business that is already on it's knees after the pandemic. I'm not sure it will survive the heating bills this winter. I will not get paid if we have another bank holiday just as I didn't get paid for the last one. I will already lose out from the Saturday of the coronation as it will probably not be worth opening that day either. It's not as simple as being miserable for some.
UnicornMumcraft · 12/10/2022 07:36
The economy (if we even have one by then) cannot cope with a third Bank Holiday in May. A crashed economy, failed businesses and job losses probably isn’t how the RF want to mark the coronation.
(Now, bit of a stretch, but a General Election to mark the coronation would be fab and far more appropriate in my opinion!)

We already have an extra bank holiday as Christmas falls on a Sunday. C'mon Op, admit it You are just workshy.
If your asking whether I would prefer a day off with my family instead of working, then the answer is obviously yes. That doesn’t mean I’m workshy. What an odd thing to say.

You spouting nonsense that most people will get the day off or paid in lieu prob isn't helping.
NHS, police, ambulance, fire, large shop workers, those on minimum hour contracts, it's not just a giant day off. Services still have to run.
Plus another day lost for schooling after the couple of years the kids have had they need all the time they can get.
