Wish the government would stop being such a miserable bunch and give us our bank holiday!

My work doesn't give time off for bank holidays, we don't even get Christmas off.
I don't see the point in bank holidays in general so why they should add another one is beyond me, all it does is cause inconvenience.

For everyone going on about the economy - AFAIK, “they”* don’t have a clue how much a BH costs the economy, with some models showing it actually could be a boost (and anyone who is agape at this has clearly never been to B&Q and/or a pub on a BH). There’s lots of disagreement in this area.

*”they” = experts, folk who are paid to work this stuff out

I expect they'll move the one on 1st May which will be annoying to anyone who already has events planned or trips booked to coincide.

This

FFS OP, this country is in the middle of a major economic crisis. Stop being so selfish and grow up.

Oh lighten up and stop being so dramatic, life is too short to be working so much.

The country is in financial shit, the kids have had enough days off.

And it's smack in the middle of exam season.

life is too short to be working so much

that is a spectacularly tone deaf comment, made by someone who isn’t worried about putting food in their kids mouths and paying their rent/mortgage

So give up work then. Or take a days holiday. Don’t assume everyone else thinks it’s sensible to add millions of pounds to the mountain of debt that is causing economic turmoil.

Bastards. If we have to have a monarch at least give us a fucking day off work for it. Pissing Charles has had plenty of bloody days off - over seventy years ' worth so far. Twats.

Why would it be adding to any debt?

It feels like they’ve deliberately chosen the Saturday after the May Day bank holiday. to get out of giving another bank holiday.

Of course they have.

They will maybe just move one of the May BHs. Right now the country can’t afford another flipping BH.

Gosh what a miserable country we’ve become, people talking against their own interests and rejecting a bank holiday!

But a bank holiday will just have passed its the weekend after a bank holiday no one is being "miserable "

Well for a start the public sector employs thousands of people, all of whom are then gaining an additional day’s holiday or time off in lieu, which has a massive financial cost.

  1. It's on a Saturday, so many more people will be able to watch than on a normal weekday
  2. A Bank Holiday on the following Monday would be pointless, as the Coronation will already be over
  3. There are already 2 Bank Holidays in May
  4. Bank Holidays cost employers and the economy a huge amount of money
5)We have already had 2 extra Bank Holidays this year (for the Jubilee & the Queen's funeral - both justified, in my view), so yet another one so soon is probably seen as too damaging

I am very pro Monarchy, and I am looking forward to watching the Coronation, but a Bank Holiday is not needed.

This. There's 2 bank holidays already around the time. Another one isn't necessary.

Agree.

Actually, after The Times printed a story about how Charles wanted the coronation to be shorter and more pared back than the last one, I wrote to them suggesting it should be held on one of the existing Bank Holidays rather than cost the economy millions by creating a new one. They didn't print my letter. But anyway clearly the organisers are thinking along the same lines.

Not necessarily. No evidence to prove that. I work for the NHS and productivity doesn’t noticeably drop when we have a BH as most of us work particularly hard around it to meet the same deadlines and keep up with our workload.

I've got no interest in watching it but I'd like a day off work. That last bank holiday was shit because everywhere was closed. Normally they're nice.

Incorrect. “Most” people won’t have it off, and the the vast majority of those won’t get it in lieu either.

How naive you are.

Well all the more reason to have one then

That would only apply to some roles. Others where constant cover is required involves then paying overtime to people to cover the holiday/time off in lieu

If this fella wants a pared back monarchy he could always abdicate. He shouldn't be telling working people to pare back their holidays on his account.
