I'm not surprised it's a Saturday tbh - I think it was right to have one for the Queens funeral but she was of a different generation. Charles has apparently always talked of a different way of doing things and this probably reflects this.
I suspect in the future Monarchs funerals will also be a Saturday and no bank holiday.
Crustyjuggler92 · 12/10/2022 07:58
My small business is only just recovering from Covid - random extra bank holidays really don't help! It's a good compromise, people that want one got one for the funeral, people for whom they are financially disastrous don't have to manage one for the coronation.

Yep, people talking against their own interests as usual
conkercollector · 12/10/2022 07:40
I would like more bank holidays in general. I used to live in another European country and they had a lot more public holidays.
Only if their interests are in line with yours.
People who run small businesses have already aid it wouldn't be in their interests to have one.
It's not in the interest of patients waiting for appointments to have one (although granted there would be more notice this time).
It wouldn't be in my interest to have one. I work part time for the NHS so the bank holiday added to my leave would be pro-rata-ed and I would be given about five hours additional leave. But if the bank holiday was on a Monday, when I usually work an eight hour day, I would have to book that eight hours off. So an extra bank holiday Monday means I get less leave overall.
No thanks.

OP I'm totally with you! First thing I thought when I saw it was Saturday was WHERE IS MY BLOODY BANK HOLIDAY!!!
Yes I know some people don't get them off, some people don't get the benefit etc etc etc. But why would you begrudge people that do? I can't have something so no one must have it? Life is shit at the moment, and actually, a "free" day off work would be brilliant thanks very much.
I think they'll move the May Day to the Monday after to make it a long weekend, then pretend they're doing us a favour, even though we'd have got that day anyway, albeit the week before
DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 12/10/2022 08:01
I was prepared to put up with having Charles as king (even though the whole institution is bizarre and offensive to/in opposition with the idea of all people as equal) when I thought they were going to dole out another bank holiday. Now I say, off with their heads!
@ReeseWitherfork you made me laugh out loud with the raisin comment
PalatineHill · 12/10/2022 08:02
I feel like Liz Truss is joylessly sock puppeting on this thread. Lots of small businesses in hospitality and retail and small holiday businesses- all of which were specifically badly impacted by the pandemic, do very well out of bank holidays.
Of course not everyone gets them, and still fewer people get paid for them, but they could be an economic plus. Plus any of us only usually live to see a Coronation once, FFS.
honeylulu · 12/10/2022 08:05
I think it might have been a bank holiday if we hadn't had the platinum jubilee bank holiday which meant we had two extra ones this year . It would probably seem a bit much to have another extra one in May - that would be three in 12 months!
The economy is fucked. Another day of people downing tools will make it worse. Also, I'm in the legal profession and our targets do not change if we get an extra bank hol - we just have to crush the missed hours into longer days that month. Not fun.
Saturday is a good compromise. King Charles has already said that his coronation will not be on the same scale and relative expense as his mother's. I think that's quite a pragmatic and engaged approach given the financial state of the country. If there was another bank holiday and excessive expense everyone would be criticising him as infinitum for being out of touch.

What an extremely selfish attitude.
Mommabear20 · 12/10/2022 08:09
No! The majority of the country don't benefit from a bank holiday so why should they? Anyone in retail, hospitality, hospitals, emergency services etc all still have to go to work, bank holiday or not! Medical/ dental appointments get cancelled, and after almost 2 years of people being furloughed, I don't think more time off for something that most people don't care about is really necessary! And I saw that as a royalist!

Incorrect. “Most” people won’t have it off, and the the vast majority of those won’t get it in lieu either.
How naive you are.
mummybearcub2022 · 12/10/2022 07:19
Yes, most will have it off and some will get a day off a lieu. Only some people have BH tied into their annual holiday allowance. Better to have it than not?
YellowTreeHouse · 12/10/2022 07:16
You realise not everyone gets bank holidays off, yes?
Er -nurses, doctors, police, ambulance, firefighters, armed forces, care workers, farmers, etc etc. I really hate it when people presume everyone works 9-5 weekends and bank holidays off. Really really stupid. Anyway think of all those poor people who had their surgery cancelled at last minute for the queens funeral. That should have been on a Saturday (I watched it all day anyway - I am not anti royal family)

Nothing stopping you seeing it, its on a saturday.

It's not just about you. It's about people whose operations would have to be cancelled, children in the midst of their exams which would be disrupted, retail workers, emergency services, all who wouldn't get it off. Stop thinking of just yourself.
Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/10/2022 08:12

Exactly. If it's really about the coronation, then people won't be upset it's a Saturday. Allows more people the opportunity to watch it. Although I don't think the people crowing for a BH, are bothered about the coronation.
Whitney168 · 12/10/2022 08:23

There was only one extra holiday this year, the other one was moved.
I'll be surprised if they don't do the same thing for this really - move the early May holiday and add another for the Monday so it's a long weekend as they did for the Jubilee.
(Bring it on, I say - this is a once in a lifetime occasion for many, and I love a bit of good ceremony and celebration, which we do very well in the UK.)

@ZeroFuchsGiven What an extremely selfish attitude.
Yes. It is. I'll take that on the chin.
My job has very little perks. Shit pension, shit sick pay, shit maternity. I worked all through Covid (I only mention this as a PP mentioned furlough). I feel totally burnt out.
One of the few perks is BH off.
Does that make me selfish? Yes.
Do I still want it to be a BH? Yes.

QueSyrahSyrah · 12/10/2022 07:42
Well that makes no sense at all. Why move a regular MayDay Bank Holiday when they could just have the Coronation on Saturday 29th April instead of Saturday 6th May?
Signed; person who has already booked annual leave to incorporate Mayday Bank Holiday.
janj2301 · 12/10/2022 07:37
They are talking of moving the Monday holiday before that weekend to the monday after
I agree another BH is not needed and I am one of the lucky ones who would benefit from it.
They wont have it on the 29th April as I believe that is Kate and Williams wedding anniversary.

A contradictory post, surely? If HCP were all still working, operations etc wouldn’t have been cancelled,
I should think firefighters/police etc. are quite aware that fires and crime don’t stick to 9-5 when they chose those jobs too.
