If your asking whether I would prefer a day off with my family instead of working, then the answer is obviously yes. That doesn’t mean I’m workshy. What an odd thing to say.
ZeroFuchsGiven · 12/10/2022 07:34
We already have an extra bank holiday as Christmas falls on a Sunday. C'mon Op, admit it You are just workshy.
I find it odd you wanting a bank holiday when the country is in the financial state it is in.

Big fan of a bank holiday here! What’s the point in the royal family if we don’t get a day off when a new king is coronated? (Is “coronated” a word?!)

gosh what a miserable sour faced bunch we’ve all become! This thread just proves it
Crowned darling.

Well that sounds better, doesn’t sound like I’m going to roll him around in curry powder and stick raisins up his nose.

The coronation is planned for a Saturday. No-one needs a Bank Holiday the following Monday. If you are working on the Saturday then book a day’s annual leave.
Think people have lost enough school / work / business hours in the last two years without additional Bank Holidays.
And I don’t want them to move the Early May Bank Holiday either.

What’s this obsession with Bank Holidays? Every time something happens in the country people start hopping up and down demanding them. Just get on with daily life ffs instead of all the weird drama!
’weird drama’ where on earth do you get that from? How bizarre 🙄

They are talking of moving the Monday holiday before that weekend to the monday after
Well that makes no sense at all. Why move a regular MayDay Bank Holiday when they could just have the Coronation on Saturday 29th April instead of Saturday 6th May?
Signed; person who has already booked annual leave to incorporate Mayday Bank Holiday.

I had an appointment cancelled and I saw the nurse on Monday that I should have seen then. I was surprised by the nurse that said she wanted to see me but the NHS bosses wouldn’t let them work because they didn’t want to pay them bank holiday rates . So all this time I thought naively that it was the nurses maybe child care reasons etc but nope it was because they didn’t wanna pay them bank holiday rates I thought wow that’s not the spin that the media said is it they blamed the nurses
PugInTheHouse · 12/10/2022 07:25
It costs the NHS an absolute fortune and makes if very difficult to provide care. We had to cancel all community appointments and also many non emergency surgeries. Whilst I understand that it's plenty of notice this time it's still a nightmare due to a higher % of DNAs and also facilitating another annual leave day later in the year. The cost implications are huge. Many businesses are affected in a similar way.
Obviously it's nice to have a day off but it's not good for everyone.
In our trust it certainly wasn't because they didn't want to pay the bank holiday rates, that wasnt true for us. Are you sure the person wasnt just speculating, why would a nurse know what 'NHS bosses' are thinking. It was due to the fact kids were off school so many would have to find childcare which isn't easy on a bank holiday. Loads of people just wouldn't have attended appointments as they would be watching the funeral plus wouldn't have informed the service. If people worked that day they got bank hol enhancements plus another days leave, which is obviously costly and pointless if half the appointments were cancelled. It's crap for those who had waited ages for their appointments and would have attended.

This isn’t really an ‘extra’ bank holiday. We always get 2 bank holidays in December. If the 25th/26th are on the weekend we get the Monday/Tuesday off.

Yes this is so frustrating, we had a holiday booked last year incorporating the original jubilee bank hol date, it then got moved so we had to take DS1 out of school and he was Y11, it was a cruise so coukdnt adjust the times, we wouldn’t have been covered on insurance to cancel either plus it was for a specific family event. Luckily it worked out that we could get off really early and get him there but it may not have worked out that way.
BalmyBalmes · 12/10/2022 07:50
But the coronation's on a Saturday, so a day when lots of people are off anyway, so why would we need another random day off?
You realise a bank holiday costs the nhs a fortune in terms of money and people's health? Routine operations, outpatient clinics, scans and investigations are cancelled. GPs are shut which puts further pressure on A&E. All staff who are rostered to work that day have to be paid at a bank holiday rate.
JaneAustensHeroine · 12/10/2022 07:51
It’s not in children’s interests to have an additional Bank Holiday when they have already lost time in education.
It’s not in patients’ interests to have an additional Bank Holiday when they are awaiting surgery or other appointments.
It’s not in many employers’ interests to have a Bank Holiday if they have to pay enhancements or offer time in lieu.
It’s not in many small businesses’ interests to have an additional Bank Holiday when they were badly affected by the pandemic.

I agree. I live on the other side of the world and some people here are moaning that we won't be getting a holiday. Now I like a holiday as much as the next person, but seriously Also find it a bit baffling that so many say they are against the RF but are more than happy to use them as an excuse for a day off!
