To think WTAF at ‘Bonk for Britain?’

Anyone seen this? It’s apparently based on a policy from (far right) Hungary where the media were saying that too many women were going to university and thus wouldn’t be having kids!

“Do you think British people should cut down on reproducing then to make space for those who want to come and live in the UK?”

What, as in ‘white’ British people?

@Cuppasoupmonster of course it’s bloody mysogyny.

I refer you back to the definition “reflecting or exhibiting ingrained and institutionalized prejudice against women; sexist”

In this case ‘wimmin are for breeding’

It’s not ‘women are for breeding’. It would be if it was ‘every fertile woman has to have 3 children otherwise we will impose a fine’ or similar. This is an incentive not a punishment. For people that want more children but can’t afford it, it would be welcomed. I really fail to see the issue

Or it is acknowledging that children are an added financial pressure to families versus childless couples and women with children have a larger earnings gap compared to men or younger women in the workforce.

I am not a conservative voter; on principle I’m against this as I don’t think tax cuts serve the country but this is not actually a misogynistic policy that is against women.

No, why should we deprive other nations of their hard working bright young people?

FatKyle · 09/10/2022 19:39

Those pesky misogynists that made me want to breed. I obviously don't know my own mind, silly woman that I must be.

Florenz · 09/10/2022 19:41

We don't need more immigration and we don't need more babies. We need to reduce the population, not increase it.

Only if you think all British people are white.

How will we grow the economy?

Who will look after the ageing population?

sourcreampringle · 09/10/2022 19:42

Didn’t the tories bring in the 2 child limit for tax credits? The birth rate has declined since that was brought it, admittedly only effected those under a certain income but plenty of working families effected by that.

The current state of NHS maternity care is enough for me to never want to be pregnant again!

Johnnysgirl · 09/10/2022 19:43

No, but many women are punished via the benefit system for having more than two children
Punished?? Can you explain further, please?

Child benefit cap on two children I would think.

With existing people and the children they have. We can't rely on continually increasing the population because eventually there won't be any more room or resources. It's unsustainable.

Heaven forbid women get an education. They might start having ideas…

But ‘supporting women into having more kids’ with free childcare etc is the same as this isn’t it? Either it’s acceptable to incentivise women having babies or it isn’t. We need more babies, where else will they come from?

Upthebracket22 · 09/10/2022 19:48

@LittleBearPad exactly. See Afghanistan..etc

That doesn't make sense. If this policy is aimed at women who are higher earners, then I would imagine that there would be women who would still want to go to university. And later on have a choice whether to have more children or not.

Upthebracket22 · 09/10/2022 19:50

@Cuppasoupmonster but the point that people are making is that this is where it starts. A seemingly innocent policy which then leads to the papers questioning why women need an education if they are just having kids & need to look after them. See Hungary etc.

The world doesn't actually need more babies. The UK might need more young workers but that is an entirely different thing.

There's another way to do that.

How do we do that, without depriving other countries of their young workforce? Which they need as much as we do?

Good point. With incentives women who really don’t want children will still choose not to have them.. it just makes life easier for those who do or enables women who would love to have kids but feel there too many barriers

Because they would still be in the work place part time with a massive tax incentive.

Exactly. No woman is going to have a baby she doesn’t want for an extra couple of grand a year. All it means is that women who can’t afford to have the family size they want, will be able to afford it (or have a better chance of).

Mumsnet has peaked in terms of projecting ‘misogyny’ into so many things it’s almost synonymous with ‘anything that concerns the female sex even to a small degree’.

Upthebracket22 · 09/10/2022 19:55

@Cuppasoupmonster yea because there’s nothing remotely wrong with the term ‘bonk for Britain’ at all is there 🙄

Ok, would you prefer to call it 'have more children for Britain'. Does this make the policy more palatable for you?
