Anyone seen this? It’s apparently based on a policy from (far right) Hungary where the media were saying that too many women were going to university and thus wouldn’t be having kids!

What about those of us who don't like or want kids, why should we be penalised. Stupid idea.

Upthebracket22 · 09/10/2022 20:34

@Cuppasoupmonster encouraging more kids is not what we need.

🤔 it’s almost like a tax break for a mum with a few kids would help there…

What a terrible suggestion 😄

Yes it is. It's not what you want. But it is what we need.

Incentivising others isn’t the same as penalising you.

Surely Boris has already bonked for Britain?

Why would you be penalised? You could go to work full time if you don't want kids. Earn more money. It's a choice. After all the tax break is to raise children. No one in their right mind would take on the responsibility of children just for a tax break. Would they.

FatKyle · 09/10/2022 20:38

Do those who think it's a bad idea because they don't want kids also feel they are penalised because they don't get child benefit?

Kernowgirlie · 09/10/2022 20:39

@FatKyle probably!

Upthebracket22 · 09/10/2022 20:39

Yea, just as the overpopulated world sits on the edge of climate collapse too 🙄

And the existing population, British women, the ones that want to remain in their country, also want to have children. Why should British women stop having children because other places are over populated and many migrants also want to move here. Surely your no children message should be directed at the rest of the world. Not to people in a country whose birth rate is going down anyway.

You seem to be taking this all very personally. My point was, your argument against over-population ("Who will look after the ageing population?") doesn't make sense and is factually wrong. We don't need to keep reproducing at unsustainable rates because of 'the ageing population'. We just don't. It is dangerous to perpetuate false ideas against much needed de-population.

Taking it personally? Well as a British person who would love more kids, and would welcome a policy that supported that, then personally, that would be amazing.

So as this is a country who has a low birth rate anyway, why aren't you taking your message to those populations who are heavily increasing the world population?

Or are you not interested in those people. Just berating British women who would like bigger families?

I'm sure of course you don't have children.

cakeorwine · 09/10/2022 20:50

Maybe women should be disincentivised from going to university, getting a career and should instead just have children to provide future workers for the country.

Children could be put with the right families if the parents disagreed with this policy and wanted their daughters to get an education and to live a life without children.

Are you deliberately misunderstanding me? I'm not talking about de-population in regards to the whole world.
I'm saying the UK cannot continue our unsustainable over-population because we are a very small island nation and over-populated as it is. Unsustainble over-population can only go on for so long until resource depletion and collapse of society. THAT is why your argument in regards to continuing to increase the UKs population because 'who will look after the elderly?' is dangerous and incorrect.

Because if everyone had that attitude we’d have died out by now. It’s your right to feel that way but it’s not really something society benefits by encouraging

The UK is over populated because of immigration. You think British people should stop reproducing because there's plenty of people here anyway from other places. And that those people have reproduced enough to support both their older people and their older people here too when it gets to that stage.

So the logical conclusion would be, as you are so concerned about this small country and the lack of resources, you are also against mass immigration to this country. Is that correct?

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 09/10/2022 21:15

The liklihood of a mother of 4 working enough to pay tax would be fairly low anyway so its making a bigger thing of it than needs to be made.

It's ultimately a choice, sure.

I'm not saying all British people should stop reproducing. Just that unsustainable over-population can't realistically continue.

Of course I'm against mass immigration. Always have been.

Eunoia · 09/10/2022 21:21

Mass, uncapped and unsustainable immigration that is ^

WildFlowerBees · 09/10/2022 21:43

There are many who shouldn't be encouraged to have more kids. Don't we have enough people on our little island already?!

FrangipaniBlue · 09/10/2022 21:56

Yet another tax cut that will only benefit the rich!

Let's face it, it's aimed at working mothers who will continue to work post childbirth (because if they became SAHMs then they wouldn't be paying tax anyway!). Only those on high incomes and who can afford nannies will actually benefit.

For anyone on lower income the cost of childcare for the "extra" children would far outweigh the tax saving!
